Drew Meekins and Sarah Brannen just tweeted that Brian Joubert and Jeremy Abbott will be working with Flamenco expert Antonio Najarro in the forthcoming season. This is getting more and more interesting all the time. I'll see if I can get the site to cooperate in order to get the content translated.

However, it just says that he will be working with both skaters and pretty much nothing more.

The important paragraph starts with " Estais siempre de gira? or Are you always on tour?

He talks about touring in France and Turkey. The significant set of sentences follow, loosely translated as, I have to go alone to Paris to choreograph for Brian Joubert, world figure skating champion and then also travel to the US to work with Jeremy Abbott another world champion.

I would love it if both skaters were invited to SA and we could compare how either skater interprets this genre.

since when is Abbott a world champion? or did I miss something? :p

anyway, Brian and flamenco don't really seem to correspond for me... he's just not the flamenco type. Although it means he's trying new, he wants to develop and that's good for him. I hope he'll surprise me.

I have to say that I can't imagine either of them doing flamenco, but you never know. Is Navarro the same guy who worked with Lambiel? That program was insanely good.

I can definitely picture the flamenco style working with Abbott's dancer qualities and keen ability to interpret music, but considering Joubert is the antithesis skater to Abbott and Lambiel, I have huge doubts of his ability to interpret this style of music convincingly. Who knows though . . . maybe he'll surprise us all? Nevertheless, the new 2010-2011 programs will be fun to see and I'll be cheering both Jeremy and Brian on to do great and rebound from the disappointments of their Olympic appearances. :cheer2::cheer2:

My first thought was : "OMG, I hope they are not dating together !"
If it's just to do flamenco for the next choreography, it's OK.
I'm sure it will be perfect for Jeremy, because he is musical and beautiful.
I'm more than pessimistic about Joubert. LOL

Wow, I'm the complete opposite to you guys. I'm a huge HUGE Abbott fan, but I don't see him pulling off a flamenco He's too innocent-looking to make it really effective. Brian, I think, can do wonders with it. He's proven he can handle challenging choreography when he wants to, and give him a program where he can play to the audience, you've got a winner.

    PML
My first thought was that they are doing the flamenco together.

My second thought was that Abbott's would probably the most depressing flamenco in history, at least I have never heard about flamenco dancers looking as if they have just buried their favorite granny and going to burst into tears any second.

And my third thought was "Joubert? Flamenco??? PML!!!"

Oh, those are wonderful news on so many levels!

He didn't literally say "world champion" - more like world-level champion, which is not entirely out of line since Abbott won the GPF.

I'm not sure the fact that they are working with Antonio Najarro automatically means that they are doing Flamenco.

Well, Antonio Narraro is the choreographer of the famous "Poeta" of Stephane Lambiel, and he himself is a flamenco dancer, but as far as I know, he worked with Lambiel for his tango program, too. I loved the results of their collaboration. I also loooved his works also with A&P and P&B for their ODs.

I can see Abott in Flamenco(anyway something latin) with his musicality, but Joubert? I'm surprised by his choice but at least he tries to do something new. It's already good!

 I was just coming back to correct myself.. I knew some Canadian ice dancers had worked with him..but I think it was for styling, not complete choreography..and now I think it was C/P. ( I need my coffee )
However Najarro is a tango specialist as well, so...?

Right, he was choreographer of Tango, which was performed by Stéphane at the beginning of this season. And also he choreographed with Lambiel and Brunner (if I'm not mistaken Salomé was also involved) SP of season 2007/08, "Carne Cruda".

Agree with those who wrote that they actually can't see Abbott in this "style". All Najarro's works I saw looked very passionate and a bit aggressive even. Not sure Abbott can show this. But... we'll see.

P.S. He is Najarro, not Navarro or Narraro. :)

Actually I find great difficulties imagining Joubert or even Abbott skating to Flamenco music...

Flamenco is not a word I ever expected to see in a sentence with Jeremy Abbott's name. Should be interesting, though. Maybe it will make him more aggressive.

It's not what I would pick for Jeremy or Brian, but I like seeing them try something different. Hopefully it will work.

Well, it will be Brian's SP. Brian has a been a tiny bit more adventurous with his SP. It is about time he challenges himself choreographically.

Maybe we will finally see the true Joubert!:HA!:
    Or maybe not.
Anyway, I hope that he can get good choreo.

Abbot is a musical guy. I would love to see him doing ice dance (with Massimo...)

I think Joubert would likely have a Flemenco costume and open his short program with some flamenco like move and also possibly end the routine with a flamenco like move. Obviously there is no Flamenco way to do a triple lutz or a quad triple or a flamenco way to a mohawk turn but maybe in costume and attitude he could do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe he'll do a more subdued style of flamenco, like the Gallecia Flameco Kimmie Meisner used a few years ago. And, before anyone starts :angryfire, I'm only referring to the music. Although I liked the interpretation, too

Really ? I'm a huge ABbott fan, and I loved the drama in his Tango LP in 2009 and the passion in his Waltz LP in 2008.
I think that passion + drama can do a perfect Flamenco.
Anyway, it depends so much on the music and the choreography. Let's wait and see ;)

At least, it's better taste than Joubert. :p

I agree with Mr Fan. I think Brian would be great with flamenco! He's all about the sexy macho posturing. I see it less with Jeremy but he's a good artist I think he could pull it off too. These could turn out to be great programs.
