They're reporting two explosions, seconds apart. It was very close to the finish line. NBC is providing live coverage.

One of my good friends volunteered at the finish line last year & she was volunteering again this year. No idea where & I am yet to hear back from her. Must not panic, must not panic.

I hope everyone is safe and sound. These runners had to work so hard just to enter the race and finishing should have been a moment of joy, not sorrow.

wow, reports coming in are crazy...reports of at least 2 who have lost limbs, at least 12 seriously injured, another hotel just put on lockdown, and Mile 26 had been dedicated to Newtown, several Newtown families were sitting very close to the explosion (first one?). unbelievable :(

I hope your friend is okay.

I have a friend who posted this morning on facebook she was going down to watch, but I have no idea where. Because of crowds, it seems the chance she was at the finish line is small, but I hope she facebooks again soon! (ETA: She hasn't yet but another friend of hers posted that she contacted her. So she's accounted for.)

Large notable gathering of people. Probably had nothing to do with the event itself. Absolutely ridiculous that things like this happen. It just makes me so sad.

I just discovered this while reading news during my lunchbreak. There are a lot of sick minded people out there. I wonder if this may be a terrorist attack?

I am so sorry for all those affected by this. This is horrible.

    Yeah, you're right. :(

But on a related note, what could people have against Boston? It's probably the least uncontroversial of major American cities. :(

Well, assuming it was international terrorism, it has nothing to do with Boston, but everything to do with America.
If it was domestic terrorism- who knows. But who would have expected an Oklahoma City bombing? That's not even really a major American city...

Ioana- glad you heard from your friend!

If this was an act of terrorism, then it's not about the city itself, its about fear. The Boston marathon is an inconic American event, and damaging it in this way can do a lot both physcially and mentally. From here on out, it will always be marked by this tragedy.

Twitter has reports that stopped runners are now dealing with hypothermia, and many spectators have given away their coats. NOTHING as bad as people who were right near these explosions, but a huge crowd of people who have health issues due to exposure is just going to put even more of a strain on medical services.

Southpaw- hope you all are safe too! Why 5pm?

EDIT: Probably because 5pm will be rush hour...maximum people on the streets, etc.

Right-as we don't know what who or why this happened, caution is advised.
