Great atmosphere inside the Agganis Arena on the Boston University campus!

Miami University (Team USA 2) is up, skating to Danse Macabre.

That score seems little low for Miami University. But I really don't know if it is or not!!

Team USA 2 did fairly well but I assume the best teams have still yet to skate.
Team Japan looked...young (esp with that Rock around the clock number), but promising.

I wish Icenetwork had more basic information for people like me who know very little about the sport.

Are the teams required to field 16 skaters?

    Will there be lifts tomorrow?

The team members who don't skate- will they skate in the free skate? I can't imagine how 19 skaters can train for a 16 person program.

Kelly the commentator sure didn't like team Finland 2's music. I didn't think it was that bad.

Finland 2 - music from Dream Girl. They did well. Tonia said they were more sophisticated than the music choice, and this was a safe choice, and the coach was still trying to balance the technical IJS stuff and style (or something like that).

I also feel a little unimpressed for this former world champ team.

ETA: 68.48 wow! Last year the top short program mark was only 65

I thought the German team was good and had good formations but the commentary seemed to indicate the opposite (turnover, edge quality issues, etc). Shows how much I know. :)

USFigure Skating has info here: http://www.usfigureskating.org/content/SYS SP Elements 2012-2013 POSTISU.pdf

Senior SP requirements this season are:
-one block element (the block must pivot at least once)
-one circle element (it must travel, and the circle must change directions at some point)
-one intersection element (a "whip" intersection is required)
-one MITF element (spirals, ina bauers, spread eagles)
-one no hold block configuration (has to meet step sequence features)
Leveling is similar to other skating disciplines--more complicated maneuvers get higher levels, and better executed elements garner higher GOE. I believe the fall penalty is 1pt (per skater), and of course that'll affect your GOE & levels if it's on an element.

I *think* the official team size is 16, and you can have up to 4(?) alternates. Often the alternates will skate the warmup and then leave the ice.

Synchro is incredibly hard! Changing your speed has gotta be one of the toughest things about it--at some points you have to really HAUL A** and other times you have to almost stand in place. And trying to match precisely the speed, depth of edge, style, extension, etc, of your fellow skaters is a real challenge. But obviously it doesn't get the glory of the other skating disciplines :)

And yes, lifts are required in the long program. http://www.usfigureskating.org/content/SYS FS Elements 2012-2013 POSTISU.pdf

I wonder how important staying in formation is while doing elements. I wonder if teams get more marks doing hard stuff with so so formation, or easier stuff with better formations. (That's kinda like asking how important synchronization is in pairs elements. :) )
    Canada: 72.84

I think the short winner can possibly get like 75 or 80 :D

The Icenetwork female commentator is Kelley Ristau, an ISU Technical Specialist.
