I think that's when he learned the difference between skating smart and being reckless. After that he stopped doing his bit where he'd turn around and do the jump he just missed.

It's so weird remembering that era when Plush was 16-19. Like he's become such an epic figure in the last decade that it's bizarre seeing those old competitions when he was an awkward teenager.

I saw him win the 2001 worlds in Vancouver in person. He was just 18, and had learned from the mistakes he made the previous year. He already has such presence, and he totally commanded the ice. Needless to say, he got a standing ovation for his flawless LP performance.

This level of competitive obsession seems very unhealthy, especially for a guy who supposedly has a happy family life and kids.

He may have said/felt it in the heat of the moment. I am sure he will reevaluate it objectively. I don't see any man competing in singles at age 35.

Katia Gordeeva wrote in her book that after winning gold in 94, Sergei wanted to compete in 98 because he made a mistake in their program in 94. I am sure many athletes want to give themselves another chance. Not everyone can, and I don't think Plushenko can, but he can always think about it (until it's time for the next Olympics).

Here's to keeping this thread alive another 4 years! I think we've all given up the right to doubt him at this point!

Whether he should or not is really for him, his family, and doctors to decide. Wouldn't shock me to see him returning to skate either the SP or LP of the team event. Easy 5th medal.

Bet it's bugging him that if he were able to skate he could have comfortably won the bronze and maybe even taken the gold. But all the criticism probably has him fired up more than anything. We'll see how he feels a year or so down the road. Be nice to see him actively competing in the lead up to the next Olympics but then I've been saying that since 2006 and overall it's worked out quite nicely for him....lol love this guy!

I don't doubt his willpower at all, but I do doubt that he made anything more than a tongue-in-cheek remark and one reporter deliberately twisted his words to make a story. It certainly wouldn't be the first time... example: Russian Nats 2014.

Yeah I can't see him trying to make a go of it in 2018. I think one of the main reasons why he came back this time was because the Games are in Russia and he didn't want to miss an opportunity to skate at an Olympics in his home country.

I would never count him out of anything. Didn't he say he wanted to try to go to the Olympics in another sport? It doesn't have to be in skating.

This article was really good! Probably the best American interview with him I've ever read. With a name like "healthy living" I expected it to be fluff. I would love to see him build a school and carry on Mishin's legacy.

^ Great interview. Thanks for posting. I agree. It's probably one of the best I've seen in US media. He did a video interview a few years ago before the 2010 Olympics with American media that's pretty good as well.

What I found most interesting about this interview is that he has no interest in changing the world or in this case Russia's views on many things. Of course people will criticize him for this, but I find it kind of refreshing. Just because he has rock star status in Russia doesn't mean he should take up the political issues the country is deal with. Furthermore, I suspect his reluctance to get involved is also about keeping his head down and not inviting any unwanted unpleasantness in his and his family's lives.

He was in politics before which did not end very well. He was disappointed that he could not do a lot so probably decided that is not his thing. I think I read somewhere that he had two proposals when he was still a member of legit something for St.Petersburg: one is about building more sports facilities for children; the other is about giving free public transport pass to women of certain status (pregnant or something? I forgot). None of them got supported in the parliament. We could see from these two proposals he is a man very concerned about the practical things instead of big projects which would certainly gain more attention.

It is nice for him to stay outside politics since he is just to straight forward about things and sometimes short tempered... With his vast experiences as a sportsman, he could really do a lot of things in Sports for sure and be happy.

In early March, Evgeni Plushenko will have a new operation

News which concerns Evgeni Plushenko, who won gold in Sochi in the team tournament, but due to back pain, he was unable to continue the fight in the individual competition and was placed in one of the Israeli hospitals. And as it became known, while on the ice, after athlete's jumping the broked the screw that supports the artificial intervertebral disc. In early March, Plushenko will have a new operation.

He barely noticeable limp, but on painkillers goes fast corridor clinic. Just from the doctor's office. Where it became clear that during warm-up before the short program's single skating in Sochi, in front of the eyes of whole world Evgeni Plushenko unsuccessfully completes triple axel and his face distorted grimace in pain at that moment when in his spine broken screw. One of the four, which kept polymer - artificial intervertebral disc that was implanted athlete during last year's operation.

"This information just killed me today. I felt that something had happened, but did not feel it could come to this, that I could not walk, I could be paralyzed," - says Evgeni Plushenko.

This decision - to withdraw from the competition - it is not only important in his career, but in life. Because each next jump could be the last.

"I was afraid that when I land a jump will pop out the construction - the four screws and vertebral disc", - says Evgeni Plushenko.

"This one whole screw, it is broken. He did not move, he just broke, for now, nothing has departed" - said doctor Ilya Pekarski.

"See, screw was broked and moved. And fortunately for Evgeni that it stopped. If it was going on, it would have entered into the spinal cord. He could go from there with wheelchair. This could lead to his disability," - said the director of the medical center Igor Piatigorsky.

One step away from a spinal fracture. Postoperative pains in the back, Plushenko felt from last spring when he began preparations for the Olympics, and they never stopped. And now they are only intensified.

"Yes, I can walk, I can move, I can squat, sleep, lying - everything is fine, but I have exacerbated pains. And because of this need to do something", - says Evgeny Plushenko.

Olympic champion will pass a comprehensive examination of the entire musculoskeletal system. Doctors emphasize that maybe not only the broken super-durable screw cause pains, but they are maybe also a consequence of other injuries.

Whatever is the strategy for the forthcoming treatment, there is no doubt that this year, here in the medical center in the north of Tel Aviv, Evgeni Plushenko will come, more than once. One of the main reasons for the new skater injury doctors call his forced preparation before the Sochi Olympics, and this time doctors do not recommended him to go out on the ice too early.

To remove a broken screw, Plushenko need a second a complicated operation on his back in two years.

"In order to remove it, there is necessary to remove a part of the vertebra, and it adds, of course, the patient's pain and complexity of my work. Bone, which will be removed, I do not throw it, I will put it in place," - said Ilya Pekarski doctor.

Recovery time - at least six months. Therefore, already transferred Plushenko's tour to the fall is in jeopardy. However, skater says now - it's the last thing he cares about.

Evgeni Plushenko: "I chose this way - to prove that I'm the best, that my the country is best. But, of course, now I do not want anything, neither to skate, nor any other things to do. I want first to pass all medical surveys, and only then I will decide what to do."

Now only thanks to the fans who have been waiting for him, but did not saw his skating in Sochi in individual tournament.

Evgeni Plushenko: "People, thank you very much. Sincere bow, we will continue on."

But such will be this continuation? Doctors cautiously predict that if the recovery is successful, and the pain will disappear, only then the question of returning to the ice for Evgeni Plushenko will again be relevant. But now follows the operation, the 2nd of March.

Aw Plushy did a shout out to Mao. I thought about him when she was skating because I know that they are friends and that he admires her very much. It's great to see him supporting her.

I don't like hearing that he has to have surgery again, but I know it must be done. I hope it goes well and that he has a full recovery with minimal or no pain moving forward. I also hope that he'll be able to resume skating - exhibitions only please. Don't want him to re- injure himself by competing again.

To be honest, I am so worried about him that I think he should not do any jumps at all. Just enjoy the rest of his life with his family. This back situation sounds very serious.

I kind of agree. From what I understand he got back on the ice pretty quickly after his surgery last year, no doubt so that he could start training for Sochi. This time there won't be a Sochi to train for, so hopefully he'll follow the doctor's orders and allow himself the time recommended to heal before he even attempts to start skating again.

Cherub - Plushy's son is so cute. He must've gone back to St. Petersburg after he withdrew. Surely he didn't bring all his previous Olympic medals to Sochi. Lol.

I hope he can continue to skate after his surgery. It's sad that his body is letting him down. I highly doubt he was serious abut 2018, with his injuries and he'll be 35, seems unlikely. Better he retires for good now as a legend. He had two successful comebacks (2010 and Team Event 2014), hes' done it all. He has nothing to prove. He'll always be a legend. Nice to see him during the closing ceremonies.

It's always a joy to read this thread. :) Love the pic of Zhenya's son, the words Mao had about Evgeni (his support of her as well), and everybody's comments, especially coppertop1's post, ITA. :saint:

It'll be so sad when it's all over, but I know & suspect he will be mentioned in the future just as Michelle Kwan's name has been and will continue to be. :hat1:

I know you posted this a couple of years ago, but thanks for posting. I just started the book today, and find it to be a fascinating read. So interesting learning how he started skating and what he was thinking after his Olympic win in 2006. Thanks for translating to English.
