Article on ice dancers HUANG Xintong / ZHENG Xun

    落选赛成中国冰舞黄金组合最后机会 冬奥会后退役
    http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-04-24/13546536099.shtml

    Quick summary:

HUANG / ZHENG have been together for 14 years (!!) and nebelhorn trophy is their last chance to qualify for the Sochi Olympics. Because her health issues, they will certainly retire after Sochi. He is not considering to find a new partner.

They recently performed in an ice show and were quite happy with her recovery. There is certainly a lot of pressure for the team to qualify for Sochi, and the competition is way more difficult compared to four years ago.

After retiring, he wants to coach the little ones, and she just wishes to "heal and rest" first.

I so hope they qualify, but I think they will be at Sochi in any case if they can regain their national championship, because China qualified for WTT this year (top 6) and the Olympic version has the top 10 teams. And I am expecting them to regain it. :encore: I hope Huang continues to heal!

So maybe my eyes were not deceiving me when I thought it was Hao ZHANG in a Toronto area skate shop on Sunday with a bunch of young asians (maybe some skaters.. wasn't really paying attention to them)? ;)

Yes they are still in Canada. YAN Han just posted a picture of himself taking a dance class. Other than that, not much news.

Whilst I really dislike her work (Kostner's programs being an exception), she surely can't do any worse than the crap he had last season. :p

Coach YAO is still the head coach of the national team.

ZHAO is the 8th member of the pairs coaching team. His role is not yet finalized, but according to the report he will likely coach WANG Xuehan / WANG Lei and CHEN Xiaoxue / GUO Wenxiong.

It's Zhang, Li, Zhao and one to be confirmed

Sorry I pasted in a rush and added the link without any explanation.

P/T will be assistant coach. Li MingZhu will be coaching ladies. Pairs and singles will be training in Beijing; Ice dancing will be elsewhere, coached by 奚鸿雁

This second article link posted by jlai seems to say (last section) that Pang/Tong still hope to compete in the Sochi Olympics despite his knee injury while also transitioning to a coaching role? http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-05-15/00006568581.shtml

I wish P/T would just retire. From the article it sounds like the injury is v hard to heal and another Olympics may not be worth it. Plus he is putting off surgery which makes it worse

Agreed, and China only has two Olympic spots, so if Pang/Tong don't retire means that either P/Z or S/H (probably the latter) won't get to go. Sadly, I think P/T might be forced to continue in the hopes of earning an Olympic medal.

A short interview with Zhao Hongbo:

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-05-22/00006581256.shtml
ETA: He said he's not forced to do this; the team needs him and he won't dwell on the personal benefits. There are some problems but it's better to know now than at the Olympics. At the moment Yao is still in the hospital because of his neck (???). So he'll know more about work arrangements later.
Zhang respected Zhao's choice of lp music this year (Yellow River Concerto). Zhao thinks it's important to show case something representative of your people. He's not lonely because he's doing it himself; his wife will help as health allows. (He says it's a girl and the baby will be their "treasure" regardless of sex)

    An article about his role:
    http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-05-22/01306581152.shtml

This one has more about S/Z's personal life:

He said for sure Pang/Tong will take up one spot, so it's just a matter of Sui/Han vs. Chen/Zhang. And it is on these two pairs that he will focus most of his energy. He also said that although it will be a challenge, gold/silver will be within P/T's reach. Ack. I wish they'd let P/T retire and rest, and let the two young pairs go instead. :(

Why does it matter what music the pair uses. :p

I wish China did not qualify a pair for Sochi if only to finally let P&T retire and rest. With how broken P&T are and how green and untested the other two top pairs are, I think China is very daring even thinking about a pairs medal.

    Nan Song has announced programs:
    http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-06-03/22256603264.shtml
(Sorry I couldn't figure out what the music choices are based on the Chinese translations of foreign words and titles)

Short program is gonna be some sort of wild movements; lp is silence of the lamb
He says his strength is in his bladework; he thinks he's not that far off from the top skaters. He needs experience and performance skills.

My guess would be Song's short program is to Bruch, long program to The Mission.

Actually he means blues music, not Bruch.

And Han Yan's short programme will be Minor Waltz (Laurent Korcia) and Viper's Drag ( Nigel kennedy's version)

Han Yan talked about his new programmes during the press conference of Artistry On Ice: http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2013-06-15/23256621390.shtml?bsh_bid=246472924

The short(music had been revealed,Minor waltz mixed with Viper's drag) is about a guy falls in love with a girl and do some crazy things, and Han Yan added later on his weibo " it's quite hoodlumish."

And the Long is from the soundtrack " Hannibal" and he is going to portrait Dr. Hannibal Lecter.According to the weibo of Han Yan's fan club, the music piece he use is "gourmet valse tartare" mixed with "the blue danube"from Strauss II. Lori choreographed a short programme with "gourmet valse tartare" for Patrick Chan back in 2006,but someone who apparently listened to the new music cut said it's very different from Patrck's.

Han Yan said the short is fun and the long is "unbelievably difficult". I am very looking forward to the two new programmes!
