I thought a new thread is required to discuss all the winter-sport world cups that will be held in this olympic season. Some of the Skating and Skiing world cups have already started.

Really interested to see if Lauryn Williams, Lolo Jones or Tianna Madison make the US bobsled team. Lauryn and Tianna won Gold in London for the 4x100 and Lolo was 4th in the hurdles, had the infamous lead in Beijing only to hit the second last hurdle and throw the gold away.....

I'm interested to see if Lindsay Von can come back after her knee injury.

Let us see whether Lindsay can pull a mustafina and win gold medal at Sochi. However, I think Vonn's injuries are much serious than Musty's

I expect Viktor (Hyun-Soo) Ahn to be one of the big storylines in Sochi. For those people not familiar, Ahn won 3 gold medals for South Korea in Torino, but was unable to qualify for Vancouver. Ahn obtained Russian citizenship in late 2011.

I did not know that Ahn was the triple olympic gold medal winner from Torino

Now I understand why Russia suddenly has a solid short track speed skater who has been doing very well in the world cup since last season

I am hoping that somehow Lindsay can make it to Sochi and compete. Her latest injury may make it very difficult.

You know, I thought Speed Skating Canada having the Olympic Trials back in August was crazy. Also that while the idea of w/the Team for Sochi now chosen and accepted by the COC, that would take the pressure off for the World Cup circuit and prep for Sochi was a nice one, it didn't seem to me to be the smartest thing in the World. Well, judging from the look of things from the results so far, it's a good thing I'm not the one in charge of making those decisions. :)

Last night I watched the Luge on my TV (NBC sports network). I am not sure if it was the world cup or just the US Olympic trials (probably the latter).

This is one sport I have never watched live. I had a chance in SLC 2002, but didn't want to go to yet another cold venue (after attending Ski jump, downhill, and one more). What really jumped out at me is this has to be THE most dangerous sport. The athlete just lies on the luge, without any straps or any protection other than his/her suit plus headgear. It runs at a horrific speed, and the slightest movement can make a difference between keeping it on track and colliding with the wall. Very scary. I applaud the courage of those who even try this sport.

Luge made scarier is called skeleton. It's the same as luge but the person is on their stomach going headfirst down the track.

FYI, It was the Luge World Cup stop at Park City, Utah, but you're right, the results from this past weekend were the last of the (combined) results from the 2013-14 World Cup season to determine the Olympic Teams for the United States.

Just saw the video of the fall today and it was absolutely horrific. :scream:

And to think there was so much concern after his earlier fall, yet he recovered almost immediately...and now this. :(
