I’m curious about speed of ladies skaters because I’ve heard so many opinions that I’m a bit confused. Can you guys (at least those of you who watched some competitions live ;) ) tell me more about them? I mean mostly speed of: Kim, Asada, Kostner, Ando, Leonova, Cohen and Biryukova, but also other skaters. I will be reeeeeally grateful if you share with me your impressions :)

When I watch competitions on TV I always have an impression that Kostner is the fastest one, then Nagasu, Kim, Cohen and Leonova. This season I also noticed that Biryukova has an amazing speed. I don’t know what to think about Asada because surely she isn’t numbered among the fastest skaters, but she also doesn’t seem as sloooooow as many people say. But maybe she is? It's hard to judge :(

First time i ever saw Kostner was at the 2006 Olympics and i thought she was going too fast and i thought she was going to lose it because she looked almost out of control. Kim always looks like she has control which makes her jumps even more impressive but Kostner probably needed to dial it down a bit though she's more under control now as she got older.

Asada is not actually slow, but other top ladies (Kim, Kostner, etc.) are significally faster.

In seniors Kim and Kostner have the best speed. In juniors Sotnikova, Tuktamysheva and Baga

I have different feeling: When Kostner was younger she was able to land her jumps with great speed but after that her body has changed and that's why now she has problems with jumps. She's taller and her hips are bigger, I don't think her problems are about speed.

    hello? remember the olympics?

    Of course YUNA KIM!!!!

she once missed combination jumps bcuz she wasn't able to control the speed going in!!(07-08 season, maybe?)

Her speed during step sequences always amaze me. So fluid and fast!!

Cohen? I never thought Sasha skated paticularly fast. If you say who has the best speed, then it's Kostner.

Of the ones I've seen live Laura Lepistö stood out as one whose speed looks a lot faster than on TV. During the warmup it looked like she was skating circles around the others :D She isn't as fast as Kostner but still.

The only one I noticed as being super-fast was Carolina Kostner. I think Ando is sort of slow. Rochette struck me as slow on television but live she looked faster.

If I had to rank "speedyness" in the top ladies, my list would look something like this:

    Kostner
    Kim
    Nagasu (on a good day)
Rochette (known in the early 2000's as Rocket Rochette)
    Asada (on a good day)
    Lepisto
    Phaneuf

Not sure how Cohen or Ando can be considered fast. I found both their weaknesses to be their speed.

Kostner, Kim, Nagasu, Lepisto come to mind.
I also noticed Biryukova's speed was quite good.

Yeah, live Cohen is not fast. Not noticeably slow, but average speed.

I haven't seen her live, but Lepisto always looks like she's blazing past the boards with no visible effort.

I wish I had seen Suguri live when she was in her prime. :(

As far as I've seen live, Arakawa had the best speed (Kostner was the close second on a good day). Shizuka always made the rink look small. Kanako was remarkably fast when I saw her at JGPF 2009. She was smaller than now back then, but she looked bigger and taller and had presence on the ice because of her speed.

Murakami looked like the energizer bunny to me at Skate America -- speedy because her legs were stroking quickly. Kostner, Arakawa, and Suguri had effortless speed, taking just a few strokes to go the length of the ice.

Suguri (she still has some good speed now) and Kostner definitely top the list.

LOL at all the Arakawa, Suguri, and Murakamis.
To some, Japanese skaters can't do anything wrong and best at everything.
