Shibutani's should be happy. Who else?
So far, Shibutani's are the only team I've managed to picture skating the YP.
I could see W/P, Gilles/Poirier, Aldridge/Eaton, Samuelson/Gilles, Cappellini/Lanotte, Combes/Buckland pulling off the perk needed for this. But hey, some of the Chinese teams brought perk to the Latin dances so maybe even the Yankee Polka.
What kind of music will be used? Zydeco Bluegrass? Americana? Polka? Tejano? Irish? Norteno?
I have seen skaters who one would have thought were in great shape absolutely sputter on the quickness of the YP.
REALLY????? Oh man, this will be priceless. I remember some pretty funny YP costumes a few seasons back. It'll be worth it for the costume voids alone.
Just to whet everyone's whistle:
Fraser/Lukanin, who thought they were going to skate a Latin dance?
Estonians who came from the circus
Del/Schoen doing the slutty barmaid/cowboy shtick
Zad/Verbillo, featuring Dayglo ice cream cones on the chest
Hokey country/western from the Kerrs
Oh my. Just THINK of the many ebullient possibilities!!
i would love to see their SD
Oh my god, costume crazy awesome!! I seriously can't wait to see what kind of fashion barriers are going to be broken.
That was AWESOME.
Wheee! I love the YP.
Both D&S teams in 2008 had great Yankee Polkas.
Very impressive. Costumes were pretty good too.
I really miss compulsories.
So do I, along with original dances.
Hilarious. Can't you see the conversations that could have happened around this...
"I think the short dance concept is working!"
"Why, any compulsory dance could be turned into an unique and seamless short dance!"
"Name me a cd that won't work and THAT will be the pattern next season"
"The Yankee Polka"
How the hell are they going to assign levels to this???
Oh yes. Someone overlayed the "Oh Susanna" compulsory music to this clip and it works even better.
I kind of like that O Susanna music -- does it meet the tech requirements?
(Though I hope if any of the guys wear chaps that they don't have the weird fringe Schoen's had.)
Love, love, LOVE the Yankee Polka! (Hate the short dance, though...)
It's one SD that I hope a lot of teams will go with Polkabration! throughout, rather than polky waltzes.
In 2003, it was polka, march, and waltz for the Grand Ball OD; that worked very well, I though.
And I hate the yankee polka...
I hate the SDs as a concept... I miss the CDs! But still... a Yankee Polka SD could prove to be so awful, that it couldp provide us with lots, lots, lots of snarky commentary... which would be more entertaining than the SD itself!
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Garden Kitty, where are you? Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lurrrrrrrrrrrrved these costumes of P/B. It's one of the few costumes I always think back of.
Tobias should be in her perky element, too (from Tobias/Stagiunas team)
That's faantastic! Yankee Polka was my favourite CD.
I miss the music from the CD's. Some of them were really catchy.
I really like the YP CD music. It's so unabashedly perky.
After sitting through all those dreadful Yankee Polkas in Hamilton, still you want more? You are one sick and twisted puppy, Miffy.
Yes, it will be great for the Shibs, but what about Weaver & Poje? That CD was created for SHORT people. Capellini & LaNotte do an incredible YP. W&P, not so much.
I loved that afternoon! It was fantastic.
Definitely it will be interesting. I love this dance.
Question: will they have to do 2 patterns of Yankee Polka in SD?
I like it too, but I still don't care for the SD and preferred the CD and OD format. Having to integrate the set pattern and free skating continues to appear problematic to me in that it diminishes the strength of both. At best the free part ends up seeming like just an extension of the compulsory, it's the exception to the norm IMO for the opposite to occur, which I think would be the objective.
I think I'm finding it worse this year than as it was with the waltz last here and am wondering if it will be difficult to extend or incorporate the YP.
Love the Yankee Polka! Was one of my faves from D/W.
Wheeee! I've been wishing for a YP SD, but I wasn't sure it would happen. I actually expected them to go with the Finnstep next year. I'm really looking forward to next season's SD. I've never been a fan of the latin ODs/CDs/SDs anyway. I hope we get some polkas next year
At least it will be better than listening to all the latin tracks this year. After sitting through the practice for SD in Sheffield, I couldn't face hearing all the music again in the evening and went to watch the men practice instead. The only good thing that came out of it was that very few couples used latin again for the free dances.
I think the Polka could work better than the Rhumba as, like the Golden Waltz last year, it takes up more of the time allowed, and is much harder to just basically skate through. I don't think one single couple did the 2 sequences of Rhumba back to back, so you couldn't see who hadn't got the strength of edge and togetherness on the restart to have the same speed on the 2nd run through. It might have been better if they had made everyone use Rhumba music and style of dance all the way through like they did in 1994, when T&D did their memorable Rhumba OD.
I hope Alex Shibutani skates the Yankee Polka in Red Sox gear!
I believe Massachusetts has a state polka too.
I think it will allow teams to be creative and not be criticized for not being "polka" enough. That's why I got tired of the Latin SD, because it was pretty narrow in style choices to be considered "latin".
i'm taking a look at the yankee polka and it seems interesting... hard and interesting.
The Massachusetts state polka
OTOH, the Connecticut state legislature "foiled the polka law" again.
(The Ballroom Polka)
Meanwhile (since this is fun for me), I find that Michigan has a Polka Hall of Fame, just prime for all the young Michigan dancers to explore
How can the Shibutanis fail to pick something called:
Happy Polka Music by Richard's Magic Accordion in Paw Paw, Michigan?
Virtue & Moir might be attracted to this polka
"Romantic Polka by Most Famous Superhero Gabriela Gzregorcz"
And Davis and White by
Bingoman Saves Polka Night (Polka From Hell)
or Highway to Hell Polka
Seriously, there are some very odd polkas out there.
I was listening to a polka version of Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" the other day that was kinda awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcoekyMCWzg
Yes, it's one of the pieces that the ISU uses for the Yankee Polka.
