Really interested in ideas for the pattern dance part of the SDs for both junior (Blues) and senior (Yankee Polka). I am a bit obsessed with finding new music for patterns dances generally for our dance sessions. So fitting in with that I would love to know of what you could use for the Blues and YP.

I think this one would make a great YP

And for the blues this one

Gilles and Poirier have announced their short dance will be Mary Poppins.

That link is for the Team France K&C clip - which I'm guessing isn't what you had in mind?

Mary Poppins sounds promising... and I am sure some of the teams will be able to come up with creative ideas. Or at least, I hope so, or next year will be painful.

One thing I do know-when they had the polka as an OD for 1992 Olympic season, both R&K and Duchesnays had to scrap their original dance & make a new one, R&K after they skated at Skate America.

Here's the disputed R&K polka and the discussion:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEbgbwhoO0Y#t=1m53s

The specs on the YP are:

    Music - Polka 2/4
Tempo - 60 measures of 2 beats per minute
    - 120 beats per minute

So, if I were picking music for the polka, I'd be careful that it was really a polka.

That said, there are a bunch of songs from Mexico done in polka rhythm that are sort of the Mexican version of gangster rap, called narco corridos.

    gangsta polka, if you will.

Here's the piece that started it, Contrabando & Traicion (Smuggling & Treachery) by los Tigros del Norte
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSNYaZXQud8

The girl ends up shooting the boy and running off with the money & dope.

Some pieces are other rhythms, but a lot of them are in polka rhythms.

It might be fun to do drug gang Mexicans skating to the polka.

One of my worst skating memories is having to sit through 26 yankee polkas at Euros in 2008. So I hate the Yankee Polka and I hate the SD. It's not looking good for me ;)
    I hope in 13-14 it's tango!

I searched for the name and found another version of the video.

Not sure how well the song would work on its own.

Gilles and Poirier tweeted that they are using Mary Poppins for the SD.

I don't know which song...maybe Step in Time?

Meanwhile, here's the Orange Blossom special done as a polka

I don't care what team, but if someone skated to Weird Al, I would be their biggest fan FOREVER!

    Too funny.

And here's polka rap, believe it or not (very explicit lyrics on some of them)

bling Polka (this could actually work)

FU polka (this wouldn't, but it sure shows the range of polka expression

And here's some polka numbers for any skaters who don't want drinking and drugging and swearing polkas:

    Catholic mass polka

 Doris - the first one is a classic. I can actually picture a team using that.

If you look back through Gilles/Poirier tweets there may be some hints in there because they made little tweets about songs that had me thinking Mary Poppins. Didn't put it together with the SD but that makes for an interesting and fun idea. Love that their team (coaches/choreographers) come up with these fun ideas. One of the songs I remember them tweeting about was "spoon full of sugar" and the other might have been "chim chimeny".

    No. It's in ithyphallic rhythm.

Polka is 2/4 with 120 beats per minute.

But that didn't stop coaches from claiming a tango was an acceptable waltz rhythm either.

You know that was difficult to use because most of the song had lyrics being sung...I noticed they had to repeat parts of the music over and over.
The definition of cheesy to me...

I agree that would work. I expect to hear it from some couple.

I think the SD will have a lot of Eurovision type music.

OMG I love Alfie and lovelovelove Lily Allen. :swoon: But I'm not sure how these lyrics would go with the ISU and audiences in general. :p

Doris, could you jump ahead a year and give some examples of the Finnstep?

It may take me a while.

The Finnstep is based on Rahkamo & Kokko's OD to Borsalino, of course.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ieH0uk-cks

    But I'm guessing

    Girls, Girls, Girls

Grishuk & Platov used it, and it was great
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EqTmB96Jbk

Tanith and Ben used it too:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6FZeJU_s2Y

is next year's Mas Que Nada.

    And that we see

Let's Face the Music (and Dance) again too.

I'll try to find some less used items.

To get you all started, this might work ;)

Gene Kelly & the Worry Song

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP0kQFvj9rs

and there are over 300 quickstep songs listed at Ballroom Dancers dot com
