Evidently there's a new soccer magazine coming out called "Howler", and in their first issue they are publishing an article about the state of the USMNT since 1990. IMHO, it's an outstanding analysis of where we've been, and points to where we are going. Highly recommended reading: http://whatahowler.tumblr.com/post/31313126129/what-is-american-soccer

I'll second the :cheer2:. Chelsea looking scattered at home against Juve, but still ahead and bf is now on the pitch as a late sub for Oscar (who was brilliant in the first half).

ETA: And a that was a very nice 1-2 with Hazard, but shot goes into the side of the net.

    Puerto Rico 0 v 0 LA Galaxy

Interesting final. Much better for PR than the 1st game.

    NJL

ETA: and Pia coached her last game for the USWNT last night in Denver - USA 6 v 2 Australia.

From a Galaxy perspective there's two thoughts...

    1) need to practice finishing

    2) an incredibly boring game....

NASL season is over for the Strikers. They lost 1-3 to the Carolina Railhawks (whatever that is) in Cary, NC last night in the NASL playoffs quarter finals. This to a team that did not beat the Strikers in 4 games during the regular season.

The Strikers had the worst road record in the NASL in 2012, 1 win in 14 games & generated but 8 points out of a possible 42, and it showed last night. Their performance was pathetic.

On to 2013 & a spring/fall split season. Since next years playoffs involve 2 teams in a 1 game championship game the Strikers have to do do better than a 4th place (2011) or 5th place (2012) finish to even qualify. But, the NY Cosmos join the league in 2013 and that is supposed to make up for everything.

    We'll see.

Dempsey's goal was actually quite nice (sorry Buzz!). Excellent timing on his part to push that rebound in.

I also have somewhat of a silly question about own goals. From what I could understand, as long as a shot is on target without being touched by a defender, it doesn't count as an own goal. Which is why I am confused by some fans who keep saying this was an own goal by Koscielny. Did the rule change recently?

Major Controversy at the USMNT callups today. Jozy Altidore got snubbed, this despite being in great form with his club team. To replace Jozy (and Terrence Boyd) Klinsmann called up the formely disgraced Eddie Johnson from Seattle in MLS and incredibly...Alan Gordon who doesn't even start for San Jose. This is a major snub to Chris Wondolowski, Gordon's teammate, who is coming close to setting the all time goal scoring record for one season in MLS. If that's not good enough to get a call up, what is?? And I'm not just saying that because I played Little League with Wondo's Dad. :)

And amazingly, Johnson scored both goals with the second assisted by Gordon. Either lucky or good, who knows...

England beat San Marino yesterday 5-0, Italy beat Armenia 3-1, Canada beat Cuba 3-0, USA beat Antigua 2-1, Argentina beat Uruguay 3-0, Germany beat Rep. Of Ireland 6-1, Russia beat Portugal 1-0, Spain beat Belarus 4-0.

Several of the Cuban team seems to have defected before the match. It is a shame they put themselves before their team. A real shame. And what s up with that shaky victory by the US against Antigua?!

The USA simply is not that good right now, with or without Donovan's injury. They may make the hex, but there's a decent chance they won't get out of the hex. For all of that, I'll take a 2-1 road win any day. Especially with a 90 minute game winner...;)

As for the Cubans, they lose players in all sports when the players can get a chance to defect. It's the ultimate comment on the current political system & regime.

Antigua played it smart, a tiny field great for bunkering, and then it poured rain t'o help their cause too. USA was very fortunate to come out with a result.

It wont be easy against Guatamala, even though it will be in front of a sold out crowd in KC's Livestrong Park. The team is hurting at LB and in midfield, and getting inconsistant play from Dempsey and Gomez which is killing the offense.

If this team doesn't find itself but quick, Klinsmann could have one of the shortest coaching tenures in recent memory.

    :respec:

If not making the WC is unacceptable, then going out w/o even making the hex is beyond unacceptable. Beating Guatemala is a must.

NJL (...then, Klinsmann has to only finish 3rd to get to Brazil 2014...that MIGHT be doable...)

Canada is away to Honduras today and if we go clean we move on. It would be so cool to see Canada qualify for the World Cup. So here's hoping we win and move a step closer to that goal.

Fifteen minutes to go in the game between Portugal and Northern Ireland and NR is still leading Ronaldo & Co 1 - 0!

Postiga scores for the home team! It is now 1–1 but no matter what happens, I think NR has a lot o be proud of.

Good grief!.......... Proof that playing those "little countries" away is actually very difficult.

NJL (...here's hoping we do better against Guatemala in KC...)

ETA: The final was Honduras 8 v 1 Canada.....:(

    USA 3 v 1 Guatemala.

USA gave up an early goal to trail 0-1, then scored 3 in 26 minutes or so ( 1 by Bocanegra & 2 by Dempsey) for the win. A good, solid performance by team USA, especially after the defensive lapse on the early goal.

The USA & Jamaica move on to the hexagonal from the group. Joining them in the hex are: Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, & Panama. If memory serves, the hex begins on Feb 6, 2013 & runs through Oct, 2013.
