Such horrible timing! 2-6 months recovery time a very broad spectrum, but maybe it turns out this isn't that severe? Fingers crossed for them.

So sad, it seems that for 2-3 years they were constantly injuried. They are beautiful to watch.

All too true. And aren't they Moskvina's last team? I love her as much as I admire this team's tenacity.

A black thundercloud seems to follow this team. Very sorry for Smirnov, Kavaguti, and Moskvina. Certainly they are out of the GP and I would assume Russian nationals also. Beyond that....

I feel so bad for him. :( I guess his one legged lifts have finally caught up to his landing leg. I'm curious what the doctors will say as all ligament damage isn't the same.

I also question Moskvina in having them do a meaninglessly local competition a week and a half before they leave for their first Grand Prix in Canada?

This really puts them at a huge disadvantage going into nationals with only one competition under their belts AND being injured and that’s IF they can compete at NHK which is only 4 weeks away and that’s still doubtful.

Getting to the Olympics under those conditions will be a long shot; beating S/K can be done as weak as S/K are normally but with K/S injured they would be even.

If he needs surgery, their career is over. :slinkaway

Poor Smirnov, that sucks. I can't figure out, is it a tendon or a ligament? And which ligament? If it's a torn ACL, he's done for the season and presumably for good. If it's something else, they might still make it.

Very sad if this is the end of the line for them, especially since Yuko gave up her Japanese citizenship to be able to compete for Russia at the Olympics.

Patellar tendon is definitely a tendon and it's in the front of the knee, not the back like ACL. I know google translate sometimes does funny things to ligaments/tendons/muscles, but this time around the translation seems to make sense.

I got that from the Google Translate but other sources including oleada in the OP mentioned a ligament injury. So I'm not sure what exactly happened.

I've had some patellar issues so I'm familiar with the location ;) And even if it's not a really bad injury, the timing sucks.

I'm going with original translation error that got propagated online ;). Agreed this couldn't have happened at a worse time for K/S, though.

NOOOOO!!! How sad for Yuko in particular (Smirnov too!). She gave up her Japanese citizenship to go to the Olympics and came close to winning a medal in 2010. This was her last chance for a medal. I am very sorry to hear this.

It's not unusual for a team to do a small competition as a tune up before they start their big events.
