Right because maybe they can't do anything else in an hour, but can after more practice.
Bland McDance...I love it. Sorry kwanfan1818, TPTB wouldn't allow me to give you any more rep for awhile.....
Exactly. Plus, between auditions and vegas round, they'd have time to hit a class or two in something other than their own style.
Bland McDance would be an awesome username.
Holley, I provided said rep for you.
Wow - they showed us an entire ballroom audition- and it was great. I was mesmerised by him, and my husband was by her (Misha?). I never catch the dancer's names at this stage.
He probably couldn't judge the weeks that Allison performs, but he could be a guest judge other weeks. I think that would be great.
Really nice that they're pretty much only showing us good auditions now, even though I'm still irritated by the stupid audience reaction shots during the dances.
Ballroom couple was great! But he seemed a lot better to me than she was - sharper, faster, more attack - of course, she is a hot mamacita so gets the tongue bathing
I was prepared to be about the daughter of the jazz singers who's looking to get into "the industry". But she was fantastic! Her solo incorporated a lot of the moves we've seen from way too many contemporary dancers, but she performed them as if they meant something more than "look at me! look at my extension! give me a prize!", which is the hallmark of all those interchangeable competition barbies.
The guy who danced to the Zoe Keating music was also amazing
Glad sever stutter guy got through - loved when Nigel was all "I'm going to make you talk a lot and we won't interrupt you" and he was "PLEASE finish my sentences so I don't have to flail up here!!!". I wonder if they told him he couldn't tap or use other techniques that he talked about beforehand while he was up there to ease the stutter.
What was with Family Week? And was anyone else surprised by some of the dancers who got tickets straight to Vegas? There was a white contemporary dancer - I think the guy with the sparkly pants who wanted Austin to represent a little freakier - who made me miss what the show used to be...dancers who weren't already completely pro level, but who had great potential...but I thought no way, he would be lucky to get to the choreo round, and he got a ticket! Also, the son of the dance studio family - son was good but not quite there, and his dad totally pwned him in the dance off. Get dad on the show!!
But what can I say, I fell for the shameless heartstring-pulling stunt of having a family of Exorcists on stage I noticed after Mama Exorcist got onstage that she was also wearing a #, and thought, clearly Exorcist is getting through but it would be mean to show all this and not send her too. So, even though that was in no way an actual audition, I approve of sending the whole family. Cause sometimes I need something to counteract my grinchy cynicism
Bland McDance and the Competition Barbies. Excellent name for a ....movie? Straight to video.
And thanks, Rob....
I haven't finished watching the whole thing, but I thought the latin dancers were great. The ballet guy from Orlando Ballet? Not so great. Eek, the guy with the dislocating arms - he is going to be so sorry he did that when he is older - I used to be able to jump rope with my arms, and they'd come out of socket with no pain, and now at 52, it hurts to sleep on them and it is hard to lift my arm over my head.
I'm glad I watched DWTS last night and missed the "Exorcists"!
I actually enjoyed it. The kid is musical and obviously plays the "I point at you and you do stuff" game when her parents are practicing, so it looked fairly well choreographed. My guess is that the producers know that Exorcist has been taking classes, so it was straight through.
Really enjoyed the flexer, in general I love bone breaks, tutting and flexing, but on the other hand many of these dancers want to claim credit for innovating these moves when in reality they have been used in contortion for who knows how long and also in New Way Vogue as well. Still wonderfully talented and I love popping my shoulders out myself so I can't blame them.
I just watched my tape today. Exorcist guy made me tear up and cry again, and they really didn't even focus on him as much as they did the child and the 3 of them! I generally don't like that kind of movement and dancing so how the hell does he do that to me?! I still remember him from last time and the same thing happened.
And what was the name of that song he used if anyone remembers?
"My Immortal" by Evanescence. Same song he used last year.
I really wish they would cut out the audience reaction shots during the auditions. They seem completely fake...
^^agreed, not to mention it feels like you see just as much audience & judges shots as you do the dancing & it's starting to drive me crazy!
There were several good auditions last night.
Too bad that Enoch -- sad story aside -- couldn't get through choreography.
I think he may have been invited just to present that work dedicated to his cousin. If he had any real intention of competing, he would have been taking partnering classes.
I thought that might have been the case, also.
Honestly I don't even think his original audition was good. Emotional, yes but not good. He has had plenty of time to take classes and get to be an all around better dancer. it seems he didn't. Too bad. I would love to see him back and triumph. There does seem to be a lot of exceptional talent this year. Some of the people though are being chosen for their stories and or their telegenic quality.
I thought that bitchy guy coming back was interesting. Personally I think he deserved to go through to Vegas. But he should have done the choreo. But I also get why he was pissed based on their comments. I know the judges want to see how he can work with others but they could also see that in Vegas and send him home then. I know he is a brat but I kind of get why he was taking a stand for himself. And he may have behaved better if he was sent to Vegas and turned it around. I doubt it but I think part of his attitude was based on being rejected and being called "un-masculine" in the first place. Which is pretty fricken insulting even if it is true. He did try and improve. But guy needs to get to therapy and figure out why he needs to prove himself to the world and be individual at the expense of his career. Dance is about partnership and working with others.
I wish I could get into the ballroom stuff more but it just seems so fake or "performed teeth and tits" to me a lot of the time. That guy that took his shirt off was pretty hot. Blonde girl was good but kind of left me cold. I liked Salsa girl but I think she has a ways to go yet. But I felt her as more authentic in her expression. Her body is to die for. And I would love to see her brother back. What a sweetie.
I wish Nigel would shut up during the performances.
Anthony Bryant was on that awful Carrie Bruno competition show, and he didn't make it through to the end, but I don't recall him being quite so bratty.
He totally should have been put through to Vegas even if they eliminate him early because of his 'tude there. Plus what was the big deal about his costume?
I loved the ballerina-turned-jazz dancer. Her ballet training really shines through; gorgeous feet and lines and she is gorgeous to boot. I loved the Jennifer Beals comment...that was cute.
I loved Toshi too. Very entertaining even though he barely spoke any English...
I liked the salsa dancer with her little brother. ITA chantilly; girlfriend's body is to die for!
The ballet dancer whose brother flew her out to the audition was really good too though she looks almost a little too skinny to me. Loved her leg lines though...
I liked the tap dancer girl too...very cute.
The guy they toyed with by telling him to stay for choreography and then giving him his ticket straight to Vegas was excellent too.
Overall, good auditions. I love it when they have Adam Shankman and Jessie Tyler Ferguson on the panel. They are two of my favorites.
Agree with all of this.
Toshi was entertaining, but I'd have sent him to choreography rather than straight to Vegas. If he can't dance with someone else he's going to get cut after the first day.
Loved the ballet and ballroom dancers. And Adam Shankman's Bruno Toniolli impression was funny.
Ditto to your comments,, kwanatic.
I liked the salsa dancer with her little brother. I was impressed by her determination and his willingness to try something that could have made him look like a fool to give his sister a chance.
Is this really the last season because I would really like to see little brother in the future.
ITA on Toshi. I don't know what they do when one partner completely messes up the other in Vegas, but I would have sent him to choreography too. Hopefully he will surprise.
I don't know if they have officially canceled SYTYCD, but I doubt it will last 3 more years.
Is the bolded sentence about salsa dancer's little brother? (The sentences surrounding that one are about Toshi, but "partner" mention threw me.) If so, at 16, I'm pretty sure that little brother is too young to actually appear on SYTYCD. If you weren't referring to him, then nevermind ...
ETA: I just re-read your post, and I now believe you were wondering about Toshi -- i.e., if he couldn't cut it in Vegas and messed up in the partnering, whether it would held against his partner. I would hope that the partner would get another chance, if they seemed capable of performing at a higher level, but not sure how they handled this situation in the past (there must have been instances of this before).
If ratings improved this summer, then it might get a reprieve for another season, but I, too, don't think it would last 3 more years.
Right, I was talking about Toshi.
Watching tonight's episode. Is this the last week of auditions?
at Nigel creeping on one of the dancer's moms.
Anyone else watching?
Loved the Mongolian dancer- I hope she can do choreography.
Some good auditions tonight- liked the kid with the loud Mom (despite Nigel)- but if she were my Mom I'd be embarrassed.
I liked that kid too. Unfortunately he had the embarrassing mom, creepy Nigel and then Mary yelling at the top of her lungs for what seemed like eons. I felt bad for him all the way around.
Liked the trapese girl. A lot actually.
And loved Caleb, the quirky guy. He seems to have skills in a bunch of dance areas but not sure how much over-all. But he is a good actor and tells a good story. His personality is very appealing.
The kid with the loud Mom was good. Animation guy was OK. good at what he did but I didn't think he was as good as Cyrus nor did he have as much personality which is what Cyrus got through on last year. The girl Jasmine? that was his ex was great though.
Car accident guy was good but needs to gain some weight IMO.
But honestly this was probably the weakest audition city for me. There were people they gushed over I was just meh on. Can't remember his name but there was a guy who had great legs and feet but was really tight in his upper body and had very low leaps.
Lots of notable dancers tonight. The guy who was in the car accident is lovely - his feet are to die for Cha Cha dancers were great - LOVED him, too bad he is too young for the show this year. If this really is the final season, we wuzrobbed!!
What is the deal with ALL of the family auditions now? Tonight it was clear that several of the auditioners' parents were prepped to come on stage, which made it significantly less interesting than it was the first few times. The Dance Dad was certainly dedicated, but I thought his daughter was nothing special I did like the lucky pigs, though, and obviously with all that prep they weren't going to NOT send her through. Nerd boy is an entertaining performer, but nothing on the level of the Kasprzak brothers. His technique was ok but really unpolished and his feet were noticeably lax.
Arial dancer was beautiful, Mary got it right when she called her performance liquid. Also loved the mongolian bowl dancer - lovely to see a new style on the show.
Cyrus' ex-gf story was excruciating. Poor girl, if she makes it to the Top 20 they'll be bringing up Cyrus every time they talk to her. She was really fantastic, though.
I feel bad the salsa girl didn't get through the choreography round...it looked before like the choreo was some form of ballroom, but during her group it looked like they were doing hip hop. Also sorry the guy in white who basically did pointe work in his sneakers found it too difficult to continue.
On to Vegas!
ETA: I take back my snarking about the family auditions. I don't think we got any famewhore joke/crazy deluded people auditions or any that were just awful. I will gladly sit through some awkward Dance Dads instead of the latest audition from Sex
Cyrus' ex was the only one who really stood out for me. Plus she gets bonus point in my book for auditioning with an actual shirt on as opposed to most contemporary girls who think it's required to show their torso.
Dance Dad girl was a better performer than dancer, IMO.
They should've put him through instead.
I'm sure that he's been using an extraordinary amount of energy to recover.
ITA that nerd guy actually isn't that good. Very unpolished.
Loved Cyrus' girlfriend. She evidently lives in the town where my ballet studio is located-wonder where she trains? But we aren't contemporary so....I thought she was not only a lovely dancer but has a gorgeous face if she would take that dumb wad of hair up out of her eyes. Fabulous cheekbones. Very elegant body and carriage.
Loved chacha girl and the accident boy. He had a very appealing face. Pretty hair too! Oh...and he danced well....
Still way way way too many blah contemporary girls rolling around on the floor who get sent to Vegas and I'm going WHAT??????
Separate names with a comma.
