As per the ISU, in International Junior Competitions and ISU Junior Championships a Junior is a Skater who has met the following requirements before July 1st preceding these Events:
    i) has reached at least the age of thirteen (13);
ii) has not reached the age of nineteen (19) for Ladies and Men in singles competition; and
iii) has not reached the age of nineteen (19) for Ladies and the age of twenty-one (21) for Men in Pair Skating and Ice Dance competition.

As of July 1, 2010, Paul will be 18 and Islam will be 20, so they should still be eligible as juniors for next season.

I sure hope not. The junior competitive circuit is the main way to get developmental international experience and ranking points to lay the groundwork for getting Grand Prixs and achieving senior success.

Already I have concerns for couples who are late-bloomers or who switch partners and have to re-establish themselves. If you don't find your ideal partner till you're in your early twenties, how do you break into the mix? It's hard to get ranking points at Senior B's. And if you drop the age limits for juniors, it just worsens the problem.

I agree, i dont know why they need to do this at all.
Maybe because at this OG some skaters, who could skate at juniors (like Mao Asada, Kim Yu-Na) took medlas at OG?

Yes, but this goes to her basic skating skills - it's hard to polish those if you don't prioritize them early - look at Tanith.

I agree, but Tanith and Meryl won silver at OG.
I hope Mady will work on her basic in this summer. I hope.

Why Platov say, not all skaters born talented like V and M? Many skaters born talented too, like Khokhlova and Novitsky, they should medal. Tessa is little girl, (teenager girl) .Jana is big girl, grown up, she is a lady know how to express feeling.. maybe if Jana and Sergei skate for USA or canada they will medal.

Oddly enough (I guess), I'm not. It's too easy and too obvious. I'm hoping they do something really fun and something that shows off their ability to dance. I'm not sure how much time they have to throw something together for SOI though -- they must be exhausted right now and I can only imagine how tired they'll be after Worlds.

In the future, I'm hoping they stray away from the obviously romantic and use the chemistry they have in other ways. Thinking back to some US SYTYCD routines, I'd love to see something like Hok and Jaime's "Hummingbird and Flower" (eroticism but not human) or perhaps Neil and Sabra's "Sweet Dreams are Made of This" (portraying enemies).

Could you post links to the videos of the dances you are talking about?
I think they will have new exibition for SOI (at least 1 new and FD or OD).
And i think they will not bothering fans of other team with there romatice FDs, i have feeling they will retried if they will win the WCh.

I will try to post the links when I get home (or maybe someone else who knows the dances I'm referring to can post the links sooner?).

I hope they don't retire if they win the WCh. And my desire to see a non-romantic FD comes as a fan of V&M. ;) Some of us can be fans of multiple teams at the same time -- shocking! I know.

Those were two of my favorite SYTYCD routines, too:

    The Hummingbird

    Sweet Dreams

I'd love to see them skate to "Never Say Never" by The Fray, which was used on the Canadian SYTYCD last year for one of my favorite routines.

Yes -- and it was awesome. Can't wait to see more.

I hope they win Worlds just so they feel that they have the freedom to do whatever they want. They have so much talent -- they could show some truly interesting ideas in ice dance. I'd love to see lots of different emotions -- rage, depression, sadness, confusion, as well as just plain abstract dancing.

Thanks, T&Bfan! Trying to think of other cool numbers -- remember the Triplets of Belleville number -- cabaret, was it? It was totally off the wall, but so interesting. I wonder if they'd ever try something like that.

Thank you and sap5 for the links a lot! Look really cool. I like The Hummingbird - but i dont think this could be done on ice. But who knows....
I like "Sweet Dreams" by Marlyn Manson, but i dont think judges will love this sounds
I think they showed a lot off modern moves in PF FD and it was a lot off criticism - that this wasnt the dance, this was acrobatics. Skate Canada talk, that they need to do romantic FD at OG againe, Trasy Wilson all time talk how it was risky and that D-W much better in S&D. I think only Kurt support them with PF FD. (and russian specialists from ice dance).
I mean this is really cool ideas, but its look, like most off people didnt like something modern and unusual.
And for me there Mahler was an abstract dance with light and love mood. And i like PF FD a lot too.
But lets go to talk about modern choreo.
I know, you dont know this music, but what do you think about choreo in this numbers (this girl isnt dancer, she is rythmic gymnast)

ITA! I think there's a lot more where Pink Floyd came from and I really hope we get the chance to see it. I keep telling myself they don't have to skate competitively to push the envelope, although I'd rather see what they can do to push themselves under COP. I'm hoping they put together something awesome for CSOI, but I doubt they'll have much time to work on it. Will they have 2 numbers? One fun and one voidy? If we're allowed to make requests. :p

Tessa is hip-hop expert, thats why i hope they will show modern choreo at least at show number.
I think they will have 2 numbers for CSOI. But will it be something new or no. They really didnt have a lot off time for doing something new.

How do you think, when they talk about retreiment - will they skate at leat in shows?

My youtube was acting up last night so I didn't have a chance to view. I will try again tonight.

    Just saw this: http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/03/11/the-best—and-worst/

Well, I guess V&M succeeded in creating that "feeling of love" Marina requested. Oh my.

 I particularly like that 'cos I was a big Moonlighting fan (even once interviewed someone from the show & named a pet after a character). And this reminds me - on the Television Without Pity sports forums, a few posters have been discussing whether it's weird to "'ship" real-life people like they do for TV characters.

But that article ranking JoRo and V/M below the men's hockey team? Oh, Canada.

I thought they will have 9,5 at least (or even 9,7 - i give ten to hockey gold, because its Canada). And Russia-Canada game had more pooints... Tessa adn Scott wuzzrobbed :lol::lol:

Although it's always nice to imagine the possibilities of a good team branching out and doing different things, I decided I'm just fine if all V/M want to do is romantic, sappy stuff. :)

I hate to think of such a young team retiring. I don't know about just doing shows. Is there even much of a market for that anymore?
Also, I've gotten the impression that when Scott and Tessa talk about retirement it's about not skating together anymore at all because of wanting to do other things. If they'll still skate together, why retire?

    I so agree.

But I figure it's like all that tabloid gossip at the supermarket checkout. They're free to publish that kind of junk and I don't have to read it. After accidentally coming upon some of that creepy stuff out there re. V/M (and some others), I've learned which sites to avoid.

Not to get too OT, but I first saw Greg in a show when he was an 11 y.o. singles skater. He had a ton of personality then, and really impressed a pro skater who was the guest star of that show. But from what I've seen of him as a dancer, that personality has been much subdued. As others have said, he could still develop/ bring back that performance level. V/M are so good at so young an age, it's easy to forget that other dancers still grow and improve and peak even later.

Oh, and re: Meryl - I have to put in a good word for her too. ;) (This reminds me so much of how I like both pairs S/P and B/S. I like V/M and D/W too, although favor V/M.)

Thats really interesting question. I cant understand, why they will not skate even in shows if they will retried? Tessa could go to the Universaty and in i think she could have time at leeast for shows.
For me its hard to imaging what Scott will doing if they will not skate even in shows. I have feeling, that he need to skate, because its his job and if he didnt want to go to college, what he could doing now?
I think he want to be a comedian :D

I'm prepared to bet they'll go voidy again next season. I can see why they went back to romance but now that the pressure of winning Olympic Gold is off, they're "free" to explore artistically.

LOL at the Maclean's quote. Is the whole of Canada shipping those two? But yes, their chemistry is so good that their romance is utterly belivable.

My bad on mixing up the age requirements for Juniors (I'm always confused about this); thanks for clearing that up! On another note, I/K are leading J.Worlds by some 8 points and Paul/Islam have moved up to 2nd!! The Shibus dropped to 4th unfortunately, behind M/K. Sending good vibes to all the skaters! (For all we know, we might be looking at some of the Sochi medallists! :D)

Is it possible to petition to have V/M guest star on SYTYCD Canada? (The choreo for the two routines is AMAZING btw). I'd really like to see them dancing on the floor, whatever the theme might be. I'd love to see B/A and D/W on the US SYTYCD too!

Its look, like a lot off people think, that I-K is next V-M and will be champions in Sochi. I wonder - why russians didnt send them to JWCh year ago?
But i more surprized with P-I results at this JWCh. How long they are skating together? They improved so quikly - i will not be surprized with there hig results in future. I think Skate Canada will send them to Shpilband-Zueva scholl if V-M will retierd.
I think coaches didnt have time to work with Shibutanies fro this JWCh. I read Maia had problems on twizzles. But she is so young - they didnt need to go to seniors next season - they could win JWCh in 2011.
And yes - o wish to see Tessa adn Scott in some dance shows or ice shows, like "Battle of the blades".
And its interesting - maybe V-M will be motivated to stay, because someone could be younger OG champions? :)

Paul & Islam have been together about one year. He sat out all of last season waiting to find a partner (he previous partner, Joanna Lenko, had to quit skating because of illness). Paul skated with Jason Cheperdak last season and they did not too badly on the JGP IIRC.

As for P&I going to Zoueva, I'm not so sure about this. They are coached by Mitchell's dad, David Islam and I'm not sure he'll want to part with them. The big question mark for David Islam as a coach is political clout (internationally). If P&I do want to hit the big-time in seniors they'll probably have to switch at some point. But I don't know if they'd do it.

Thank you! Did you saw OD video from oficcial JWCh site? If yes - who was with them. One of the coaches was Tyler Myles, but who was second? It was Michael dad?
I think for good results at seniors they need to be more polished, look more senior and have politick support from coach and fedaration. Will see what they will doing after this good at JWCh ;)

I am seriously starting to show my age. What does this mean, "shipping"? I am seeing it all over the place in the past couple of weeks and I have no idea what it is!!

I just booked tickets to Torino! Our seats for the free dance are absolutely terrible but I am so excited to see the polished version of Mahler. It was definitely a work in progress when I saw it at TEB and the people behind me were yapping through the entire performance so I didn't really appreciate it. I missed the OD there so I'm more excited to see that. :cheer: :cheer2:

pani, no, I did not watch the video yet. I'll try to tonight. If the coach had darker coloured skin and spikey hair, that's him.

I think for seniors P&I will need to be more expressive and project more. They have good technique - they'll just need excellent choreo and more expression.

It's a shortened form of "relationship", i.e. wishing for them to be an item.
