It's *still* a great day for hockey!! ~ The 2009-2010 NHL Thread

Training Camps officially opened today, so the new season has officially begun!!

And lo and behold...The Dany "Get me the Hell Outta Here!!" Heatley Era w/the Sens is finally over.

CBC Sports ~ Heatley shipped to Sharks

I say big time win to the Sens for this trade. It'll be nice to see what Cheechoo can do w/the Sens, as well as it just being nice to see him playing again on a regular basis. He's from Moose Factory, so is a Northern Ontario boy and my Dad and I have always tried to keep an eye on his NHL career. That will be much easier to do now that he's in Ottawa.

    In other NHL news...

CBC Sports ~ Flames give Fleury a chance

I hope he makes it and I don't mean on the ice w/the Flames or any other NHL team either. Theo's really gotten more than his fair share of demons to fight and...I've always liked him, so will be pulling for him. As I always have.

And in the seemingly never ending saga of the Coyotes...

CBC Sports ~ Coyotes creditors back NHL

    and...

CBC Sports ~ Gretzky absent as Coyotes camp opens

Let the new Season and not only the Pittsburgh Penguins defence of their Stanley Cup Championship begin, but also the Road to Vancouver too!!

If one of our Mods could close down the old thread please? Thanks!!

I think the Sens got the best deal they could considering they had few options with Heatley's demand to be traded. Glad they got it done. Heatley would have been a big distraction all season long in Ottawa. Sharks are even more talented now, but not convinced that will be enough for playoff success this year.

Anyone going to the NHL opening season games in Europe?

And I heard today that a Capital can't start the season because of a blood clot .

The Phoenix Coyotes' situation... I don't feel like going there today .

Cheechoo was terrible last season, so one can hope that a change of scenery will do him some good.

And in his prime, Theo Fleury was an outstanding player. I'll never forget the night he got a hat trick all on short handed goals! But I've got to believe that this is just a nice gesture by the Flames towards an old hero. I'd be amazed if he could contribute.

Just in case you hadn't heard - Bret Hedican to announce retirement today

Having won a Stanley Cup and played in more than 1,000 NHL games, Bret Hedican will have few regrets when he officially announces his retirement today. That his last game wasn't for the Carolina Hurricanes is one of them.

"The one thing I really am sad about is that I didn't retire a Hurricane," Hedican said Tuesday from his home in California. "I really wanted to. I wish it was possible to sign a one-day contract.

"I'd pay [general manager] Jimmy [Rutherford] to let me sign for a dollar and put the jersey on again."
I'll donate to that cause, Bret! Looks like my Hedican jersey gets the call for the preseason game on Friday...

Thanks for letting us know Nancy. A class act all around, Bret will be missed.

Got to watch the Leafs lose to the Bruins earlier tonight, but it was a fun game. Some amazing plays, one heck of a goal scored by one of the Leafs youngins and five fights. A little bit of everything, except a Leafs win, but they sure tried to win it.

Which is refreshing. Yes, I know it's only preseason, but...For the first time in a very long time, I have actual hope of a Leafs team that could actually do something this season.

    At least I hope so.

Last night bf warned me that if I come over on game nights expect a lot of yelling at the TV and don't expect to be changing the channel. I told him that my dad is a diehard Monteal fan (is there any other type?).. I'm used to it and he was like "oh.. yeah I guess he's had a lot to yell about the past few years"

Well, after God knows how much speculation, Phil Kessel is officially a Toronto Maple Leaf, in exchange for Toronto's first and second round picks in 2010 and their first round pick in 2011. A hefty price tag to be sure, but I think its worth it for a 21 year old coming off a 36 goal season.

Or maybe as a Leaf fan I'm just used to them giving up those kind of assests for over-the-hill former stars who are shadows of their former selves. I'm just not used to this aquiring young talent thing.

I said the same thing last night on another board Ashley. People were going same ol same ol, but it's not. It's one thing to trade our first round picks for older/over the hill players, but this is w/out a doubt not that!!

At least I hope not. At least when Brian Burke said he would be making an attempt to make the Leafs better, it wasn't the same lip service we've put up w/the last few years. He really *is* trying.

The 'Nucks are 4-0 in pre-season.. which means nothing except starting the season with confidence and a happy bf

If you have to choose between the Canucks winning the Cup in 2010 or Team Canada winning Olys in Vancouver, which will you choose? You can't have both!

    Well that's just nasty!

The Canucks winning the Stanley Cup.

Now my reasoning is that if the Canucks come close and lose, the chances of them coming that close again in the next 4 years are pretty slim. I mean come on.. the last time they were THAT close was like 16 years ago. The chances of Team Canada winning the Gold at the next Olympics are much better. So I choose the Nucks for the Cup. Sorry Canada!

Bret Hedican reported that he was hired by Comcast Sportsnet to do Sharks pre and post game show.

Whoa, a lot has happened in the past few days.

That DirecTV vs. Versus ugliness is not going away anytime soon, it seems.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...urn=nhl,192523

Theo Fleury didn't make it past the preseason:

This is what happens when the G20 summit takes place in the "City of Champions" ( and the Pirates )

Oh, God...I can't even try to look at this video of Paul Kariya's younger brother getting seriously injured while playing in Russia .

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...urn=nhl,191483

And Gretzky is no longer the coach of the Coyotes (they are still in Phoenix, right? )

You know something? If I was Stevie Y, I'd be giving Theo a call to see if he's interested in working for Team Canada. Theo worked so hard to get back in shape and give it a legitmate go at the comeback and he's also an Olympic Gold Medalist from 2002. Not only does he know what goes into making that team, but also what goes into winning that Gold Medal.

All the Flames asked about Theo all had great things to say, but also that if anyone had a bad day, Theo was right there helping them turn it around. Having someone like that on the Olympic Staff could be a very big thing.

JMO of course, but I think it would be a good thing if that did happen.

Hockey tonight! We're doing my birthday dinner.. doing fondue. We're moving the dining room table into the livingroom so we can watch the Vancouver and Montreal games haha. Is that sad? I'm thinking yes
