Next season will be Latin themes for the OD.

Please pick what you are most looking forward to about it.

Doubt we'll see many slutty dresses like we have in the past. The skaters have been warned that they need to follow the costume rules.

Can you imagine if Diva Nora had one  Figure skating's straight male demographic would skyrocket.

The emergence of some creative bitchfaces!
Unfortunately, unlike the Torino lineup hardly any of the top teams are over 25....I miss that we no longer see dramatic divas in ice dance anymore :fragile:

Heh... I'm with you there. I remember watching the Latin OD from 2000 (which they did as a response to the popularity of Ricky Martin/Latin Pop music at the time) with my ex-bf, who has been playing Latin percussion since the age of 5 (he's 41). He basically ripped apart just about every dance team's music. I must say that the music from the 2006 OD's was a huge improvement, because on the whole it was more authentic and less "pop".

Is Elena going to turn 18 in time? I'm really concerned.
Anyway, the answer is, DEFINETELY what is La Khok going to wear..I bet she's already designing the "dress"

    Nope, she'll still be 17 ( born April 25, 1994). Somehow I doubt that'll be a problem though.

When did the ISU last chose Latin dances for the OD theme? It seems as if it's been a while.

Lol, not quite--I'm the opposite. I HATE rinky-dink Blackpool Latin music, which might have authentic tempos but is painful to listen to (we mock the truly HORRIBLE stuff that's used for test dances in skating like Silver Samba--let's party like it's 1959! Worst. Samba. EVER.) And I have limited tolerance for "authenic" as in street Latin music (which is meant for dances like Cuban son or salsa anyway.) Doesn't appeal at all. Increasingly compmetitive Latin is going to modern Latino/Spanish-language pop or American pop, most of which can be adjusted to be the right mpm for competition and is less grating. It's hard to feel the music when you'd rather plug your ears.

And no matter what they use for music, skating just doesn't lend itself to LOOKING like Latin--the feet are totally opposite (Latin involves heeled shoes for men and women because all your weight's on the ball), the defining leg line is STRAIGHT with knee locked, there's lots of sharp stops and starts and turns, and except for Paso and Samba, the dances don't travel. So it never ends up looking like Latin to me at all.

My choice is not on the list:

I am most looking forward to the end of the season when I will not have to see any Latin SD's for a while.

There is nothing I'm looking forward to-well, maybe Lakhok's dress a little bit, but other than that, nothing.

ITA and let's not forget all the hip action that the ice dancers can only do when they are in pose.

I'm afraid I agree with Doris here. While I would enjoy seeing a real rumba on the ice, the compulsory is awful and has little feel for anything Latin. I have never been a fan of the cha cha or samba on the ice either even though I enjoy both ballroom and street Latin dancing.

I wonder how the skaters feel about these dances.

Exactly. If they wanted an OSP or OD based on Rumba again, that would be OK with me. And salsa doesn't work badly. OTOH, this seems like an opportunity to see 30 odd repeats of Gorshkova & Butikov's dreadful 2011 FD. Samba and chacha just don't work well on ice. Period.

A really outstanding team or two may rise above this mess and produce a watchable program, but they would be teams that I could enjoy watching if they danced to the Alphabet Song coupled with Happy Birthday and Barney songs.

They have received the same warning every year since the rules have been made available on the internet. Fortunately they never pay heed. What are they supposed to wear for a latin dance - a prom dress? :shuffle:

Hip action is generated from foot and knee action, so what ice dancers do is faking it anyway. They can't move the foot the way you would in a shoe, what with, you know, the solid piece of steel nailed to the sole of the boot!
