Thank you, Sylvia, for the links. I just watched all of them and I was impressed. A lot of creativity here.

My three favorites were Mark, Garrett, and Sean. I thought these three truly captured the essence of their "word" in their choreography. Robert is up there, too. Not sure who to vote for!

Thanks for posting FallsonPatch and Sylvia!

I really enjoyed Garrett Kling's piece which really captured the essence of his word (also his choice to have it skated by the young Jason Brown also captured the essence of his word). Garrett's work is interesting ... I've seen other work he has skated to and posted.

I also enjoyed Katherine Hill's skating and choreo -- which definitely expressed her word in an odd kind of way. Robert's piece was funny and sooo captured his word.

Loved Mark's skate and choreo too! And I also thought Bebe did a fine job with interesting music. And Sean -- so fun to watch. :)

Who were the winners of YAS-1 and YAS-2 -- apparently there are winners in several categories? I think this series is a wonderful way to continuing giving tribute to Brian Wright and honoring his contributions to skating. Thanks to Audrey Weisiger!

Thanks, Sylvia, for posting the direct links to Youtube. The transmission seems better using the direct links.

To aftershocks, Tommy Steenberg won the Champions Division in the 1st year, and Adam Blake won it in the second year. In the Grassroots Division, Victoria Beebout won in the 1st Year, and Amanda Hoffmann won it the second year. There is no Grassroots Division this time.

You can see all the past postings on Youtube using the following:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/G2CYAS/featured

Some of the choreographers in the first and second years had some amazing skaters like Jason Brown: Jeremy Abbott, Peter Liebers, Shawn Sawyer, Rory Flack-Burghart to name a few.

Great! Thanks for posting, Sylvia. It was interesting also listening to Bebe's midweek update where she introduced her cute dog, and also talked about what she's been doing in her life the past few years.

Love, love, love Bebe's surprise skater for her #2 Challenge.

Looks like all the competitors have made inspiring choices of choreographers to honor. Very cool that Mirielle honors Mark Ballas' choreo and also uses as her music choice, a song by Mark!

Nice that these young choreographers are being used... and I liked Garrett Kling's choreography for Jason Brown so much in the first challenge that I'd like to see more of that in a competitive program for him.

^^ Yes, I think Garrett is very talented, and I like his Springtime choreo for Jason. Would be interesting to see it expanded perhaps for a sp, and then see Jason work with Rohene again for a fp. :swoon:

Wouldn't it be a kick if the "secret" skater for Bebe also had Bebe expand on that choreo for one of her programs this season? Ha ha, where are all the "secret" skaters' fans. You miss a lot if you don't check out FSU during the offseason.

I thought Mark was spectacular and creative this week. Garrett's program was also emotional to watch. Bebe's surprise skater skated the program beautifully.

Anyone else surprised several skaters were unfamiliar with off ice choreographers?

My skater and I watched Mark program several times already. I love how much he integrated the ice in his program. Most skaters make you forget they are on ice, this was just really interesting seeing him on all levels - stretching away, getting so low. Very brilliant.

I wish Garrett's was faster skating. It felt so sluggish at times. Not that the movements of the upper body needed to be faster - just the skaters speed crossing the ice. I would have liked more after seeing his word challenge.

Robert did a stronger program this challenge.

I hated Katherine's program when she just had the skates showing. She totally lost connection with me when all I saw was feet. What was her upper body doing? What was her facial expression?

I'm not all that surprised, as many elite skaters have such busy lives that they hardly keep up with the programs of current/recent/past figure skating choreographers... much less time or interest to keep up with what's going on in the rest of the choreography world.

However, I think it would be a huge asset to all involved in the sport to keep tabs on, and draw inspiration from, the rest of the dance world. :)

I wasn't so much surprised but disappointed that skaters interested in doing choreography would be unfamiliar with off-ice choreographers. I agree that it would be an asset as well as really interesting to know just how knowledegable the on-ice choreographers are with various genres of off-ice choreographers.;)

I think all three of us are on the same plane of thought, for our hopes. :swoon:

The sport certainly doesn't need choreographers who only draw inspiration from Lori Nichols, Sarah K, Sandra B., D. Wilson, N. Morozov, S/Z, Pasquale C., Shay-Lynne, and others for the next decade...

The sport instead has plenty of room to grow and evolve if our younger choreographers (and current big names) pull their influence from outside the sport. :) I think this is why I have been encouraged to see the elite dance teams enlisting ballroom dance experts for their respective programs lately -- really breathing in some fresh takes/moves!

I think there were some interesting signs of these young choreographers experimenting and trying to "skate outside the box"/norm from nearly every choreographer in this competition thus far -- whether it was challenge 1 or challenge 2. I had time to catch up on both rounds this weekend, and I eagerly look forward to challenges 3-5.

I didn't understand why she did that, either - the program got off to such a good start, and then to have only the skates and shins in the frame for so long (almost 40 seconds!) just killed my interest. I'd be interested to know why she chose to shoot it like that, as I'm sure there was some rationale for it.

Bebe's cracks me up. It's like a Stars on Ice finale. Which is my way of saying it is cheesy as hell, but hey, someone choreographs those...

Amy Nunn's reminded me of ISI Rhythmic Ball events- so to that extent I didn't really count it as being inspired by another sport (since that is skating...) but of course, rhythmic skating is inspired by rhythmic gymnastics. Her bloopers were fun. The skating was very nice. This routine may be my favorite, but only because it isn't as wacky as some of the others. But it is kind of wacky to do an artistic routine based on non-artistic things the other skaters did.

    I didn't really "get" Garret's vision...

I really liked Katherine's. I liked the tension in the beginning, and then the energy of the game.

Marks's was so much fun. Probably my favorite of the one I watched except the one that I kind of decided was "too easy" to translate to ice. Neat movement, and a really neat concept.

Haven't gotten a chance to watch the rest.

Finally catching up on challenge 3, 4, and those from 5 that are posted.

I'm surprised more fans aren't following this in the forum, especially given it's the off season and there's little skating to watch now. I applaud these skaters for entering, and the YAS/Grassroots group for making this whole thing possible to begin with. I'm genuinely enjoying watching these challenges and the judges comments!
