It doesn't start for awhile, but there's some changes this season and Nigel has been periodically tweeting them.

Apparently there are still more to come. Thoughts?

 How can they not have a Top 20? Unless maybe its a Top 24 or Top 18 or something simple like that?

And how can only one dancer leave each week? They have to be even numbers to have partners? So someone dances without a partner or gets a pass the next week or something?

Although I don't mind the switching partners every week. But not a random draw because there's still a chance you don't have to switch. I would like to see them rotate partners each week so that you never dance with the same person twice.

But I'm very . Can we just end American Idol now and start SYTYCD next week?

That reminds me ... Billy Bell (that was his name, right? Kid who made the Top 20 this past season but got sick before the start of competition?). He gets a pass to this season, right? Where does he pick up? Does he have to go to Vegas rounds again, automatic spot on the show, or what? I don't remember.

I read something about them maybe doing trios or other configurations so they wouldn't need it to be two out each week. But I don't know if that was just someone's idea of how it would work. I do like the partners changing each week.

If I remember correctly, Billy Bell makes it automatically to the Las Vegas top 100.

Billy's just started his own dance company in NYC and his Bio refers to him as SYTYCD alum, so I'm thinking he's decided not to pursue Season 7.

I was never under the impression that the dancers were the ones choosing their genres.

The change that I'd love to see them announce is that they will no longer choose and promote a dancer based on things other than their dance ability and performances.

 Wasn't he only like 17 years old? Or maybe I just don't remember right. How do you start your own dance company anyway? What does that entail and what do you do with that? Just wondering.

:shuffle: What do you mean? Sometimes I don't understand all the little insider things that are going on during the run like you folks who are in dance circles talk about. I just watch cause I like it (and am extremely jealous I can't dance even a tiny fraction of a fractin of a fraction of a bit like those kids). :D So whadday mean?

I just mean that it annoys me no end when they clearly pass over better dancers for the cute young things and then promote them (despite their relatively weaker performances) because they are so darn perky and cute. (Remember how Mollee and her partner were chosen and then treated?) And it drives me crazy when they reject someone based on personality or criticize someone based on perceived personality or character and therefore hurt their chances of staying in the competition as long as they deserve to. Danny is the most glaring example. But, there have been plenty of other examples.

I would love for this to happen - hopefully it would free up the gender assignments of the dances - there is so much more to dance (especially modern contemporary than boy/girl duos.

Well, really, just by coming up with a name and auditioning your choreography under that name you can start a company. you can either establish a business under that name or use it at a D/B/A. someone further along in the careeer (or just damned confident) may want to establish their company with a big splash, get non-profit status, hire dancers officially, establish a home base, but all that takes a lot of capital. but anyone can start a dance company and grow it into something larger if it is successful.

insider? since the beginning of this show people have opined in the SYTYCD threads that the producers choose the dances for the performers and only put one slip into the hat that they "choose" from. Does anyone really think the choices have been accidental?

So, Nigel has tweeted more information. The contestants will be paired with dancers from past seasons. If they bring back Mollee, I am going to be really annoyed. I'm guessing Travis, Lauren, Dmitri, and Lacey will be there. Not sure how I feel about this format change, but I definitely don't like his statement that America will vote and one of the bottom three will go home. It sounds like Nigel and his folks will get to decide who goes home every week. I don't like that all. The person with the lowest number of votes should go home. The judges and producers already do far too much to manipulate the results.

I'm not sure Lacey will be there. I seem to remember once she was on DWTS she had quite a few nasty things to say about SYTYCD.

Scroll down for the format changes/press release:

Maybe this is a way to give some extra work to some of the S6 dancers since they didn't get a tour.

Some of that is good news:

-I like the idea of seeing the old dancers again. With DWTS the pros don't disappear after one season, and I always hated that about SYTYCD.

-Mary as a permanent judge was just too much and I'm thrilled to see her doing choreography again.

    -Mia is back. :cheer:

I don't know that I like the thought that the "all star" dancers will always be doing their own style. That's probably best for someone like Artem or Twitch (random example, I'm not saying they're on the show) but I thought Lacey was just as good at contemporary and hip-hop as ballroom, so I wouldn't want a dancer like her pigeonholed like that.

Nigel is going to tweet the 10 all stars over the new few weeks. IMO some of the best alums are Travis (2), Allison(2), Danny(3), Jeanine(5), Pasha(3), Anya(3), Will(4), Natalie (2), Kathryn(6), Jakob(6) and Blake(1), but Blake has already said he's not doing it, and I'm sure many others have commitments of some sort. I'll bet Katee will be an All Star, Nigel's obsessed with her.

ETA- Travis has confirmed he will NOT be an all star, he will be a choreographer.

Kayla will be. I almost guarantee if she's free to work she'll be on. I think also Alison, Jamie and Katee. Though all 4 of those ladies are pretty much the same style so perhaps not. I don't think the all stars are being judged so they are just professional dancers like DWTS's have. I think Pasha and Anya will be chosen if they are free. I hope so any way!

They'll need a variety of styles so they can't have 4 contemporary women if the all-stars will always dance in their own styles. Unless the pool of all-stars is more than 10 and we see different ones each week. I could see Russell being in there for hip hop & krump. But I would love to see Joshua again.

I would be stunned if we don't see all the past winners, with the possible exception of Sabra. Then other favorites like Katee, Twitch, Pasha and Kayla. I think it sounds like a stupid format, but we will see how it all pans out.

    Nick - Contemporary
    Benji - WCS
Sabra - contemporary but she's kinda dropped off the radar screen so I agree she's iffy
    Joshua - Hip Hop
    Jeanine - Contemporary
    Russell - Krump

They'd need a female hip hop, a female ballroom/latin, a real male ballroom/latin. So either Pasha/Anya or Ryan/Ashleigh fit in there. Female hip hop? Donyelle, Sara, Comfort who else?

And would they consider the latin people to be the disco "specialists" or do they bring in someone like Janette who can do a variety of things.

And does this mean they never do Bollywood or folk again, because they don't have specialists for those? :(

That would be a drag. I doubt they'd do Russian again, but Bollywood has become a staple. I guess they could do a group Bollywood or the finals could have Bollywood - they are apparently going to dance with each other at the end.

So the contestants will ALWAYS be paried with a 'specialist'? :blah:

Here's what worries me: whenever Travis choreographs for the show, the judges spend sp much time going ape-shit over his choreography (and it's true, a lot of it has been really great) that they barely comment on the dancers. I foresee a LOT of gushing about how perfect the specialists are (and a lot of patting on the back about how SYTYCD made them what they are today), and a lot of either not commenting on the person who is there to be judged, or unfair comparisons to their partner. Also, if a pairing isn't very good, I'm guessing it'll end up being the fault of the current contestant when it might just be a crappy pairing that the judges made.

Also bummed if this means no more Bollywood or other niche style that they don't have a SYTYCD alum to specialize in.

It would also be a little  if someone is suddenly a specialist in Bollywood just because they did it once on the show and on tour.

SYTYCDism is reporting a rumor that none of the past winners are included. But no one knows so its just speculation at this point, not a spoiler.

Rumor from SYTYCDism is that Lauren (no shock there), Courtney, and Allison are going to be part of the show. Also not surprising, Danny reportedly has not been invited to take part.

I wish they'd bring Mark in to choreograph.

Ugh. I hate Lauren. Totally reminds me of a beyotch at work who I cannot stand and who not only kinda looks like her ... she even has the same name. :scream: So because of that I can't stand her. :shuffle:

I was thinking this too. I mean, if I was a contestant trying to get votes, and I was partnered by and thus being inevitably compared to the SYTYCD ultimate "expert" in the style given.....heck-that's really stacking things against the contestants, isn't it? I mean, bring back the all stars, but don't make the contestants have to compete with them, figuratively anyway, as well as the other contestants! Feels like a basic design flaw.

Only 2 I do not want to see are Kayla and Kerrington- 2 "Ks".....dislike at a visceral level. Go figure-don't know why. But I love me some blonde girls like Chelsie and Heidi!

Crossing my fingers so much for Anya and Pasha to be the ballroom representatives.

So, three of the five females are contemporary/jazz? And those are the best three they wanted to/could get back? The only one that excites me is Allison.

    Also, that sucks about Danny.

What exactly is the problem between Danny and the show (there obviously is one, because they never mention him the way they do other great participants from the show) - does the rumor mill have anything to say about this? Did he leave with bad feelings because of the whole way he was presented as "arrogant", or did something else happen?
