I know he is lauded for Lawrence of Arabia but it was never my favourite of his but I did love him in The Lion in Winter and My Favourite Year. An amazing actor - how he never won an Oscar is something that still stymies me.

RIP Peter O'Toole - they broke the mould when they made you!!

RIP to one of the greats. Oscar nominated for same role (Henry II) twice -- once for Becket, once for Lion in Winter.

We've been talking about O'Toole and his movies in the movies thread. And how he had to plans to come out of retirement and act in film once again. :(

He was so good looking that after his appearance in Lawrence of Arabia Noel Coward said to him: "If you were any prettier, it would have been Florence of Arabia"...

He's a legendary actor, but the only movie of his that I've seen is Caligula.

To hear the passing of one of my very favourite Actors is so...:( I remember curled up beside my Great Aunt and spending many a wekend afternoon watching his Movies. The mould was indeed shattered when he was made.

I'll have to pop in my Season 2 The Tudors DVD's and rewatch his wonderful portrayal of the Pope at the time of Anne Boleyn being Queen. That one scene alone of him addressing the faithful in St. Peter's Square completely and totally in Latin...You can't turn away. One of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen on a TV screen as part of a series.

Thank you Sir for so many wonderful memories. GodSpeed and Rest in Peace.

I loved him in everything. When I was in college his photo was taped to my closet door. One of my favorite performances (in which he was pretty mis-matched with Mariel Hemingway) was Creator. My favorite movies of his were My Favorite Year & Goodbye Mr Chips. His acting was perfection.

R.I.P, Sir. Loved Lion in Winter. Two of the best chewing up the scenery. My Favorite Year which may have been a little biographical. and of course, Lawrence.would be called I don't remember which chat show he was on when he remarked something to the effect of if he got into a trouble, he would be called an Irish actor. If he got an award or something like that, it was British actor.

    Indeed!

I mentioned this in the movie thread.
If you haven't seen his "young" Henry II, in "Becket", you should.

lol! It's mostly because I'm a fan of "old" movies--those prior to 1960. O'Toole became a big star during the 60's.

I actually hate when movies made in the 70's and 80's are shown on TCM. I don't consider these movies "old movie classics". But I guess that's due to age--MY age. ;)

I am right there with you, I don't think those movies belong on TCM either.
Nor do movies made in the 60's.
