Tweets late yesterday from both Maia and Alex announced that they have been invited by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to attend the Official State Dinner at the White House tonight to honor the visit of Japan's Prime Minister.

I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience, and I'm sure their parents are thrilled for them and very proud. I'm eager to see what Maia wears. Her clothes are always exquisite and tasteful.

Did Hillary text the invitation? :p

But, seriously -- great opportunity for the Shibs! :)

Maybe we can catch their entrance. CSPAN sometimes shows the State Dinners.

I wonder if Prime Minister Noda will try to talk them into skating for Japan in the team event at Sochi? :)

I wonder how Chris and Cathy Reed feel about this?

The Reeds are not American citizens of Japanese heritage.
There is no slight to them

Actually, I think they are. Their mom is from Japan, but their father is American. (Although I don't know if Cathy & Chris had to give up their U.S. citizenship to skate in the Olympics in Vancouver.)

Anyway, back to the topic: go Maia and Alex!!!

Cathy did prior to Vancouver as she turned 22 in 2009, but Chris relinquished his last year

Wow, how exciting for them. Who is the FS fan that put out the invite?

My guess is Mrs. Clinton. We know she enjoyed Yuna skate at the olympics. They exchanged some letters that were made public. Also Michelle and Evan are employed by Secretary of State.:rollin:

This is a very impressive honor.

My sister-in-law, who works for the State Department thinks that an invitation to such an important event is a high profile "nod" that they have made a very positive impression at various levels, not just for their athletic talents but off-ice qualities as well. Someday, they could be well suited to follow in the footsteps of Michelle and Evan as ambassadors for the sport. The more quality skating ambassadors the better in my opinion!

Maia is lovely. Always so elegantly turned out. Beyond Hillary Clinton and the State department, Maia captured the notice of Teen Vogue as well.

I'm sure they are doing a fine job representing the sport. Hoping to see pictures! :)

I know this is nit-picky, but this is a dinner by the Department of State. It is not an official State Dinner, as those are hosted by heads of state, ie, the President of the United States.

It's an amazing honor for the Shibs nevertheless.

Invite for the Shiblings is part of the TOMODACHI Initiative:

    From Sec. Clinton's comments

"That’s why we are working to create opportunities for the young people in both of our countries. Our shared goal is to promote a tomodachi or friendship generation of young people who will be our future leaders. That’s why we have created a private-public partnership, the TOMODACHI Initiative, to bring young people from both countries together. We are looking forward to receiving hundreds of young Japanese students and sending hundreds of young American students, through student exchanges, sports programs, and entrepreneurial programs."

I wouldn't be surprised if Shibs got overtaken by at least one other US team by Sochi so it might be in their best interest.

I'd be surprised if the US doesn't have 3 dance entries to Sochi. Not sure what their advantage would be in Japan. (Still weird to think of dance as the strongest of the US disciplines by a lot. How times have changed.)

Hmm, I rarely say that about all those diaries etc. - but this was a thorougly enjoyable, amusing and interesting read. They seem to have a great sense of humour.
