I will send you some postcards when you post your name.

And what does your screen name mean?

 I thought your screen name was Spazcataz, and I was wondering why everyone was spelling it wrong. Doh!

I hope you're not suffering so much pain now. It's great that your family are supportive and that they brought in your puppy to give you some cheer. :) Hopefully you'll be able to get some sleep as you're so tired, and please post anything you want if it will help even a tiny bit. Everyone here is thinking of you. (((Hugs for Spazactaz)))

Is a pain management specialist available to you?
    Ask about this.
Much can now be done to relieve suffering without "doping" you.

(((Spazactaz))) I am so sorry that you are going through this. There are no adequate words to express how sad I am, for your pain. I am sending hugs and prayers that each day is a day with less pain.

Adding my virtual hugs. I know you must be experiencing intense emotions, and the shock etc. for you & family - as well as your physical discomfort - is making it difficult to focus. I'm thinking about who you can get to both help you with all the practical questions and offer emotional support. Can the hospital refer a social worker/"point person" to help you and your family? To put it in FS terms, you need a coach or coaching team!

And perhaps others here will continue to have suggestions about online resources.

In the meantime, another JW performance.

My name is Jesse Smith. And yes in Canada.
My parents are about 2 hours away from me right now. They've been driving in every other day or so to see me which has been nice. My puppy is a yorkie. Her name is Porki. :)
My screen name doesn't really mean anything... someone suggested it to me well over 10 years ago and I just liked it. :p
The pain is even worse today... so excruciating I can't handle it. They do have several pain people working with me trying to get it sorted out but it just seems like absolutely everything they try does nothing. I'm on SO many meds it's crazy... I don't know why they seem to have no effect on me. :(

There's a fine line between keeping you lucid and keeping you pain free. Sometimes it takes a while to find the precise combination. Hopefully, the radiation therapy will begin to reduce some of the tumor swelling which should help with pain management. You might try some relaxation techniques to see if it will help you. Slow deep breaths when the pain is most intense. Your muscles tense against the pain which results in a cascade effect. It's not easy, but maybe if you try to focus on breathing through the pain it will help. Have your physicians discussed a morphine pump with you? This would allow you to keep your pain medication at an even level so you don't experience highs and lows. Addiction is not your biggest concern at this point. Distract yourself as much as possible. And Porki the Yorkie is too cute.

Is there somewhere your parents can stay, so that they don't have to travel? I wish I could reach through the computer and hug you. Would a psych consult help you to mentally manage the pain (emotional and physical)? You're such a young man, this is so unfair.

    That is just perfect. :)

Ugh - pain management can be so elusive so I hope they sort out your situation quickly. A friend of mine was in a very bad car accident that left her with extreme and persistent pain that didn't respond to meds. She now has this weird thing that I understand as sort of an implant that she activates to zap a little electrical current through her system that seems to help much more than the meds ever did. (That's my very lay person understanding but I guess the current interrupts the pain signals to the brain and provides relief that way.)

I guess it's something like this. From a quick search it seems like TENS is just being explored as a pain management tool for cancer patients so there is no standard protocol yet but maybe it's something you could ask about if meds aren't helping? In the meantime, we are all sending healing vibes your way.

(ETA: Here is a recent study on the efficacy of TENS for cancer patients that ultimately recommends it.)

    Yay Porki Yorkie!

Pain is this crazy thing. What works for one person may not work for another, and stress certainly doesn't help. :( Keep on the nurses and doctors to try new things, though. There has to be a combination that works.

Spaz is a dude. :) He's posted vids of himself skating - your combination spin here is GORGEOUS! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RMmBbMShcU

And this is a hopeful song Spaz skated to that maybe we all need right now: http://youtu.be/DFxBWcJQbcA

    Spaz, those videos are awesome!

I'm sorry you are suffering so badly. My prayers today are that the doctors find something that can manage your pain, and find it quickly. I hope Porki can come visit often - I know that whenever I'm feeling bad, holding and petting my little Maltese Zamboni helps a lot.

    Don't stop believing, my friend!

This is really bad news, Jesse. I am happy to recall that you got to London to see the Worlds. We didn't know that you were ill at that time.

I hope they are soon able to come up with the right pain meds to give you comfort. It is hard to be rational when overwhelmed by pain.
My good thoughts and wishes join those of the rest of the FSU family in wishing you freedom from fear and pain. ((Jesse))

Jesse: like kimkom said, I'm so glad that you posted here on FSU. Big, big hugs, my friend. I had a blast sitting with you in London at Worlds. It was great snarking about lots of the skaters with you! ;) Know that I'm thinking of you. Lots of positive vibes are being sent.

Jesse, does the address you provided accept flower deliveries? I wasn't sure because it said Box 2145, and in the US, most postal boxes would not accept flower deliveries.

Jesse, I hope you find some peace of mind and comfort, and relief from your pain. I cannot imagine what you are going through emotionally and physically. You must feel incredibly ripped off. I wish I had some wisdom to share about how to deal with that, but I don't. If you are able to find wisdom and courage within yourself, there are many on this board and in the world at large who would benefit if you would share it.

{{{{Jesse}}}} I told my daughter about you today. She's a few years older than you, but she remembers you skating at the Central Region Open in Ponoka a number of years ago. She sends her good wishes for you.

I hope the docs are able to come up with the right combination of meds to make your pain manageable. My heart goes out to you -- I can't begin to imagine how difficult this is for you, and your family, especially making that two-hour trek. Ask if there are any rooms available in the hospital for them to 'rent' -- when my husband had his heart surgery last December, the U of A hospital had a few rooms that weren't being used and were available for patients' families to rent. I'm guessing you're in Calgary, but I don't know what's available at the hospitals there.

I hope tomorrow is a better day...

I hope the pain consult comes through quickly. Is hospice an option in Canada? (They did a far better job addressing my dad's cancer pain than did the hospital.)

I'll join in the hope that tomorrow is better.
