Having looked at the SPs, I'd still have Baiul in first.
I have always wanted to know what Maria did (or did not do) at her infamous debut at Worlds 93 to place so poorly in Qualifying. Does anybody have any info on what she tried (and likely failed) or a video?
The results of Maria's qualifying group were
**** CUT OFF POINT for Qualifying *****
Maria probably landed at most 2 triples to not qualify vs. the women on the lower rungs of that list (who only had triple toe loops and triple salchows in their repertoire)
Wow I loved Butyrskaya's LP at this competition! I never had any idea she was so good that year, definitely the best LP that year IMO.
That's exactly what I noticed.
I thought she made a good effort at getting (back?) more softness in this performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVt3I4IL18s
Maria would have defended her World title in 2000 with her free skate from the 94 Europeans IMO. She might have come 2nd in the LP phase to Kwan but that would have still been enough to win overall with the factored placings. Of course by 2000 she was a name whereas in 1994 she was a nobody in the judges eyes which explains her scores and non podium finish.
What were the SP results in 2000?
Butyrskaya- Slutskaya - ??? - Kwan - Gusmeroli - Volchkova? /Sebeteyen??
The protocol has that crazy triangular matrix of results from the 'one by one' scoring system...sheesh..I had forgotten how that looked.
But, remember, there was a Qualifying Round, and of the seven mentioned above, only Butyrskaya and Sebestyen were in Qualifying Round "A."
The SP results in 2000 were:
In the qualifying round though Kwan was 2nd to Slutskaya in her pool and Butyrskaya won the other pool.
Sorry I didnt realize others had already answered.
Thanks. I remember now, the uneven qualification, Kirkegaard, Sebesteyen and DOuchine placing really high as a result and Gusmeroli losing her chance of medal because of it.
