Ross was missing handstands galore in that bar routine, unless it was a really bad camera angle.

Glad to see Jupp win AA, I loved her at American Cup. I agree about having the talent on bars, with those beautiful lines and so nice to see someone pay attention to choreography on floor.

Really disappointing to see Ross isn't keeping up - I fully expected her to pull a Bridget Sloan and win the AA at Worlds this year, but I should know how injuries can quickly derail a career in this sport.

Well, Bridget would always look out of shape until Worlds, and then somehow deliver so maybe Kyla will do the same.

Biles is great but I really hoped to see an American gymnast who can deliver on bars as well. She is decent, but it would be really nice to see a bars prodigy who isn't a specialist. There isn't really a US bars specialist, Ross is just "nice" on bars.

Biles has some so far on bars in two years it's scary. With the small changes on bars connection value in the new code most gymnasts' D scores have gone down this year and I think Biles could make event finals at worlds with that routine. And her routine has a solid base to build from with a little tweaking (like working right out of her Shaposh, or replacing her C low to high with something with a higher rating) she could be a medal contender on that event in two years.

Biles' power is something and it's surprising how agile she can be considering her physique but I dunno whether I really like her gymnastics overall. I think Kyla will look better by Nationals although her floor is crap whether it's watered down or not. I cannot believe she hasn't gotten a new FX after last season. Is she pro or hoping to go NCAA? LOVED Bailie Key who absolutely dominated the junior event at Jesolo. Won the AA by two points and won 2 EF golds with bronze on bars. She has soooo much potential. LOVE her style; I hope she stays healthy and Kim Zmeskal is doing a fabulous job with her.

Great for Jupp to win Nationals, although I haven't watched it yet. Love her beam and floor. She really does have so much potential but I hope she can upgrade her vault. I agree her bars has possibilities to improve a lot. Also congrats to Max Whitlock who won the mens title.

Biles is great on vault, but the rest of her gymnastics is pretty fugly imo.

I hope the Russians (or some upstart from any country) get it together and win Worlds. If the choice is between Biles and Ross, I don't think I'll give a damn about who the World AA champ is this year.

Ohashi is a much bigger threat for the AA title this year than Ross (and for now probably more favored than Biles atleast slightly) so I dont know how it would ever come down to being between Biles and Ross alone, regardless what the other top countries show up with. It would be very surprising if Ross is an AAer for the U.S at Worlds a this point.

What is Ohashi vaulting these days, a 1.5 or a 2 Yurchenko?

Ohashi did a DTY at American Cup I think.

ohashi did a double, it was better than what i expected from her, I think she will improve her double by the end of the worlds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cq2LH5JW-Bo - Mustafina on beam. Some lovely elements but she'd never get away with pausing so long before the dismount. Still it's funny many other gymnasts and you'd be seriously worried about their condition. But with Mustafina you just know when Euros and Worlds come she is going to be in better condition.

MLT's two students are looking seriously underwhelming. Lexie Priessman's amanar isn't scoring any higher than a DTY. I honestly don't think she has a future.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnsmQI2YHw8 - Larissa Iordache on beam. Some very difficult elements. Rather messy and the rhythm is off. I think she can continue or even up that difficulty but she needs to work on being more tidy. And learn to slow down a bit. Ponor and other Romanians were also fast beam workers BUT they also knew when to slow things down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L433LtMgGY - Zeng Siqi is stunning. Really hope to see her at worlds. One worry with her is endurance.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVH0Xfl356g&list=PLJBt-Bl-D7na3LS6U-ytanN3CRCnTeCGC - Routines Germany-Romania-USA tri meet.

    Oh and Livchikova injured? :(

I was wondering what happened to Preissman. I looked at her scores from the tri-meet and they are seriously underwhelming. The only decent score came on vault and as you said, it isn't a great score considering it is an Amanar. She was last place out of all the Americans in the AA. Her bars and beam scored in the 13s and I am not sure if she even fell. Her E scores were both 7.8 which means if she did fall she was looking at around a 8.8 without a fall and that seems high looking at other scores so I am guessing she is just not looking good. Not sure what happened. Maybe she is just not peaking right now or maybe injuries and/or growth spurts are getting the best of her?

On the other hand, Brenna Dowell is looking fantastic! Her tumbling on FX is huge, and I especially love her front handspring + piked double front combination.

Biles is going to be the best black gymnast ever, overtaking Douglas and Dawes. She is so talented. She is definitely the 2nd favorite for the World AA this year behind only Ohashi, but a close 2nd. I think if Biles hits all her routines and Ohashi has a fall Biles can win.

Mary Lee Tracy doesn't have the best record. I imagine both gymnasts have been over-conditioned sadly. Priessman is really going to struggle since for the US at least having an amanar isn't the be all and end all. Any other team and an Amanar that scores above a DTY would get you a spot on the team. None of her other events are special either. If she had good bars she may be a contender.

Ohashi may not have an amanar but right now she looks to be one of the worlds best AAer and that beam difficulty makes her special. Kyla Ross is an ok AAer but falls behind Biles but she does have the best UB right now (if Douglas doesn't go back to training). She needs to decide to be an AAer and thus that floor difficulty in particular needs to go up or she should focus on Beam and UB. If the US requires anything it is decent bar workers. The amanar vaulters tend to also have good floors and have the difficulty on beam at least. And most look like they can produce a 14.5+ score on bars. I'd like to see Ohashi clean her bars up too.

Hard to see where someone like Mckayla Maroney would fit. Biles can do just as good an amanar and could potentially go one better and update from a Lopez to a Mustafina and ultimately a Cheng and she has a good floor and even can score okay on beam and bars. I'm not sure where Weiber would fit either. Can she go back to being a strong AAer? And is she good enough to specialise when Bars are her weakest event? Raisman I imagine could still throw out a strong floor but I don't see her coming back for some reason.

Of the juniors Baille Key looks like she could a throw a real decent UB set which could make her a great specialist (she could also do floor and beam) or even an AAer if she upgrades her vault.

For now I'm picking Ross, Biles, Ohashi and someone else for Worlds. And Biles and Ohashi look strong for 2014 worlds too. But so much can change in gymnastics so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Euros is looking particularly weak at the moment. I think Jupp or Meneghini could easily make the top five and potentially even medal if Iordache, Mustafina or Grishina fall.

I think Ebee Price will have a strong chance at the World Team. She appears to be back training fully after her injury. It will also be interesting to see how Maddie Desch and Sarah Finnegan look come Nationals.

I can only really see Ebee making it as an AA'er though, if she has a 2nd vault it will be a lot more interesting. I think that between Ross, Ohashi, and Biles, the events that could be filled will be by a VT/FX specialist (since only 3 gymnasts on each event in prelims at this Worlds). I think that one of Ross/Ohashi will be the UB/BB specialist and maybe someone like McKayla Maroney could get the last spot (and that would give the US two vault medals, honestly 1st and 2nd. I also think both Ohashi and Biles could make the FX final this year, and there really isn't a big standout there this year for a specialist position).

    My early guess:

    Ross - AA
    Ohashi - UB/BB/FX
    Biles - AA
    Maroney - VT

A lot is going to depend on where certain gymnasts (like Price, Finnegan, Li) stand with injuries I think. Lexie Priessman looks very very rough, wow. Didn't think MLT would strike this soon, she was jr National Champ less than a year ago.. We really have a ghastly looking team in a lot of ways, Kyla looks like Mosteponova compared to some of them. :shuffle: I also really like Bailey Key's gymnastics.

Either Biles or Ohashi would have to fall off ALOT IMO to not be the two U.S AAers at Worlds, or Ross improve alot from where she is now. I dont see anyway Ohashi is sat out of vault and make ineligible for the AA just so Maroney can compete on vault, especialy when they have Biles who is going to win the vault gold for the U.S anyway if Maroney isnt there. In the event Ross and Maroney both made the team (frankly I highly doubt Maroney making this years team all things considered) they would just have Ross do bars and beam, and Maroney vault and floor then, with Ohashi and Biles both doing the AA.

I don't think Ohashi will be one of the top two AA at Nationals, her vault is weak and her bar routine is a mess right now. Ross just won this past meet with lots to improve on beam, a possible vault upgrade and a floor routine that broke 14 with a good .6 obvious deductions and a possible upgraded tumbling pass. Only 3 go on each event, between Biles, Ohashi, and Ross you could pretty much cover those so there would be room for Maroney or a gymnast with one really strong event. The US has never gone 1-2 on vault and at this point they should be, so why not?

Either way I think Ohashi's vault will hold her back, and Simone has good scoring potential across all four. Sticking with that team, and I don't think Jordyn Wieber can be counted out yet either.

The one huge thing in America's favour this year and in the future is they look really good compared to every other country. Just as they dominated in 2011 and 2012.

I don't see Maroney factoring in this year. I don't know if she is going to fight hard enough and risk further injury to come back for an individual worlds and only compete vault. If I were her, I would take it easy and think about coming back next year for a full worlds and then try to begin making my case for Rio.

I also don't see Ohashi as being a top AAer. I think she has the potential but her vault is weak. I didn't know her bars was a mess, I thought it was usually nice. Maybe her beam D score will be enough to make up for other problem areas.

 Have to agree at this point. It would be a nice change if clean crisp gymnasts were chosen over those rough gymnasts with high D-scores. I do have hope that Ohashi can clean up a lot!

That said, if you're going to be rough in favour of high D-Scores at least do a Skinner on it and do CRAZY sh*t!

    Ohashi, Ross, Biles, Skinner

Skinner has a Cheng (worth more than an Amanar now) and DTY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=43KpvZsoOzw

And then she has that INSANE FX with double double layout, double double tuck, front double arabian, 1.5 into 2.5 and the chance to have the double double layout named after her!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZn_Lrr2xbE

Judge by how open Iordache's tuck was in Doha, I wonder is she practicing the same skill!

Anyway the above team would leave:
    AA: Biles/Ross (not Ohashi :scream:)
    Bars: Ross/Ohashi
    Beam: Ross/Ohashi
    Vault: Skinner/Biles
    FX: Skinner/Biles or Ohashi

That could return a lot of medals. I'd like Vega to fit in somewhere and you have to feel sorry for Price and Finnegan who had about 3 months at the top of the sport and already look like outcasts.

if Ohashi scores enough on beam and floor to keep winning events and posting huge AA totals I dont think it will matter much to Marta or the selection commitee if her vault and bars arent great, they are plausible enough and that is all that matters. Her beam alone can make up more than a fall on the other favorites if she hits it perfectly. Anyway the AA today is not to be great on 4 events, nobody is anymore.

This would definitely be the ideal team, but Skinner isn't even on the National team. :( I don't think she will be doing elite this year, thus she's ineligible for Worlds. A shame. Swap Maroney for Skinner and I'm in. :D At this point if there is not an AMAZING specialist, we may as well just send Biles/Ross/Ohashi and have them duke it out on all 4 in prelims for the finals spots. More of the US AA gymnasts should have an easy second vault at this point, I think Kyla Ross could win a medal on vault this year if she just had a "layout" Podkopayeva with her beautiful DTY.

According to Valentina Rodionenko, Ksenia Afanseyva will perform an amanar at the European championships and she will perform AA. This would mean either Aliya or Grishina will not do AA at the Europeans. I am not sure how I feel about this, but hopefully her amanar is stable.

According UEG rules, all 4 women can compete AA if they chose to, so according to the interview Grishina, Mustafina and Afanasyeva will all compete AA and Pasenka will do Vault and UB.

So the best two will qualify for the finals.
