Fantastic news. I'm hoping this means better choreography and better costumes too.

ETA: Ha, I already see so many negative comments on Twitter because of this. Hard for many Japanese to accept Orser as a good guy after "demonizing" him for so many years. Well, when he gives them their first Olympic gold in figure skating, they'll make him honorary citizen of Tokyo. :p

 Hasn't he always been training in Japan? This sounds like a huge change. He and Fernandez are going to have a ball with those quads.

He'll still go to school in Sendai, so I hope he won't wear himself out traveling back and forth to Toronto.

I don't get what you mean at all. And we already have Shizuka's OGM in figure skating.

I am guessing he means many Japanese fans don't like him because he helped Kim win the gold over Asada in 2010.

Men's figure skating. Sorry, the "men" was omitted.

And I guess you must have missed all the Yuna/Orser bashing. Consider yourself lucky. ;)

I bet you Brian made sure a proper financial contract was drawn up before accepting Yuzuru!

There are 126 million Japanese. By many, how "many" do you mean? Basing your statement on a few trolls on Twitter doesn't really cut it, in my opinion. :p

That only means that you might want to reconsider who you follow on Twitter.

Only negative comments about Orser on my Timeline today are about Fernandez's suspenders. ;)

I wouldn't call Japanese figure skating fans voicing their opinions on Twitter trolls. I think they are all entitled to their opinion. I was just looking at the tweets that popped up right after the announcement was made this morning.

I'm very happy with those I follow on Twitter, so I do not want to reconsider, at all. :) And there weren't that many I follow who commented about the coaching change. The tweets I read were based on a search. Lots of opinions - both positive and negative to the news.

If they are harbouring grudges against the former coach of a skater they don't like then yes they are. And probably mentally unbalanced too. :scream:

Prince Ice World (PIW) shows just kicked off in Japan,
and Daisuke and Kanako skated new exhibition programs.

To have an idea, Daisuke's new exhibition program (Snoop Dogg) looks like this
(I guess the slo-motion is intentionally done to show his movements well):

Oh, and his new hair-do! :)

^Thanks for the clip, loved it!

Kenji did the choreography for this exhibition quite a departure from the Crisis.

Thanks! Are there enough videos or photos to start a separate thread in GSD for the Prince Ice World shows? I Googled and found these photos from the April 27 PIW show in Kanagawa: http://nipponnews.photoshelter.com/gallery/Prince-Ice-World-2012/G0000J4GwP9ZFX84/C0000IMw9xQyr3XQ

Miki Ando, Patrick Chan, Carolina Kostner, and Stéphane Lambiel are the listed guest skaters for Dreams on Ice, Japan's annual national skating exhibition show, June 15-17, 2012: http://www.onice.jp/DOI12/guests.html
(I figure a separate thread can be started for this show as the time draws nearer.)

I am not sure. PIW allows the audience to take photos at the end,
so quite a number of photos have been tweeted.
But since they are personal photos taken individually,
you need to ask the person to see if it is OK to post each time...

    I agree with that.

What a great cast! It looks like it'll be a lot of fun. I'm so happy the Shibs are going to be there--knowing them we'll get a lot of hilarious tweets and photos!

I had a good laugh seeing Jeremy and Javier side-by-side in their suspenders on the cast page.

Is it just me or is Suzuki not as popular as the other Japanese skaters? I don't see her featuring in a lot of ice shows at all compared to Asada, Ando or even Murakami, even though she medalled at Worlds and won the WTT for the ladies.

Suzuki has been performing at Price Ice World since April 28th, and May 13th is her last show. It's just that she was not picked up in TV news. She will be in the US to make new programs for next season later this month. She is scheduled to perform at Dreams on Ice in mid June. Although there is no announcement yet, it's likely that she will be in Arakawa's Friends on Ice. I remember she was in Fantasies on Ice last year.

I don't know if she's really not as popular as Asada, Ando or Murakami among Japanese skating fans. Japanese major media organizations still mostly ignore her even after she won a World Bronze as if they are determined. She is more appreciated overseas than in Japan.

The poll was closed March 28, before the Worlds.

Yahoo! Japan is one of the media organizations determined to ignore Suzuki. It has Asada, Ando, Takahashi, Kozuka, Murakami, and Hanyu's page respectively in the news section, buy not Suzuki's even after she won Bronze.

Akiko is probably popular in Japan but from what I hear Mao, Miki, and Daisuke are like superstars there, and probably now Kanako and Yuzuru as well, so idk if it's that big of a deal, at least for the first three, they've been at the top of the sport for a long time, which isn't true for Akiko.

Yes. She's been around for so long, she's beloved in Japan, and she's pretty and sweet. All good for advertisements.

I remember her saying somewhere (don't have a link) that she actually didn't mind, and preferred not being as popular as Mao and Miki.

    Do you mean this article?

Ando has been a popular subject for Japanese tabloids especially for her relationship with men (e.g. Morozov), and Asada seems to have little privacy either. I don't think Suzuki envies them at least in that aspect.

    More Akiko Suzuki news...
Her latest blog, titled "Big Surprise," mentions a reception last week held in her honor by her co-workers (what kind of company does she work at?) with a surprise guest appearance: http://ameblo.jp/suzuki-akko/entry-11244954421.html
