Love Marissa and Simons new program! Great choice for them! Lots of energy, powerful and so nice to see a team go outside the box and do something different! It will just get better as the season progresses!

Let's not forget that Denny/Coughlin scored 67 pts in their SP a week ago, and Scimeca/Knierim scored 65 pts in their SP in June. These three teams all have a good shot at winning Nationals.

According to TanithandBenFan's post in the Kiss and Cry, Castelli/Shnapir aren't doing the free skate in Montreal today. They're scheduled for Cranberry Open next weekend so perhaps they will debut their Skyfall program then.

BTW, it's nice to see that Caitlin Fields has progressed well enough with her new Canadian partner, Sebastian Arcieri, that Skate Canada has assigned them to the JGP in Kosice, Slovakia (her first-ever international).

In addition, lets not forget that four other teams scored over 60 points in their SP at Skate Detroit. Zhang/Bartholomay scored 65, Donlan/Speroff scored 62 points, Leng/Leduc scored 61 points and Kayne/Oshea also scored 61 points. Davis/Brubaker were close at 58 points as well.

Add Denney/Frazier into the mix and it will be a very exciting pairs event at Nationals.

Very impressed by Castelli & Shnapir's SP, as well as the way they skated it. Marcotte does a wonderful job choreographing for them. That 3 sal throw is one of the best in the world and it's too bad they don't have another reliable throw triple to match it. But all their experience together has paid off, they are skating with a new level of composure, it seems. Castelli is really lovely in lifts and has great energy.

I would also say that C/S's SP score would've been a couple point higher had it been at Skate Detroit

Curious. What do you base this on? The L1 on steps "hurt" the score in Montreal, but Suidek is known as a fair and good caller.

I'm assuming that this was an international competition for C/S, in a sense. I don't think they were skating in front of a panel of US judges.

Raise a great point and in my book both D/C and S/K have the beauty and consistency and better programs C/S program is basically the same type of program as last year would have been nice to see them stretch themselves. I think the fight is going to be from 3rd to 7th this year.
For the team competition at Olympics do they take the third team placed at Nationals???

Outside the box???? It is pieces of music cuts like last year and same type of program. Classical love story would have been outside the box they are using what works for them...smart of them I say go for it!!

I wouldn't rule out C/S for an Olympic spot outright. Ice is slippery and they show improvement as a team even over last year, where many thought they improved. On elements, I noted their 3 twist is better. They actually get a decent level on that element now.

I wasn't comparing scores (to be honest I always take summer comp scores with a grain of salt). I was remarking on the program itself. C/S have shown much improvement and their program is difficult and full of interesting choreography. There are lots of teams in contention including C/S. My post was more in response to the idea that has been floating around that C/S will simply lie down at Nationals and other teams will easily grab the title. A lot of posters here seem to think that C/S aren't in contention with other top US pairs.

    ETA:
I don't get the impression that it's "a lot of posters" being negative in this thread about Castelli/Shnapir. I certainly wouldn't count them out! The more competitive and determined U.S. pairs pushing each other the better!

Wonder how Camerlengo feels about having his Free Skate "improved" upon. Yes, there's always an opportunity to work on a program to further develop it and have it best fit the athletes etc. but I would think the courtesy is to stick with the original choreographer. I realize they had to balance the egos (which don't sound very big overall) of various choreographers but still, it is a professional courtesy issue I would think, to put your name on an altered version of someone else's work. Just wondering.

Z/B deserved the TBA spot at SA by virtue of 2013 Nationals, 2013 4CC's and their summer performances at Skate Detroit.

I hope that some of other up and coming US teams get those international B's this Fall - Ice Challenge in Austria, Coupe International de Nice in France. Are there any others? It would be nice to see D/S and L/L get an international assignment. D/S look like they're fighting harder and L/L are developing nicely, and perhaps K/O and D/F could get additional assignments besides the SLC skate and NHK respectively.

BTW, have all the spots for Nebelhorn been announced? I think D/B got one slot. Does the US have any more slots?

I received a few scores from Cranberry Open Friday - Sr Pairs SP 1-3: Castelli/Shnapir 62.38, Donlan/Speroff 59.46, Shaughnessy/Morgan 45.23 (they recently passed their USFS Senior test). Don't have many details except that C/S and D/S reportedly both landed their sbs triples and throw 3S.

It was far from their best outing, but despite a throw 3loop that was popped to a double & aborting the last carry lift that should have covered the entire rink, I thought there was some silver lining. Beginning of the program looked very polished for this stage of the season and Gretchen's 3toe was fully rotated. Her jumps looked good in the 6 min warm-up, actually. C/S were :swoon:-worthy in person. Other than popping their SBS 3toe jumps to doubles, this didn't look like an early season-program. Already very polished and attacking everything. Also, the speed and ice coverage they get on their lifts don't always come across on tv, but it definitely sets them apart when you see them live.
