Also, Dobbs' listed height is 5'4".
And she's even taller than that now, about 5'5" or a bit more, she was taller than Mao in pictures from 4CC small medal ceremony, and Mao towers over other skaters listed as 5'4", Amanda is quite tall for a pairs skaters, too tall for Rockne and plus seems to be doing well with Joseph.
Yeah but her jumps are a complete mess, and plus she's starting Harvard this fall anyway.
There's no need to judge Blake Rosenthal's jumps by 2010 Nationals alone -- they weren't "a complete mess" when she won Eastern Sectionals last November.
Blake Rosenthal can jump decently (2A and 3S), but let's be honest, I just don't think she's a good pair skater (I realize she has very limited pair experience, but still). Her split double twist at Sectionals last year was absolutely tragic. You could blame her partner for that somewhat, but it's definitely her too. She's weak on the other pair elements as well... Her death spiral is particularly poor, and she was doing very basic lifts. Aside from that, she doesn't really know how to present well at all. She and her partner skated to Nessun Dorma last year, and it was just cold. Sorry if I'm picking this poor girl apart (her solo jumps do seem fine), but realistically, she's not going to be a high level pair skater anytime soon. It's not all about the jumps, that's for sure. Having to partner someone and complementing that person well is a completely different animal. (And as you mentioned, she's going to Harvard anyway.) But in general, you could see why it would be so hard for a singles skater to make a smooth transition to pairs.
How about Tamara Moskvina? ... She's still short.
You are not the only one who has mentioned this, and no offense, but how could people look at Dobbs and think she could skate with Rockne? She's practically his height! Even on TV she comes across as very tall for a pair skater.
You probably don't realize it but Blake was an amazing dancer. She was sent to the JGP in both singles and dance, which is incredibly rare the only other US skater I can remember is Charlie White. I see you don't like her skating, but she really did have the partnering skills and good singles skills as well.
However, stjeaskategym does raise the good point (that's worth repeating) that being a good singles skater (and jumper) does not automatically transfer over to being a good pair skater ... just as pairs and dance -- both in partnering and skills -- are very different disciplines.
Exactly... I'm not judging her ability as a dancer... I don't think I've ever seen her dance before, and if I have, I certainly don't remember it. I'm just commenting about her pair skating.
He needs someone small with good jumping capabilities and talent for pairs as well. His best bet is finding a singles skater who'd like to try pairs.
There aren't many pair girls up to Rock's standards. Sorry to them :/
Why do I have images of Betty White's mancake calendar running through my head as I read this....
Hated that Tracy Tanovich and Michael Chau broke up, but wouldn't mind seeing how she'd do with Rockne. Too bad she's so young. (Yes, much too young to skate with Brubaker. Plus, she'll probably have a growth spurt in a couple of years and get too tall, too.)
Maybe Rockne should move to Florida and see if Peterson/Johnston would be able to find him a partner there.
Tamara Moskvina? ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6Y4rQpendI
Send Rockne up here to Canada. I'm sure he can find some nice Canadian girls willing to skate with him.
It's a shame that there are so few good male partners to begin with, in both dance and pairs.
And yet when one appears, we can't find a good female match.
Poor Rockne (and Peter Tchernyshev too).
I don't think you have any up to his standard either.
I haven't heard much of Daniele Kahle. Is she still skating? Maybe she would try pairs.
She coaches in Simi Valley, CA...I think she may be too tall for Rockne.
Tell Jennifer Don to dust off her skates!
What a great idea! I forgot about Jennifer.
Yes, and she's fantastic! However, she's already paired up with Themi Leftheris. She has a consistent 3Lo, which she landed beautifully last weekend at the L.A. Open, both as a throw 3Lo and SBS 3 Lo. Unfortunately, Themi doubled his. . .
Aren't Dubé and Duhamel ranked higher than Rockne?
Probably but they both have Canadian boys lol!
Not Sasha. I'm sorry, but Sasha wants to win, and after seeing her performances in ATSS, she's in no shape to win any competitive international skating competition now.
According to a question posted on Aunt Joyce's formspring, MBM has a tryout with Rockne? Can anyone confirm?
Who is MBM?
Mary Beth Marley. This could be a good match.
Please expound. Thanks!
In case you missed it, there was some previous discussion about Marley's potential (she would be new to pairs) on page 1 of this thread. She is currently competitive in Junior Ladies this season and has the goal of qualifying for Nationals in singles (she was 1st alternate to Nationals in Jr. out of Midwestern Sectionals last season and the 2009 Novice Ladies silver medalist).
ETA: I had heard from my own sources that a tryout with Marley was likely but no other details.
Thanks, Sylvia. Will be interesting to hear how the try-out goes. Really hoping that Rockne will be able to find a good match soon.
Agreed! She's little and fast and can jump, seems very determined as well. I know she's only 15 but in pairs it's not that uncommon for the girl to be much younger than her partner.
Marissa Castelli? I think Shnapir is too tall for her.
You don't hear that one every day! The guy is too tall. I think current pairs should stick together unless something is really wrong.
I like Marley. It's hard to judge until she actually learned pairs, but she could have potential. The biggest issue with her would probably be lack of maturity/experience and the fact that she is getting better at singles and seems to want to focus on that. Balancing singles with pairs is fine... to a point. I wonder if she has grown at all since the last time I saw her. She really does look much younger than the 15 years old she is, which could be kind of weird, but what can you do.
I know I said I was against breaking current U.S. teams up, but can we send Britney Simpson to Rockne? She looks to have improved so much in the off-season (stronger jumps, better skating skills), and is clearly more talented than Nathan Miller.
Brittney is kind of tallish, and only 15 or so.
However, I'd totally get on board with Castelli/Brubaker. Marissa's clearly better than Simon - I'd think she'd shine with Rockne. That said, they'd have to get rid of the Th2A ASAP.
Yeah, it's not gonna happen; Britney actually just turned 14, but I think they would be a striking pair together.
As for Castelli/Shnapir, I like them together. I wouldn't necessarily say that she's more talented than he is, either. Marissa misses on the SBS jumps just as often as Simon, IMO. I agree about the Th2A, though...it's beautiful, but probably time to upgrade to another throw triple (which I'm sure they're aware of).
Castelli/Shnapir have been landing throw 3S in summer competitions (Liberty, Indy). I believe they've been practicing throw 3A as well.
Yeah, but Marissa's basics, expression and musicality are so much better. It's petty, but I hate the way Simon holds his arms.
Yes, they also did Th3S last season, too. I would love to see them master the Th3A!
Marissa is awesome
I've always appreciated that Marissa and Simon pick program music/themes that are not that overdone and try some lifts.
