Soccer Shocker: #1-ranked US women in danger of not qualifying for 2011 World Cup

USA loses to twentysomething ranked Mexico in WC qualifying tourney.

Mexico had been 0-24-1 against the U.S. ... until yesterday. Kudos to them!

Now, to make the '11 WC field, the US team must first beat Costa Rica (Monday) to claim third in this CONCACAF tourney. And then they'll have to come out better in a home-and-away versus Italy (Euro #5 qualifier), later this month. Winning the first of those two, in Italy, would be enormous.

I watched both games on CBC Bold last night and first off...

    WAY TO GO TEAM CANADA!!!

Congratulations to my girls on Qualifying for next summer's World Cup in Germany. The game was far closer than the score of 4-0 would lead you to believe and a bit of a nail biter too.

Now...Ended up having to look some stuff up online for the Parents, so didn't get back to the US/Mexico match until the last minutes of the last half. I did see that first goal and a good portion of the first half before that though and...I don't know what was wrong w/the US girls last night, but they were off. Maybe they thought it would be a cake walk since it was *only* Mexico? Not sure what happened, but I still can't believe Mexico pulled off the upset and full kudos to them for a fantastic effort and win last night.

What really shocked me more though was watching the Medical Teams working on the two girls who slammed into each other and ended up w/cuts. That US girl's slash just had the blood streaming from it, the Mexco player also had a bleeding cut and what were the Medical Team's doing? Working on those two W/out wearing rubber/Surgical Gloves!!!

Could not believe what I was seeing last night and I still don't today. I thought that Univerals Precautons were strictly enforced in Sports these days when it comes to treating athletes coming off the field of play that's bleeding.

    Still stunned by that one.

This is a disgrace that Team USA finds themselves in this position. But even with that said they still are in a decent position to advance. I'm guessing that they just figured that they'd show up and the Mexican women would roll over. Guess not.

BTW, ESPN is PRAYING that the USWNT advances, otherwise ratings will be a disaster!

    The ratings will be zero..;)

BTW, why isn't this CONCACAF comp being telecast in the US?

NJL (I'd like to point out that this was posted on the "let's talk footie" thread)

ETA: Evidently the USA Costa Rica match will be shown live on ESPN2 at 6PM EST. If the USA advances the matches against Italy should be shown, too. We'll see.

ETA2: Maybe we won't see. ESPN only has the game listed under online ESPN3. Regular Monday night programming is listed for ESPN2, both online & locally.

USA on to Italy on the 20th after a 3-0 win over Costa Rica.

Congrats to Canada on their 2nd CONCACF women's Gold Cup.

USA 1-0 over Italy in Italy. USSoccer site finally has the highlight video posted. Take a peek at it. Then click on the separate feature video on Alex Morgan's 94th minute winning goal. It's in Italian. I do not disagree with the Italian announcers assessment of events...:)

Whoa, that score could've easily been USA 6, Italy 0! The USA threatened again and again and again, and Italy fended with talent, creativity, and luck ... until finally running out of steam seconds before the end. I'm sure that they're gutted that they couldn't hold on and don't give a sh*t about moral victories, but props to Italy for keeping it scoreless for so long.

Italy & USA play again tomorrow at 1PM CST. It is not televised, but can be followed online on ESPN3 or the USSoccer site's MatchTracker.

We'll see what we'll see. Or hear what we hear. Or read what we'll read. Or whatever...;)

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. But, yeh, this will help Team USA in the long-run.

USA was assigned to Group "C". They drew Sweden, Korea DPR (North Korea), & Colombia in their group. That's all I can find right now. Will tell more when I know more...:)

Canada got quite the "reward" for winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

    Equitorial Guinea qualified?

Boy, the Canadians were done no favors by FIFA. The Germans are excellent, the French are improving, and the Nigerians, while not that talented, play hardnosed physical football, and you know you've been in a game when you play them.

On the other hand, the Yanks should have no problem advancing.
