I had to read the headline three times before it got through. Honestly, I never expected this -- and after 40 years! I'm not a fan of either, but I thought their close marriage was one of the few things they had going for them. (Of course, I said the same about the Edwardses. So much for my powers of discernment.) It's a pity.

That's eye-catching. Funny. Some public couples (or even friends) separate or divorce and I say, "Oh, well, lots of people do, I suppose." Then you get a couple like this and I'm like, "Really? The Gores? I'm surprised." (Bill and Hillary will never separate!) <shrug>

ETA: Are all their kids fully-grown? I remember during one of his campaigns he had a pretty daughter on "the trail."

I don't know why this is so  to hear -- I guess because they just celebrated their 40th anniversary a few weeks ago. :(

Nothing shocks me anymore. I wish both of them well and hope they get the happiness they want and deserve.

There's something about the end of a long marriage that's just really sad -- maybe because so few couples seem to make it that far.

Sorry, but when I read the thread title I thought, "isn't that the purpose of a gore?"

In seriousness, this is :(. Wish them the best.

After 40 years of marriage, aren't you pretty close to death anyway? I mean, unless you're in Yemen and marry when you're six.

At 62?? I should hope not! At least not in this day and age. My parents are older than that, and I'd like to think they're not at death's door yet!

This is sad when a couple has been together that long.

Mind, I will be extra sad if it turns out the separation is because one of them has been sneaking around with some 20-year-old...

ITA that this is sad. However, I would be shocked out of my wits if it turns out that the couple were able to agree to a separation before the media blasted the story of one (or the other) sneaking around.

Dear, dear mr. heckles - I must be approaching the twilight years of my life, as my husband and I have been married for 37 years and I assure you that we did not marry at 6. I will let my kids know that they should be planning my funeral.

as Norlite says - separation and divorce happen. And it is :( for those involved in the situation.

    For sure.

Either way, I hope both of them are happy. If that takes separation, so be it. More power to them if it's amicable, especially after such a long marriage.

Always sorry to hear of a divorce with a couple that has spent many years together. Didn't they just buy or build some huge home in California?

Maybe it's Tipper running around with a 20 y/o? Stranger things have happened.

Anyway, it's not that unusual for a couple married 40 years to divorce. My parents have been married 42 years and my mom is close to divorcing my dad. The only reason she won't is because financially it would ruin them and screw up their retirement. They have basically been 'separated' but sharing a house for at least five years.

Sad to see this in the news. Let the gossip begin.
