This isn't an April Fool's joke, at least not as far as I can tell.

Belorussian media is reporting that Alexander Abt will compete in pairs for Belarus and is looking for a partner in Minsk right now: http://www.tvr.by/eng/news.asp?id=2253&cid=18

I wonder if people will continue to swoon over his skating when they are really just swooning over this looks. It's not as if his actual skating was really worth all the attention he got. ;)

Probably that's Abt's own little April Fool...I cannot imagine him returning to competitive skating and even in Pairs...he only has little "experience" from Averbukh's shows and that's all.

Very strange. Maybe he posted that as a joke on one of the Russian social media sites and this website published it believing it to be true.

I'm so sick of reading that argument every time Abt's name comes up... he had excellent basic skating and musicality, some nice jumps and spins, and a quite good career (silver at Euros, top 5 at Olympics/Worlds). Many skaters in that same "so close, but yet so far..." position would get a lot of attention from fans who believe they had the potential to go further. It's one thing to say he got more attention because he's good looking, which is probably true as it has been for many athletes. It's really very offensive, though, to both Abt and his fans to imply that people are just swooning over his looks and seeing skating qualities that weren't there.

ETA: You did wink, so maybe you were kidding. If so, then consider my response a general one to the people that make that argument all the time.

The wink is there because Abt always seemed to generate some sort of polarity during the height of his popularity. You'd have fans on one side and then people getting mad about his popularity on the other. My post was an obscure reference to one of the more popular posters, I think it was Andrey, basically letting many of the Abt fans have it one day. I could be wrong about the which poster it was though.

I remember that. Andrey might have said something, but I believe it was Louis who coined the phrase "Abt sob-sisters."

He won his last nationals and was 5th at the Olympics. Not too shabby a record.

Can you lose your eligibility as a singles skater but still be eligible for pairs . Not sure this is his situation, but just wondered.

Fooled twice already. I thought for sure this one was a not so believable ruse. Altho' wouldn't it be wonderful (if his body was willing and time was suspended)! :swoon:

I guess count me in as one of the Abt sob-sisters! :p Sasha was a very good singles skater in his day with good basics even if not a lot of speed. *(Maybe his speed was deceptive because his long legs and sublime glide covered the ice so smoothly). His glide across the ice was exquisite and even as a macho male, he had an elegant look. He truly was able to overcome his height, and he made his endlessly long legs work for him. I'd much rather look all day at Alexander Abt vids rather than barf at some of the Worlds 2013 performances from lesser known as well as better known male contenders.

    Brings back some memories:

Well, but pairs ... hmmm, he'd really have to find the right partner at his age. Can he still do the required triples???

Seriously, I’m annoyed by this as well. Sasha’s basic skating in practice was just :swoon:, probably in the league of Chan, maybe even better if it comes to acceleration on ice. I remember one practice before some show in Russia were even some of his teammates, who were skating at the highest level stopped and watched him warming up edges – I think that speaks for itself. Not to speak about really big jumps that he still made look easy and smooth. Still some people don’t get tired to indicate that his major qualities were just looks! :wall:

To go on with good memories I loved both of his programmes in 2000:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crdeP2oMqCE (CoR 1999, LP)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQF3s-bG8r8 (Worlds 2000, SP)

However, as much as I would love to have again a chance to watch Sasha practicing live, I hope this is april fools’s joke. I definitely think it would be smarter to focus on his coaching career. I’m pretty sure he can still do the easier triples (as he did quads), but he is 36 something and I don’t think he has enough time to learn doing lifts – in particular as he never seemed to be a particular fan of weight training. :p (His sleeveless costumes were  + :scream:).

    ^^ And yes, thank you!

I just want to add (as is historically apt ;)) that Russian men were swimming in talent when Abt came up, otherwise he would have been the Russian champion the rest of the world were contending with for World and Olympic medals.

The bright star born too early or too late. That is one of my favourite descriptions of him.

However, I am inclined to believe that this is an April Fool ;) Not that I would object too much to it being true.

Ha. My buddy David Forberg (RIP - you are missed) coined the term Russian Sob Sisters on SkateFans. Abt was one of the RSS' favorites. I may have borrowed.

I did have an original line that went something like "if Abt looked like Timchenko, I wonder how many fans he'd have."

I hope this is an April Fool's Day joke. Abt had some bad luck, but he was also a party boy who smoked and drank too much and trained too little. The ends of his program were almost comical with the sluggishness and panting. I can't imagine Abt lifting someone at 4:10 in a program.

Thanks for clarifying. RIP to your buddy, Mr. Forberg. Who were his favorite skaters?

Re poor luck Sasha Abt: Who knows whether or not he began partying and drinking as a direct result of his bad luck, injuries and his inability to gain traction in trying to win against the triumvirate of Yags, Plushenko, Urmanov (just as Kulik grabbed the Olympic gold medal and wisely departed the eligible scene).

Of course, in any case, we're all responsible for our own actions, choices, and regrets. April Fool's or not, I hope Abt has overcome his party-boy days, and appreciates what he was able to accomplish in fs. He certainly had talent to burn and he went far but he could not overcome his lack of rep even after he overcame injuries to skate well enough to win when his rivals erred. As a kid, Abt was not just eye-candy, he had bravura talent that was never fully realized. But in the sport of figure skating, that's not an anomaly.

God, I thought for sure this was an April Fool's joke. "How dare they tease me this year with an Abt thread."

Yes, indeed. A moment of silence for David, known here as Capt Crunch.

Forberg always had highest respect for those who trained and showed up hungry to compete with big jumps (ummm, sadly that's not Sasha Abt :shuffle:). Among the men IIRC he was a big fan of Joubert, Goebel and Michael Weiss.

You did. I do believe we :lynch: you for it.

Agreed. After one too many personal interactions with Sasha and first-hand stories from acquaintances who knew him, sad to say I completely believe all the rumors about him being lazy and/or unhappy and/or to invoke Esta, TOO MUCH IN SMOKE AND DRINK. They did say he buckled down for the 2001-02 season -- considering all the good performances and consistent quad he showed that season, it's a shame he couldn't mentally motivate himself to train properly over multiple seasons.

That said, hands down he had the best glide and power of any skater I have ever seen in over 16 years of watching live elite skating (and I was never looking at his face :shuffle:) You know those first 30-60 seconds when the men come out for a practice session or warmup and are doing edge pulls and stroking drills around the perimeter? There is no one I would have rather watched than Sasha Abt. :swoon: We'd pass the drool cup and moan like we were watching porn. His camel spin too... glorious both front and back. Perfect stretch and line, beautiful speed. He rarely put it together in competition but the 2000 Worlds short posted above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQF3s-bG8r8) is one of my all time favorite performances of any skater. He shows such freedom and speed and flight over the ice... so rare to see even back then when the scoring system didn't mandate a million transitions, pretzel spins and thrashing slow steps that pretty much prevent us from seeing this quality on display ever again. :slinkaway:

Adding to the Youtube links, a very sweet exhibition

If this is true indeed, I wish him the best of luck. As a true Abt-fan (our club performed in a little show with him back in 1999 and all the mothers were :swoon: about him ) who was absolutely devastated as a 13-year-old when he was robbed at Euros 2002 I'd really really love to see him compete again. Whether in pairs or whatever. I just think it will be quite difficult for him but then again...stranger things have happened ;)

Or for those who liked them both and could appreciate that Yagudin did enough important things better under the standards of the time to be at least equally deserving of the win.

You don't know how much I wish it was true. 'Artsakh' might well be my fave men's SP ever.

And I concur with those who feel he was robbed of the 2002 Euro title.

On another note, was I the only one who liked Timchenko?
