Could you please say a prayer for one of my co-worker's daughter?

For three years Jocie has been battling a strep infection that has settled in her lungs. She has been in the hospital numerous times and had to have a PICC Line (for home IV antibiotics treatment) put in three times since May of last year for 6 weeks at a time. These antibiotics are not doing anything, and she has had several adverse reactions to some of them. Now they have discovered a second strain of strep and a fungus. She has had to have her bronchial tubes surgically cleaned twice in the past month and within hours they are clogged. She is only 17 years old and terrified because most of the time she is wheezing and cannot take a full breath. This is so scary , since things do not seem to be getting better. We are all hoping that the biopsies done yesterday will help them reveal more information. (They have sent the samples to a specialist in Virginia)

So can you please say a prayer for her & her family?

That is scary and not normal for her age. Is she otherwise healthy or has she always been a sickly child? Have they checked for mold in her house? She doesn't have problems with her lungs such as CF or anything, does she? There must be a reason she can't shake these problems.

Poor girl. I'll be praying. Please update when you can.

And I second the suggestion about the mold.

She was always very healthy until she got Mononucleosis right before all of this started 3 years ago. They have had the house tested for mold twice and nothing shows up (they did a professional cleaning with a company anyways to make sure) She does not have CF (although they do have a vest like they use for CF that took them over a year to get her insurance company to approve )

That is what is making this so scary...this strain of strep just seems to resist any kind of treatment. That is why they are sending her file to the specialist in Virginia to see if they can see something the doctors here are missing.

I forgot to add that she has also recently tested positive for MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to some antibiotics.

    Of course!
I'll be praying for all concerned, including the Doctors who are treating her - that they will discover what the problem really is, and be able to treat it effectively.
    Please, keep us updated.

Yes, hospital aquired MRSA (not the CAMRSA) is difficult to treat. My Infectious Disease doctor friend predicted 10 years ago that the bugs would eventually win. :( I hope that it is not the case here. Have the done any testing for Histoplasmosis? A fungal infection that can be associated with birds and bird droppings. Although the wiki article indicates that many patients are immunocompromised, I have taken care of a couple of kids who had normal immune systems.

I will keep the co-worker's family in my thoughts. And hopeful that they can find a treatment that works.
