Its almost the end of 2011. Hence, a simple poll to find who was the best skater(s) of the calendar year 2011.

As always, the nominations will be controversial so sorry if I miss out anybody's fav

Please note that I have omitted Worlds silver medallist Kim Yu Na as she only competed once during the season. Also omitted Elizaveta Tuktamysheva as she competed mostly at a junior level during the year and will therefore go into the best junior poll.

I would have voted for Miki if she didn't took a season's off after Worlds
but I have to give this to Carolina Kostner, her improvements and her best seasons' yet.

Weaver/Poje should be an option. Their improvement was tremendous.

Aliona/Robin for being such a breath of fresh air in pair's skating and challenging themselves artistically. Their LP this season is phenomenal!

Carolina for having finished on the podium 11 times in a row (who would have thought) and for setting herself apart from the rest of the field with her skating, her programs and her costumes :kickass:

Patrick Chan for his Canadian & World Championships LP performances. I am not so impressed by him this season but wow, those two performances were so incredibly difficult and well executed, you gotta give it to him, that was amazing.

Gold (1): Patrick Chan - For his insane, record breaking skates. For pushing himself artistically with Aranjuez. For his Nationals LP, a skate I'll revisit time and time again.

Gold (2): Savcehnko/Szokowy - For their greatest LP (skate) ever at Worlds 2011. For an audacious, ambitious LP the following season. For rebooting their careers. For being one half a thrilling rivalry.

Bronze: Virtue/Moir - For pushing themselves technically, artistically and otherwise with their Latin Trio and Funny Face. For reminding audiences that they're still a force to be reckoned with. For being one of the all time greats.

Savchenko and Szolkowy for both their 2010-2011 programs and their 2011-2012 programs

LOL!!! Yeah I sorta agree, she will always be the best skater whatever the year, along with Yuna Kim.

Nevertheless I voted for Dai! Because his skating this year is just swoon worthy! Like matured finewine. And I'd pick Hanyu second, like spring water from mount Fuji :p

And I'd reserve an extra spot for Patrick for best skater when he is on his feet for more than 1 minute.

Chan gets my vote. Savchenko/Szolkowy and Takahashi are my second and third choices, respectively.

In my opinion the best in 2011 is Weaver/Poje. I fell in love with them!

In terms of domiance, it is a no brainer - Davis/White. They are the only team that has been undefeated in 2011 among the list of skaters. They are also the first US ice dance team ever to win gold medals at worlds.

I voted for Javier Fernandez, but Takahashi would have been my second vote.

If I could have voted by discipline I'd have gone:

    Men: Fernandez
Ladies: Kostner (and considering how much I've disliked her in the past, this is saying something)
    Pairs: S/S
    Dance: D/W

Patrick Chan was undefeated in 2011 as well. D/W may be the only undefeated team of the year, but they aren't the only undefeated skaters of the year.

I voted D/W for their almost absolute perfection. Others on my list would be S/S, Dai, Jeremy and Mao. I also love seeing Javier's improvement under Orser, and Jason B's and Joshua F's rising star performances. Kudos to Nan Song and Akiko Suzuki for their accomplishments and to Hanyu for his prodigious talent.

Aside from his amazing skates at Canadian Nationals and Worlds Chan while "undefeated" b/c he's so "unbeatable" has put out some fairly sloppy performances this year. In that respect, "the team" of D/W have overall performed far and away much better than Chan -- no comparison.

I voted D/W because of the absolute pure joy I felt watching their long program this season. It never fails to lift me up. Their exhuberance and enthusiasm for this program just blows me away. I know they're technically good, but that's not what gets to me. This program transcends sport and technique, for me anyway. Thanks, Meryl and Charlie.
