This sounds great! Keep up the good work, Mao!
WOW, this is amazing, must be quite a sight to see her land one perfect 3A after another, i'm baffled by just watching this from my screen, and hearing her land atleast 10 3A right after each other that's raw talent.
Thanks for all these updates rosewood
Mao is just unbelievable, landing more then 10 perfect 3A's right after each other is truly something unheard of, she is making history even in her practices lol, I would pay anything #just# to see her practice live sigh.
She looks really strong and fit, too, not as ethereal as sometimes. Love that too. I'm so excited!
Video clip of yesterday's runthrough.
According to the Japanese article Mao will wear GPF version SP costume in the team event, and Skate America version(the lavender one) in the individual event. She also prepared an arranged costume of Skate America version for her long program. She took both of the new costume and GPF version costume with her to Sochi. She'll chose which to wear from now. I assume she took the results of the votes(for fab costumes on Sumitomo Life Insurance face book) into consider. She said before NHK Trophy that she liked the Skate America version of the costume for her long program but it was too heavy and was not stretchable enough. I guess she made new costume based on the Skate America version, and made it lighter and more stretchable. We'll see.
some photos from the team event and the official practice
She's a class act. Go Mao!
Isn't it frustrating that she landed so many clean 3A's in practice but fell on it in the team SP? Scott said she got her ankles tangled up. Hopefully this is just an aberration and she can land clean 3A's in the individual competitions. She needs that 3A for the gold. She has developed into a wonderful artist too, and actually looks physically strong. She used to look a bit fragile.
It is heartbreaking that she fell after so many good reports from practice. Hopefully this is the one fall out of the way, and she will go clean in the individual.
Even with the fall, she is still the most beautiful skater.
Sucks that she fell, but at least she attempts the triple axel. Can anyone explain why that jump is so much harder than the triple loop?
Mao Asada: I was like, "Oh, I'm sorry." She was in the third place in the team event(SP).
(my rough translation)
"Getting unexpectedly very nervous, I failed in showing as good skating as in the practices," said Mao after the short program in the team event looking back her performance.
---This team event was the biggest stage since a quad ago. What about it?
Mao: Getting unexpectedly very nervous, I failed in showing as good skating as in the practices.
---The crowd was so excited after the Russian skater's performance.
Mao: I felt it was very Olympics.
---What about the 3A?
Mao: There weren't any clean one during the six minutes warming-up. I wished to nail one in the program as I did in the practices, though.
---After the 3A you interpreted the world of Nocturne.
Mao: I tried and calm down but I couldn't show my best skating all through the program today.
---what did you feel when you saw your team mates in the kiss&cry?
Mao: I was like "Oh, I'm sorry."
---Team Japan qualified for the final.
Mao: I'm glad.
---What about the individual event?
Mao: Keeping this experience in my mind, I'll try not to repeat the same mistake.
Wish skate god make her avoid skating just after the Russian skaters in the individual event, please. With or without that fall her program was very lovely. Hope she'll enjoy her skating in the individual event.

Did she really not land any triple axels in the warmup?
IIRC she landed one. Unfortunately two skaters were in her course, she 2footed and UR. Maybe she was not satisfied with that trial but she didn't have enough time to try one more. Hope she'll be relaxed and focus on her skating in Armenia where Team Japan camp till their individual events.
It has 3 and a half revolutions in the air; triple loop has only 3. Long ago before anyone (man or woman) landed the 3A, people were saying it would be next to impossible to do it because the axel takeoff adds a half revolution.
For ladies in particular it is much harder because it requires upper body strength. Most ladies- many of them great jumpers otherwise- can't do it.
Even some men find it difficult to land it consistently. It is THE most difficult triple jump. Some would rather do a quad toe than a triple axel (e.g. Lambiel, Barna)
Mao and Akiko left for Armenia. I forgot who it was but a commentator said today that Team Japan members were so much nervous in the team events and they didn't know why. The commentator guessed it was the first team event so they felt big pressure/responsibility for the team. Hope they'll feel relaxed in Armenia and revenge in the individual events.
I would like nothing more than to see Mao land her 3A three times in the individual competition and skate lights out to secure the OGM. Her refinement and delicacy on the ice are absolutely delightful. Best of luck to her and Akiko!
IceAlisa: Mao went back to the long program with one 3A. So she plans two 3As in the individual competition. I don't think of OGM so much but I really wish Mao and Akiko show their skate of the life in the individual competition.
OK, whatever makes it a good Olympics for Mao. But still, I would love for her to win. She is exquisite. And Akiko is such a joy. They are both on my dream podium.
Mao really does look absolutely stunning, as does Carolina Kostner. I think that both of them look the best they've ever looked, and Mao really is the best all-around skater here if that 3axel shows up in the competition like in practice. Every aspect of her skating has improved since the last Olympics, I didn't really realize how much overall until you compare to the last two programs. I felt GOE was rather strict on her also on the jumps she landed, the 3flip is much improved over 4 years ago.
I'm relieved that Mao had that mistake, I don't think a clean program would've motivated her as much as a fall going into the individual, plus everyone already assumes that Lipnitskaya will be OGM it seems at this point. The crowd really responded to her, I think she would be welcomed as the Olympic Champion big-time with clean performances. I also really want her to win. If not her, then Carolina Kostner. Yuna Kim winning would be fantastic as well.
Anybody but Lipnitskaya, who I adore but come the eff on. She's competing with three of the all-time bests in their all-time best shape, if any of those three are clean in the competition I don't think anybody should beat them. I really hope it's Mao, I think a majority of people Russia-love aside feel the same way, so I'm assuming the judges will feel the same and reward her with skates despite the crazy.
Mao made mistakes at the GPF yet beat a clean Julia. I think Mao will fight back and skate well. I don't know if it will be enough, but we will see. She definitely needs the 3A to win.
I don't believe Carolina can be technically competitive against Mao, Julia and Yu na. She has a chance only if one of these three makes mistakes.
Wasn't that comp in JAPAN? She won't get away with that here.
Yes, and she may have gotten some home ice advantage, like Hanyu did too. Most skaters do better on home ice and get judged a little more leniently when skating at home. However, IIRC her LP mistakes at the GPF were not major, and in the LP there is more room to make up for those lost points. In the SP there is less of that, and a fall and a downgrade on a jump is unfortunate. I would rather see her two foot the jump and save it, but may be she will actually land it clean.
Lysacheck praised Mao's footwork, "transitions, edges, speed, multi-directional movement; she has all of that stuff."
I hope the judges will give her due credit when they give the PCS marks.
Here is a link to Mao's practice:
She landed a clean 3A and all other jumps looked good too. She looks strong physically.
I am both worried and very happy about her SP draw. I really do think the judges will reward her with 1st place if she's clean, but she has 5 skaters to sit through (better not 5 LPs though). I'm really worried about her nerves and her ability to attack as much as she will need to. I've never seen her look so beautiful on the ice.
I do think of the Big Three, Mao has the best/most transitions and in between steps throughout her program yet she is always below both Yu-Na and Carolina in that mark despite the fact the two them skate on two feet a lot more than Mao does. Both are faster than Mao but that's because they do a lot of uninterrupted crossovers to get speed.
PCS has a lot to do with reputation. If Carolina were a little more consistent, she would be getting higher PCS than Yuna.
Hope you can pull off your 3A and be on the podium at Olympics!
I saw Mao today! I got her autograph! But she was with Akiko and Kanako and I didn't ask for their autographs... (I'm running out of pages in my autograph book).
You're so lucky!
