I was surprised to see this on our local news last night and then this article in our paper this morning:

    http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/News/article.php?ID=84344

Northeast TN & Southwest VA is not exactly a hotbed of skating activity:lol:. I'm going to call the rink later this morning and see if they expect her to be back practicing this week. I would love to take my daugher up to watch.

It's great to have her setting up a practice in our area!

    Good for her..

I'm going to the show on Saturday and I'm so excited to see her back on the ice.

    Cool!

I assume they mean it's been 14 years since she's performed, not 14 years since she's been on the ice?

I've always loved Debi and admire her as much for her off ice accomplishments as her impressive on ice achievements.

I'll be looking forward to seeing her on the broadcast. :) Too bad I missed any chance of seeing skate in person, now that she's no longer in my town. :( Of course, I was unaware of that fact that she was on staff at the hospital here for several years. :slinkaway

When I interviewed her for my podcast last year, she told me show only skates an average of about once a year, mainly because her family suggests it to her. So I guess she's been on the ice 14 times. :p

I'm glad to read that Debi is skating again. Do any FSU posters plan to attend this show?

Very nice article. I remember all of the drama surrounding Debbie and Katrina
"The Two Carmen's" back in the day. Sounds like it will be a really good show and I am looking forward to reading the reports from the folks who are lucky enough to attend.

How did I not know this about Debi? I grew up in Richlands, where it says that she is working. My parents still live there.

"In addition to winning the bronze medal in the 1988 Winter Games, Thomas was named skating’s World champion in 1986"

She was NAMED skating's World Champion? By whom? Can I name this year's?

Wow. It's pretty amazing to think someone can go from having a life so massively revolved around skating, to barely stepping on foot on the ice in so many years. I admire how much she's done with her life after skating; I'm sure it's very easy for these top athletes to just settle into a skating-based life after retirement (not that there's anything wrong with that) but she's clearly a diverse, intelligent and ambitious woman. I'm jealous of those who get to go and see her skate!

I love when there are rinks in random, remote places.

Debbie has definitely been on the ice in the past 14 years because there are pics of her goofing off on the ice on her facebook page.

I'm always so impressed when a skater can create a whole new life for themselves outside the insular world of skating. Debi is a remarkable lady and I hope that she realizes how amazing her achievments are. Still the only African American woman (or man) to win a world title and an Olympic medal to boot. And now an orthopedic surgeon! Amazing, amazing lady!

She posted a video of herself practicing on Facebook about a month ago. It's pretty hilarious, because it looks like it's on a really empty public session. She's racing around the ice doing the occasional 2toe, spin combo, etc, and the people around her are all holding on to the boards for dear life!

The great thing about Debi is that if you comment on her facebook page, she's very likely to respond!

I had the thrill of a lifetime today. I got to meet and talk to Debi Thomas at the press conference for the Tribute Show. She was amazingly down-to-earth. She introduced my friend and me to her very handsome son. She looks fabulous!

Great to hear that Debi made it - she had been injured around Thanksgiving time. Enjoy the show!

I saw those and wondered if the public had any idea who she was. You think they realized they were on the ice with a former world champ and Olympic silver medalist? ;)

You know something...I'd post my thoughts, but since Maximillian said all I was going to say, I just thought I'd quote him instead. :D

Seriously, Debi really is quite the impressive lady. I only wish I'd gotten a chance to see her perform. So jealous of those who went to the show this weekend.

I believe she was 6th at US Nats in '84. With Roz out, Tiffany Chin and Jill Frost injured, didn't she have the opportunity to compete at '84 Worlds?

The U.S. didn't submit the names for any alternates that year so not only would 4th place finisher Frost not been allowed to compete had she not been injured, but 5th place finisher Kathryn Adams could not either, let alone Debi down in 6th.

It wound up being a real shame for Adams as it was her only opportunity to compete at Worlds and she lost it due to a dumb admin. error on the part of USFS

I've seen a few clips of Frost and she was good. What was Adams like?

Anyway, there is an '84 Worlds feature pinning the admin. error on (then future) USFSA President, Claire Fergeson.

I remember Frost as having good basics. She was actually a threat for the '85 Worlds team but went to Nats injured and couldn't move above 4th [again]. She may have even finished lower. IDK.

I just remember Adams as blonde, youthful. She would continue on thru the '85 - '86 season I think but she disappeared well before Calgary '88
