    Japanese article
    http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/news/20120523-OYT1T00915.htm?from=tw

    >>
JSF held a board meeting on 23th and agreed to introduce a new annual Pro-Am figure skating competition, the Medal Winners Open. Men's and Ladies' medalists of past major international comps will be invited regardless of their eligibility. 6 competitors for each. There will be no Dance or Pairs event.

This is an ISU sanctioned event, and will be held on Oct. 5th in Saitama, Japan. The competition will have emphasis on the artistic side of the skating.
    >>

I think this will replace Japan Open.

I'm interested to see what the last sentence implies. Will they modify CoP, or use 6.0

I think it just means that hard jumps will be de-emphasized.

The Japan Open is listed for October 6, 2012 in Saitama, so it apparently is being held in conjunction with this new pro-am - see the 2012-13 ISU Calendar thread: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/showthread.php?t=83653

Thanks for starting a new thread with the article link.

Oh wow, I missed that. Thanks, Sylvia. :)

I'm not sure even Japanese fans can fill the arena for both events.

This article is more specific on the event format.
    http://mainichi.jp/sports/news/20120524k0000m050001000c.html

According to this article, the skaters will be skating free programs only, the jumps are excluded from the scoring, show lighting and vocals are permitted, and the pros will be consist of relatively newly retired skaters.

This seems to be more like a show than a competition.

Sounds good but if the purpose is to promote the artistic side of skating, then it is disappointing that pairs and dance are excluded.

Well, it's Japan where singles disciplines are very popular and there are LOTS of top skaters for 'em.

    Kulik! Yagudin! Very good news.:):):)

I hope TV Tokyo will televise ALL performances in this event...

Anyway, this event looks to be greater than previously thought.

How will the programs be scored? I guess it is similar to (if not the same) as artistic free skating in adult competitions (PCS only).

I've been transferring tapes to DVD and felt a little sad seeing the ABC fluff/cheesefests circa 2002-2004 knowing they could never be supported in the US today. But glad to get (extra) confirmation there's still a market in Japan! :)

"The winners of the Medal Winners Open" "A medalist of the Medal Winners Open"... yeah, it is more confusing than the four continentals.

Tickets will be on sale generally from June 30th, but we can participate in drawing of tickets now till June 14th. The result will be announced on June 15th.
It is accepted on the internet only. If you understand in Japanese, anyone can participate in it.

Candeloro performed at the Cleveland Skating Club's show in early May.

I would imagine she's been asked. Last month she competed in the ISU Adult FS competition in Oberstdorf for the second year, this time in a Masters Artistic event (PCS judging only) - link to the thread in GSD with her video: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/showthread.php?t=83794

Laura Lepisto posted to Facebook that she's been invited. I just haven't yet figured out how to quote or link from an iPad, or if this is possible.

    ETA: (from my computer):

I'm so excited to say that I will participate the Medal Winners Open, a totally new kind of show program competition which is held next October in Tokyo! How I've missed Japan!! ♥

I can imagine Ito, Arakawa and Asada doing this. It would be great to also have Yu-Na Kim. The good news about no Dance and Pairs is that there should be lots of room (time) to include many singles skaters.

This almost sounds like Scott Hamilton & Speedy Cinquanta's idea last year for "The ICE" Pro-Am, i.e., invite only past Oly and World medalists, except that they had suggested a time-limit to when entires had won their last medals (10 years, I think).

If you view the two events plus the following carnival on ice as a GP without pairs and ice-dance I think it's pretty easy to fill. Look at that cast. Ilia, Jeff, Irina and Alexei. I'm hoping for some other big names too, you know, the newly-retired generation has some very-very good performers.
