Who will make the team?
It's a shame Anna Li did not continue. I think she would get sent for bars since it's an individual year and then McKayla would probably do vault, beam, and floor.
Most likely scenario is Ross and Biles for AA with Maroney on floor/vault and someone else for bars/beam. I don't know who will get the bars/beam spot. That's a toss up and I don't know if we have any legitimate medal contenders on those events besides Ross, anyway.
Not really sure, the way the team is set up the 4th spot is almost a waste. Had Ross been the bars/beam specialist someone like Price could do AA but Ross is so strong now she will do AA almost for sure. Maybe they will send Price to do bars as a consolation gift for not getting to go to the Games, although she isnt really a contender.
I guess, at this point, whoever gets the 4th spot will probably get it for experience. Brenna Dowell is probably the strongest on bars, but her beam isn't that great. Ernst has a higher beam DV (if she doesn't get downgraded), but her bars are just okay. I don't see her doing it now, but Martha could also totally do what she did in 2002 and make some out of left field choices and send newbies for experience. At the time, her choices seemed far fetched...well, to me anyway, but they ended up yielding a gold on both bars and beam and a bronze on floor.
Once again, it's really too bad Ohashi isn't healthy to do at the very least, Bars and Beam.
I really wonder about the bars situation for 2014 Worlds.
What is Rebecca Bross up to these days?
Ohashi would have perfect for the bars-beam girl rule even though it would have taken some disaesters for her to medal on bars.
Yeah, I don't necessarily think Ohashi would medal on bars, but I think bar finals might have been a possibility. Beam, if she hit, however, I think could have been a medal opportunity.
I'd say Price for that 4th spot but no one knows what she looks like at the moment coming off injury. Nationals should hopefully answer questions. I want Ross, Maroney for sure. I'm ok with Biles although I'm not a fan and anyone else so long as it's NOT Mykayla Skinner Seriously Marta would have to break a LOT of girls for her to make the team.
I would love for Skinner to get the double twisting double layout named for her, but there's no real justification for her getting named to the team. I'm assuming if Victoria Moors can get the skill down that the honor will go to her.
I would prefer someone other than Moors or Skinner getting the double-double layout named after them. Both are too tucked and way out of bounds for my liking.
Maroney and Ross are certainties. Ross for AA, Maroney for Vault and perhaps floor. I don't see her getting the other AA spot. Despite a horrid time of things I still favour Biles getting a spot and she'd be perfect for AA. Therefore, someone like Price would be a waste since they can't have four people do Vault in qualifying. It would have to be a bars and beam specialist. Something the US doesn't actually have at the moment.
Crap I totally voted wrong. I picked the wrong McKayla/Mykayla
Anyway as much as I'd love to see Maroney doing the AA, it seems more likely that she will only do vault and floor. If Biles and Ross do AA, I'd actually have Price do bars only because her beam is quite poor, and if she hits bars including the Church immediate shoot to handstand I could see her in bars finals, combined with the other connections she was working in the training video.
Who has a better chance at floor finals or a floor medal between Maroney and Price? Price's floor is very strong. Frankly I doubt either have a good shot to medal on floor though, and Biles is probably the only one that does. They could even have Price do bars and floor, and Maroney vault and beam.
Hmm Price could do a double-double layout.
I picked Biles, Ross, Maroney, and then Milliet as a wildcard.
Now that Price is not doing floor I think she is less likely to make it. She obviously isnt going to make it for vault, unless Ross performs so poorly they somehow decide to use Maroney and Biles as the two AAers, and she now cant make it for floor. So she would have to be taken for bars alone and I am not sure whether she is worth taking for bars alone, although she could make finals on bars I guess.
It is really hard to say who is the 4th person now, could be a complete surprise.
Kocian, if she's not too injured from her floor mishap. She's not likely to make finals on bars or beam but she's really the best pick now, IMO.
We know she's in Hartford watching the Championships. She was on the Kellogg's Tour after the Olympics and did some other appearances, but that was the last I heard.
She's also coaching some wee ones at the WOGA Dallas location last I checked.
After night one, I'm really hoping that the 4th member ends up being Madison Kocian, she really impressed me on bars. I think she compliments the team of Ross, Biles, and Maroney the best and should have a fairly good shot at making the bars final and even placing well there. Unfortunately, I think Marta will send Brenna Dowell for that UB routine she will probably fall at least once on. I hope her injury isn't too serious to hinder her on UB in the next month, I'd imagine Marta will give her an invite to camp considering she was leading the competition leading into floor..
But yeah I really like Kocian, she has nice finesse and basics. Could also develop into a very good UB/BB specialist this quad so I'd rather see her get it based on how well she compliments Maroney.
You know three years ago Kocian was right up there with Ohashi, then she dropped out of elite competition. It's great to see her back. She's lovely and I think she has potential on bars.
Dowell's bars are a mess. The way she works out of the Tweddle is just not good and if she gets picked to go to worlds just for that routine I think I will cry.
USA Gymnastics just posted the following message about World Team Selection Camp on their Facebook Page:
So Kocian is out for worlds She was the only person that worked for the bars/beam spot. So, I feel like Dowell will get the spot even though her beam isn't great. Milliet has a good beam when she hits, but isn't good at all at Bars. At this point, I almost wish there was a way to go ahead and send Keys and Hernandez to let them get some experience.
That's a real shame about Kocian, especially since bars and beam would be the least likely to impact the ankle. But it sounds like she has quite a history of injuries so staying healthy has to be her priority.
It seems like the last spot is almost a throwaway, as I don't see anyone in the selection group with a high probability of qualifying for finals on either bars or beam, although I certainly could be proven wrong. The alternatives would then be to either give it to an up and comer with future potential or as a reward for experience/consistency. I don't really see anyone that fits the former who is age-eligible (a healthy Ohashi would probably have been the closest), for the latter it would probably be Price or Dowell.
Then Price should go. She could make bars finals, even though her beam is rather weak, and she didn't even do beam here. Ernst could go but she's unlikely to make event finals on either event.
I agree about Price. I actually wasn't thinking about her in the scheme of things. I wonder if McKayla is still working on Beam and they might have her do 3 events and then Price could do bars like Jana Bieger in 2005.
^ I agree that's the best option for sure (in fairness of sending 4 gymnasts and not just 3 for AA like I would do at this point). Cut to Bill Strauss crying...
LOL! it makes me so happy when he cries
