We have seen some crazy costumes and some beautifully designed, sequined/lacy/multicolor costumes in figure skating. Sometimes though a very simple costume really adds to a program, by focusing on the skating and the elegance of the skater, rather than on the costume. There are many skaters that used the simplicity to emphasize their lines and elegance in their skating, and it worked very well to have simple costuming.

    Gordeeva-Grinkov:

It's difficult to find simple costumes in ice dance, but here is one by the Duschenays at the 1992 Olympics FD:

Annenko & Sretenski often used very simple and elegant costumes to emphasize the purity of their skating

    Men often have simple costumes.

That was the first example I thought of. I remember at the time that he/Yuka Sato said that it was indeed meant to focus attention on his skating.

I'm not sure what the goal was with V/M's second set of costumes for their Pink Floyd FD in 2009, but they are about the plainest ice dance costumes I can think of.

Strange that I forgot this. I saw this in person, in LA. These could very well be the plainest/simplest ice dance costumes in the modern era.

Most of Paul Wylie, Todd Eldredge's, Yuka Sato's costumes & skating fit this description. ;)

Speaking of that season's Pink Floyd programs, Olivier Schoenfelder also wore a very simple costume in the FD, and while Isabelle didn't, it wasn't particularly gaudy, either. Their Bonnie & Clyde costumes were also fairly plain for ice dance.

Virtue and Moir's free dance costumes at the Olympics were definitely spare and clean for ice dancing, and the sequins on her top didn't detract from their skating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiHKNVQWis4

I immediately thought of Gordeeva & Grinkov's Vocalise costume when I saw this thread. In addition, Gordeeva & Kulik's costume for their duet, and Katia's Brazilian Bachianas costume as well.

Ilinykh/Katsalapov can tell us all about simple costumes. If only that program were "elegant..." :shuffle:

Alissa Czisny's dresses from 2010-2011 were relatively simple, but they looked great on her and definitely didn't distract from her skating. IIRC, her mother hand-painted them. This is the SP dress, and here's her LP look.

I've always loved both that program and costume. Incidentally, that maroon dress reminds me of the crushed velvet leotards gymnasts used to wear in the mid-90s. My how fashion times have changed.

This was the second ladies program to come to mind for me right after Chen Lu's 1996. I was just about to mention it .

That program is strange to me. I can't see the skating relating to the music..

    the dress was good though.

I listed it in the OP.

I too like these costumes. They had worn the white/cream color costumes many times in the past, for other programs. The only difference in the program I noticed was the pairs spin at the end.

I think I was in the minority on the program but I loved the dress. The thing is that sometimes I look at costumes and wonder how they would look if the design was adapted for an evening gown or a dress. When I saw that particular costume I instantly wanted it as a dress (if not evening gown.)

    :wall: Indeed you did.

That's the main difference. I think the step sequence had a few minor differences as well, but I really liked the final spin and ending of the Trophee Lalique version.

I agree with most mentioned. One of my favourite ladies sp's ever is from Lu Chen in the '95-'96 season, this is my favourite performance of it:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLmmXliGTLc

I love that costume, it's prettier than the one she had later in the season, imho. Some people thought it was too simple - almost like a training dress someone once mentioned - and not suitable for a competition, but I love it and would like to see more of these kind of designs during competitions.

I loved the '98-'99 fd costumes of Bourne/Kraatz as well, that is to say, the one they had early in the season:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LywDzZa3Xqo

Totmianina/Marinin had lovely simple costumes in 2004:

May be Tamara thought the one they used for the final spin in SLC would be considered more difficult? I liked both; can't really choose, but I agree about those blue costumes- they were lovely.

Agree. And I like the costumes they wore for Meditation at the GPF in Kitchener better than the ones they wore at the Olympics.
