Reading about these creative banners at the Cup of Russia just made my day!

The mysterious disappearance of this one just calls for speculation...
And anyone got a photo of the multiplying mushrooms?
Please kindly share your favorite banner photos, stories! Of course, I will never forget the "Heavenly Creature" one for Queen Yuna!

OMG that Javi banner cracked me up!

I love all the Tomas Verner banners, they travel around the world and I see them all at every competition he takes part. Nice to see the devotion of the fans. :)

I do get amazed at the amount of work that does go into some banners. Very creative. Love that Fernandez one. Thanks for posting.

  4. :D thanks :)

Tomas told me today that when he and his new coach came into the arena and saw all the banners, his new coach commented that: "oh, wow, so many banners, the people really must love you here!" I said that he ain't seen nothing yet. :shuffle: (I know, I'm bad. So is my Japanese friend. When we are both present at an event: it's insane. )

Also this morning when I wanted to go out for practice, there were 2 girls on the computer here on some Russian forum. I saw a picture of one my banners as they were scrolling, so I commented that it was mine. They got all excited, wanted to see it and take a picture with me and the banner.

I remember a huge banner for Joubert; it might have been in Japan but I'm not certain. It was very impressive and had obviously taken a huge amount of time and effort, but on it were emblazoned the words 'GO BRAIN!'. :biggrinbo

LMAO That's hysterical. Poor girls. They may not be the best spellers but they're the best fans. lol

I'm amazed that fans take banners for people who are not even skating at the event. I heard there were some Johnny ones there. Fans above and beyond.

My favorite was years ago, before the Internet even. Petrenko had just started skating with COI. One of his biggest fans wanted to make a special sign for him. She requested something along the lines of "I love you Viktor", in Russian. The sign maker um... spiced it up a bit until it read more like "I want you Viktor. Eat me now". Of course nobody clued fan in to what the sign actually said. She waved it overhead smiling like crazy any time Petrenko skated by.

I quite like the ones that use the skaters name to spell something. I can't remember exactly, but there was one for Alexander Abt that went something like:

    Awesome
    Brilliant
    Terrific

I used to make alternatives up in my mind like:

    Awful
    Bad
    Terrible

I just wanna know who made the "HUBBELLS HOT" banner at Cup of Russia.

So delicious... precisely because it's so wrong. :saint:

Well, there definitely was an "Alissa Czisney, will you marry me?" banner 2 years ago in Cleveland.

    Isn't Mishin into picking mushrooms?

Found his website with a picture of them. Scroll along to the end of the photos.

I am thinking the mushroom is related to chanflation, but really not sure.

ETA: some fair scoring related explanation here

Lol, there was a mention of a banner "I want to have a child with a Russian ice-dancer" in Khodynka last season

The mystery behind the mushrooms :

There's a commentator on NTV+, who is coincidently a technical caller, which makes the things quite uneasy, who, looking at the marks at some of the competition, said something in the lines of "The judges today have been eating magical mushrooms". FSO got excited, and mushrooms became a very popular internet mem.

Basically, now it's dedicated mostly to chanflation, yes.

The lady with the knitted Evan banner was in front of me at the Olympics. It's quite impressive. I'm pretty sure she said she made one for him too.

I was disappointed at the lack of banners at Skate Canada this year....it's always fun to look at the different ones.

The FSU banner made it to Kingston, but we were afraid it'd be taken down due to lack of any other banners... Indeed, it was a sad bannerless arena...

The lady with the knitted Evan banner is Mary... she is a very nice lady. She makes lots of impressive banners for Evan. She traveled down to Allen for the Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular and brought one of her Evan banners. It was really nice and pretty big. She also gave us (we met up with some other Evan fans) these Evan stickers to wear. I think the one she brought to the show though was the one she brings to every competition Evan is in.

Maybe it's not noteworthy, but mine for Carolina had its 15 minutes of fame at last Nationals when she skated with it :) I painted it in 2008, it already made some trips and I hope it will do some more in the future :)

Here are some random photos of its story

Personally I choose Free Fernandez as my all time favourite :D in addition to deedeelocks ones, of course ;)
