Great for Angela Wang! She's on a roll! Good to see another skater able to vie for one of the two top spots at Nationals!!!!! (She should have placed much higher at last year's Nationals, IMHO)

The fact that Ashley would only need a 50 point SP on top of what she scored in the FS to have the highest international score really shows that she controls her own destiny. Really hopeful to a bright future for the US ladies.

RE Angela: Her jumps are incredible, right up there with Gracie's as the best in the US. I wish though that they both would spend more time on the second mark, I think Angela possibly needs a complete style makeover if she wants to truly be at the top. I think she has great potential though and a good heart!

Mirai Nagasu just got bronze at Finlandia w/ a 163.09. Came back to score over 110 pts. in the LP which will put her in the 3rd place overall in the above tally

What's interesting (and encouraging) to me is that Mirai has landed her most difficult combo, the 2x-3t cleanly in her 2 most recent competitions this year (Glacier Falls and Finlandia), and she's getting level 4's on all her spin combos. Her overall jumping ability has improved markedly over Glacier Falls. She is also returning to back-loading her program a little more than last year. I wonder if she'll be the dark horse at Nationals this year...

IA. I like that Mirai is building on each competition. Mirai usually isn't an early season skater but her LP at Finlandia is encouraging and definitely something to build on for CoC. I hope this season is like 2009-10 or even better for Mirai. Once she gets comfortable with these programs, I think she will really be able to sell them. She just has to be confident.

Congrats to her for winning the bronze! :cheer:

Mirai looks to be in a good place so far this early in the season. But I hate that so many skaters are switching to mohawk entries to their flip jumps. The three turn entrance is so much more pleasing to watch. I find it interesting her team put in two triple flips into her program. The flip is a more fragile jump for her than the lutz is...

And her hair color is a few shades lighter. ;)

Mirai's LP looks good! Hopefully she will sort out her issues with the flip. Also, she got just a level 2 on both her SP and FS programs...they looked plenty complicated to me though!

I just watched the video: Despite the fall, Mirai looks the best I've seen her in a while! Her jumps had nice spring and were tight in the air. Even if the 3z was a flutz, the rest of the jump was beautiful. I was also happy to see that after she messed up the 2d 3f, she was able to hit the rest of her jumps as planned. She just looks much more 'into it' and focused this year so far.

If she had hit the 3f and made it a combo, her LP mark would've been around 115 pts. I would like to see her as the dark horse and a menace to Ashley and Gracie by Nats

Nagasu appears to be on the right track. I especially found it encouraging that she didn't give up after the fall, which has occurred so many times in the past...

I did get a bit of a cold feeling from it, though. The performance element of it should develop with time.

I am glad Nagasu got the 2axel3toe consistent. Once she gets the jumps down she will need to think about adding more content to the program, choreography wise.

I actually think she would focus a little more on her spins. Both the flying spin and the combo spin look laboured. The layback on the other hand looks superb.

I don’t understand the big hype about Ashley Wagner this year. Her FS last year was dynamic. The choreography in her FS this year seems awkward. Sure, she sells the program but it seems very empty. Also, Ashley’s spins have progressively gotten slower. She still hits pretty positions but I miss the old fast spinning Ashley. Her lutz still seems like it comes off a flat edge. Ashley will always be competitive because of her spirit but I don’t think she’s the favorite. Nationals is going to be a battle between her, Agnes, Gracie and Mirai. (While I love Caroline too, the girl’s Nessun Dorma bored me to bits)

I hope Agnes finds consistency this year. She is great to watch. I didn’t enjoy watching her at first during junior nationals and junior worlds but her packaging has gotten so much better without Zakrajsek. She’s a natural jumper and her spins have gotten so much better. I'd love to see her new SP.

I can only smile in glee to hear that Gracie is working on her skating skills with ice dancing coaches. This is a girl that wants to get better and working hard to it. I don’t think she’ll immediately wow us but she’ll be a bright light in the future if she gets a spins specialist and new choreographer (I don’t like her programs this year :X)

I thought the Finlandia tech panel was extra harsh on Mirai. Both of Mirai’s step sequences were level 2. Even though her SP step sequence needs to be rechoreographed, both sequences should have been level 3’s on par with Lipnitskaia’s. The underrotation on her first 3F is super harsh. To me, it did not look underrotated. The first loop and fall on the second flip might have been underrotated but not the first. I’m puzzled at her team’s decision to add a 3T-3T in the SP. The point value is close to the 3Lz-2T and on a good day, Mirai can try to do the 3Lz-3T or even 3F-3T. Oh and the edge call on the lutz in the FS. I call bullshit on that one. The angle the blade bends toward the camera had me positive that the lutz edge was correct. Her FS step sequence is choreographed beautifully. I miss the first bielmann spiral with dramatic hands in the first part of her choreosequence, but the latter was greatly improved. I’m very glad that she didn’t give up.

The program has a lot of potential. It's just not 100% there yet. I'm sure there'll be some adjustments to the choreography, particularly before the 2 minute mark (it's actually pretty good in the 2nd half). And yes, her spins did get really slow! For those with more technical experience than I have, any potential explanation as to why her spins would slow so drastically?

^ Her spins have gotten slower ever since she's gone to Nicks. Priscilla was better in that department for her IMO.

Of course they want to do well, but Gracie's legitimately taking the criticisms of and weaknesses in her skating and tackling them head-on. That's not always so common.

In another thread, it's noted that Miki Ando is out of the GP! :(

Any hope that Mirai, finally, will be considered for another GP slot, based on her Finlandia performances
