Unfortunately this is what much of "country music" sounds like currently. It's all become popified a la Taylor Swift (started back with Faith Hill).

The only traditional sounding country comes from George Strait and Alan Jackson for the guys; Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, and Trisha Yearwood for the gals. There are probably others, but these are the first I can think of.

Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Don Williams, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Jessi Colter etc, etc. All old school and some may not be around a lot longer.

Thanks for adding to the list! :)

My Aunt Helen loves Don Williams...I think he's her favorite. I saw Willie a couple of times at his picnic performances here in Texas (early 70s). And with all the nips and tucks, I think Dolly will be around FOREVER! :glamor:

EDIT: And to keep the thread gay, Chely Wright was the first country artist to officially come out in 2010 (former country artist k.d. lang came out in 1992 but had abandoned the country music genre by then and Kristen Hall, formerly of Sugarland, was already known as being out in the folk music genre).

In 2011 she married LGBT rights advocate Lauren Blitzer; in May 2013 Chely gave birth to their identical twin sons George Samuel and Everett Joseph. :)

    EDIT2: via Twitter...

    RE:Gay Movies

Shelter is probably my favorite gay themed movie ever. It's just a beautiful love story.
Also a fun one was Were the World Mine. It's a musical with a Midsummer Night's Dream theme. Cute story with some great songs.

I agree Big Eden is worth the watch, however, I did not have the same reaction as most people I've talked to about this movie. I didn't like it at all.:slinkaway I just don't understand how the lead was the object of affection for not one, but two guys (one even questioning his heterosexuality for him). Superficial reasons aside, personality-wise he wasn't bringing much to the table. Why did he have such a following in this town? Also, with Pike being such an introvert (unfortunately kind of creepily at times) and having very little interaction with Henry, I found myself wondering if these two do get together, what would they even talk about? I didn't see any chemistry there at all.

Movie reviewer Rantasmo summed up well what I was thinking when I was watching it.

One thing I appreciate about Big Eden is that I've never seen a movie set in a world where the main character being gay was really treated as if he was straight. You saw people trying to hook him up with Pike and encouraging that relationship the way a female lead in a mainstream romcom would have been "helped" by the supporting cast.

I think it provides an interesting perspective on the way people look at homosexuality and what can be the ideal world where people only think about another person's sexuality when they're trying to play match-maker or asking if a loved one is seeing anybody and why not.

So Father Scalia considers himself an "ex-gay"? It's hard to tell from the article.

Re Big Eden: I have mixed feelings with this film, perhaps a second watch is in order. For once it's refreshing to see a native American in a gay film as the lead! Can anyone name another gay film where the lead is a native American man? *crickets* *crickets* The way everyone was so nurturing to the gay couple , without their sexuality being an issue, was something that I don't remember seeing in another film. I know it's not realistic blah blah blah it was nice to see everyone root for the gay guys for a change.

The problem was that Pike was written as too cold while Dean and Henry had an obvious connection together. It took me back to when you're in high school and you fall for the straight jock that you know will never see you that way! Ugh! I found myself rooting for Dean to turn gay.

Re Gay Country singer, Tom Cullis photographed him a few times. I'm not saying the pic is NSFW... but I can totally see a few fsu-ers waging their fingers non the less.

The video is a good ol' cheesfest, but bless him he's trying. I'm going to buy a copy of the song as a token of appreciation for errr his music.

"homosexual tendencies… do not constitute a fixed, unchangeable aspect of the person and therefore should not be considered an orientation"

something tells me Paul Scalia is a very damaged gay man. The things he says are sometimes even worse than his father's! Plus he's a very angry catholic priest. I mean don't make me say it, but I wouldn't trust him... :shuffle:

Professional Bowler Scott Norton Becomes First Openly Gay Male Nominee For ESPY Award

    Pic: http://towleroad.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c730253ef01901e29bd4b970b-200wi

Professional Bowler Scott Norton has become the first openly gay male to be nominated for ESPN's Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Award. Norton, who came out publicly in 2011 (http://www.towleroad.com/2011/05/professional-bowler-scott-norton-i-am-a-gay-athlete.html), has been nominated for the Best Bowler ESPY. Outsports reports:

"After such a monumental week for LGBT rights, what an incredible feeling to be a part of something to take us a step even further towards equality," Norton told Outsports. "I am so excited to be the first of what I hope will be a long line of world-class openly gay male athletes nominated for this prestigious award."

    ...

Norton was made nationally famous when ESPN aired video of him kissing his partner (http://www.towleroad.com/2013/01/es...cott-horon-kissing-hubby-after-win-video.html), Craig Woodward, after a tournament earlier this year; It's believed to be the first celebratory "gay kiss" ESPN has ever aired.

While no gay man has ever been nominated for an ESPY either before or after coming out publicly, several out lesbians have been nominated for ESPY Awards in the past. This year, Brittney Griner has been nominated for Best Female Athlete and for Best Female College Athlete.

And if you would like to help Norton and Griner win their respective ESPYs, you can vote HERE:

Well, I may have named several that no longer sing or are no longer in the business, but their music is still pretty popular. And, of course, Tammy Wynette passed away several years ago.

Meet The Couple Who Entered into Arizona's First Civil Union

    Pic: http://towleroad.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c730253ef01901e2d4f33970b-500wi

Kathy Sowden and Deborah Grier have been together for 21 years, and now they share Arizona's very first civil union, as KGUN9 reports:

Sometime small steps in small towns lead to big changes. In Bisbee, Kathy Sowden and Deborah Grier went to Bisbee City Hall to file the papers to recognize their 21 year relationship as a formal civil union.

The documents spell out how they want to handle some of the privileges that come with marriage like the ability to make medical decisions for each other.

Bisbee's City attorney says because the city wrote the documents like a contract between two people, Bisbee's civil union carries legal weight outside Bisbee and throughout the US.

As we reported in early April, the Bisbee City Council voted 5-2 to approve a civil unions bill for same-sex couples, making it the first jurisdiction in the [state] to do so. The following month, the council approved an amended version of the provision in the face of a threatened lawsuit by Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne alleging the civil unions legislation conflicted with state law. The revised measure explicitly stated that "the city of Bisbee makes no warranty or guarantee regarding the legality or enforceability of any agreements or nominations of the parties."

Last month, the Tucson City Council unanimously approved its own civil unions bill. Previously, the city had offered a domestic partnership registry that offered limited rights, such as hospital visitation privileges. The new civil unions law provides couples with inheritence rights and power of attorney and allows them to establish living wills for each other.

    International pride parades:

PHOTOS: Pride in Madrid Is the Hottest So Far
Spain is one of the most LGBT accepting countries in the world, which accounts for the relaxed, sexy attitude of the celebrants.

    PHOTOS: Canada's Largest Pride
Hundreds of thousands filled the streets of Toronto to take part in Canada's largest Pride parade.
BY DANIEL REYNOLDS JULY 08 2013 1:00 PM ET

Toronto's 33rd Pride parade drew hundreds of thousands to the heart of the city in June to wave rainbows flags alongside Canada’s red maple leaf. Marchers walked down the street on stilts, in drag, on Rollerblades, or alongside children, friends, and family members who had come out to support the LGBT community.

A diverse range of groups were represented in the procession down Yonge Street, from red-plumed Trojan men to garlanded firefighters to members of the city’s police force. A large contingent of men, bearing the banner “Foreskin Is Fabulous,” even marched nude down the street, following on the heels of a leather-masked man wielding a whip, a bare-chested woman leading a man on a leash, cast members of MTV Canada’s 1 Girl 5 Gays, and a giant Pfizer balloon advertising Viagra.

Politics also played its part in the proceedings. Ontario’s first openly gay premier, Kathleen Wynne, became the first premier to march in the parade, eliciting cheers and applause from the crowd as she passed. Other political figures were the target of sartorial satire. One marcher wore a pink undergarment printed with the words “Rob Ford’s Pink Slip,” a tongue-in-cheek critique of Toronto’s mayor.

The tone was jubilant, however, as Canada also commemorated the 10th anniversary of its first same-sex marriage and celebrated the historic rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court, which had dominated the front pages of its newspapers only days earlier.

I can see how not everyone would like Big Eden. The reason it's my favorite gay-themed film is because, unlike almost every gay film out there, it's about a love triangle between three aging, ordinary looking guys approaching 40; it's not about sex (I don't think the word "sex" is even mentioned), it's about relationships. Normal relationships. Nothing takes place in a disco or a gym. Bigotry is absent from the film, so there are no verbal slurs of any kind. It's a happy, uplifiting ending: there's no disillusionment or failed relationship and no one dies of AIDS or some other disease. (Plus, I find Eric Schweig unbelievably hot!) And the townspeople are hilarious! Yes, it's a fantasy but, as the director noted, we're much closer to it than we've ever been before.
