This has been informed in the Finnish Skating News -thread, but sure, deserves its own thread, too.

Here is the video of a tv-program, where her retirement was announced today

Laura can be seen/heard in sections:
1:20 - 7:00 (interviewed at her parents' home, with her father)
11:40 - 16:15 (interviewed at her training hall, with her coach Virpi Horttana, both of them getting little teary eyed...)
19:45 - 23:20 (Laura on ice in the training hall, also interviewed)

Laura is and will always be one of my sentimental favorites
her jump arsenals may not be that high but her artistry, skating skills and presentation she has impressed me the most.

you will be missed beautiful Laura :(:(:(

Well, she came pretty close in the Olympics, with five triples (3T-3T, triple lutz, and two triple loops, just doubling the salchow) with a score of 126+. I'm sorry to see her go.

i never was a big fan of her to be honest, but looking back, 2007, 2008, how bright finnish ladies skating future seemed to be with poykio still on the line, korpi and especially laura and jenni vähamaa in coming.

so sad to summarize now, what a disappointing ending for poykio, vähämaa history long ago, korpi never manages to totally rock a main competition with two great skates and now lepistö retiring.

wish her the best for the future and remember her tears in the press confernce hence makes me still sad.

I'm sorry that injury forced the decision.
A shame that she couldn't end her career on her own terms.
The very best to Laura in the future.

What a shame for Laura and the fans. I'm glad she will always be a European Champion and World medalist, but as skatesindreams said, it's a shame she couldn't retire on her own terms. :(

This is incredibly sad news. I am devestated for the girl and for the sport, to lose an amazing talent in such a forced manner. Her time as a senior was actually quite brief, but so effective and her Olympic skate is one of my all time favourites. It is genuinely depressing to think she won't be at a competetive event again. One of the all time best Europeans.

To be let down by your own body, especially when she seemed to everything right, developing the harder jumps as she matured, pushing her self in increments....

:respec: to the talent, sad for her, her coach, her family and fans.

I'll add to the :wuzrobbed:. I was actually just thinking the other day how I missed having her in the mix. She's been one of my favorite skaters to watch for the past few years, no matter which jumps she was landing. The fact that she was always tiffed from head to toe didn't hurt. Her "Imagined Oceans" SP is one of my favorite programs from anyone post-2006. Off to watch vid now.:slinkaway

I'm sorry, too, but at least she has the satisfaction of knowing she set records for Finland in Ladies' Singles: first Finn to win Europeans (and only Finn to win bronze, silver, and gold), first Finn to medal at Worlds, and highest finish by a Finn at the Olympics.

    So sad :(

she was such a light, airy, and beautiful skater. Clean lines, clean jumps, spins and engaging presentation.

But she can be v. proud about the european title, world bronze medal and wonderful performances at Olympics.

I will miss her. Hope that Juulia Turkilla or some other Finnish lady can rise to the challenge and carry on what's now a tradition in Finnish figure skating.

It's always sad to see another skater retiring because of the injuries, and esp. so if they come from a smaller nation.

    ((((((((Finnish fans))))))))))
    Good luck to Laura.

I agree. I felt with Laura, the best was definitely yet to come. In some ways she reminds me a bit of Arakawa - same good basics, good skills and that (potentially) slightly more sophisticated and refined style that takes time to develop (as it should) I'll hazard a guess that Laura was going to be one of those ladies that got better as she got older and into her 20's.

I sensed she was more of a slow burner than some of the wonderbabies ladies skating so often produces. Her delivery was quieter and and her strengths more sutble in comparison to many, but I felt she added to her arsenal every year, be it artistically or technically. She was "growing" and becoming more confident in her own skating skin as it were. I guess now we'll never know how far she could have gone (in skating terms) but her achievements were still very impressive!

Feeling very sad about Laura ending her eligible skating career, but apparently that was the only solution under the circumstances.

Anyway, Laura has every reason to feel very proud about her career, a bronze medal at Worlds ( plus gold, silver and bronze at Europeans) is the greatest achievement that any of the Finnish ladies has achieved. And it does not look like that those records will be broken, at least not in near future.

That was a truly sublime performance, and one of the Olympic moments for me.
