Although I don't always know the title of the song, I often enjoy it when skaters use Russian folk music.

    Some of my favorites:

Gordeeva-Grinkov: 1988 Oly ex (second number starts around 4:00 mark)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M70Js-WAE8I

    Krylova-Ovssianikov: 1996 worlds OD
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOMzwnrRD9o

Berezhnaya-Sikharulidze: 2001 worlds SP (Polyushka Pol/Meadowland) and later they skated a pro routine to a longer version of it
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3mFOfy_J-Q

Also B&S's Dark Eyes (1998 LP), Kalinka (Ex) are my favorites.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvpA_WPetJo

Mao Asada skated to Czardas LP in 2007. I think she won the LP but placed second overall.
Christopher Bowman skated a part of his LP in 87 to Czardas.
    Mao:

    Bowman:

Korobushka: Savchenk & Szolkowy SP (2011)

    Adam Rippon:

Dark eyes is probably the most popular Russian folk music.
Besides B&S, others that skated to it were Plushenko (2000 LP), Sasha Cohen (2005 & 2006 SP), Liza Tuk (2012-13 LP). Liza's music is not as good as the other three.

    Plushenko:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aGZXEs4dIE

    Sasha:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELFerA2QZX8

Others that skated to Dark eyes:

Virtue-Moir 2008 worlds OD (Dark eyes)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3yWgpdn3Es

    Akiko 2008 (Dark eyes)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKiUJ-MGWGs

    Others that skated to Kalinka:
    Rodnina-Zaitsev, Maisuradze & his new partner, Irina, Borodulin (2010 SP), Bobrova-Soloviev (2009)

    Rodnina-Zaitsev:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csfFpqLQBj4

    Borodulin:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVRE5hOrc_0

    I enjoyed Irina's LP in 1998. I think it was a medley.

Thanks for the correction. Just goes to show how little I know about eastern Europe. :)

Now it makes sense that Bowman skated to Hungarian Rhapsody and Czardas in the same LP.

I will remove this from my list of programs in the OP.

I am hoping that more posters will point out some mistakes in my post, and add to my knowledge.

Thanks so much for the thread Vash! I always enjoy these posts, it's so much fun to revisit some of my old favs and discover new ones as well. :) I haven't had the chance to watch all of the vids on the list, but about the first few:

Here is a direct link to G&G's appropirately named, "Katyusha" exhibition. http://youtu.be/6Xri-zNz1BM

I absolutely love K&O's routine. I think it might actually be my favorite K&O free dance after Carmen.

Sigh, B&S, their flow, speed on the ice. spirals and enormous triple throw really were absolutely breathtaking. :swoon: BTW, I had no idea Dark Eyes was a Russian tune.

M&D also had an exibition for the 1989-1990 season, and then bought back for the 1992 World Championships. The tune, from what I recall, was never named, but I remember seeing it labeled as a "Moldavian Folk Tune" a long while ago on FSVids. Which while isn't Russian, seems appropriate to mention because of it's F.S.U. connections. ;)

I remember the Seybolds skating to Galinka and now that I watch it again, I hear it has Dark Eyes in it as well. This is from their Worlds 1989 performance, not the US Nationals that they were supposed to win but had problems and lost to Yamaguchi and Galindo.

I ABSOLUTELY love the Russian Folk Music or any Folk Music. I actually liked Belbin and Agosto's Moldavian Folk Dance choreographed by Linuchuk.

    Elena & Anton's "Kalinka."

Does the Russian Sailor Dance count as folk music? If so, I love that too. I think Alexander Abt skated to it, and I really enjoyed his program to it.

Russian folk music was always a popular choice whenever the dance OD had a folk theme. IIRC the 07-08 season had oodles of them.

"Yablochko" (aka the Russian Sailor Dance) is from the 1926 ballet The Red Poppy. (Abt's program is the best, imo, but also Artem Borodulin, Sergei Voronov, and Bobrova/Soloviev used it as well.)

I guess it is considered folk music according to this page.

That was a favorite of B/A for me: I also love the footwork in Sasha's Olympic Dark Eyes. And now I am adding the footwork of Yuri Ovchinnikov to the list. Like the swan thread I love looking at the different interpretations of the music. Thanks Vash!

I don't think so. It is a part of the ballet 'Red Poppy'. Abt's SP to this music is one of my favorites.

B&S's Kalinka exhibition was lovely (mentioned in the OP). Such a powerful glide across the ice, charm, and fun!

I like "Dark Eyes". "Kalina", however, is high on my list of "overused, should be banned forever, I'd rather listen to a dental drill" music.

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times Dark eyes has been used (B&S, Plushy, Sasha C.). How can that be considered overused?

Kalinka has been used a little more, but nowhere close to what we consider overused music like Carmen, POTO, Don Q. No need to ban Kalinka. The only programs to this I can remember are- B&S (ex), R&Z (ex), and possibly portions of Irina's LP and K&O's FD (I don't remember which songs they had used; they were medleys).

I hope you get to listen to your dental drill music more often

Bobrova/Soloviev's gender-bender sailor OD (posted upthread) was pretty fun.

Davis/White did a Kalinka OD 2007-08. Early versions featured Charlie in a hat. For which he got a fair amount of fashion flak.

And let's not forget Winter Fun Barbie, aka Rubleva/Shafer's 2009-2010 OD.

Might want to reread my post. I said I liked "Dark Eyes". "Kalinka" is the piece I think has been done to death.

Read my post again too. I said Kalinka was used "a little more" than DE but nowhere close to being overused. It has not been used to death, like some other pieces of music. Post a list beyond what I have posted. You just dislike that music and that's fine, but it is not an overused piece of music, and it is often used in exhibitions where skaters can skate to whatever they want. You want it banned, in favor of dental drill music? I hope you get your wish for the drill music.
