Just wondering if anybody has heard anything about the event (or even if there is one)

I usually like their selection of skaters

    Skaters announced.
    http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/japanopen2011/detail.html#player

    JAPAN
    Ando
    Suzuki
    Kozuka
    Takahashi

    N.AMERICA
    Czisny
    Rochette
    Chan
    Buttle

    EUROPE
    Korpi
    Meier
    Plushenko
    Gachinski

I'm very much confused. Asada must have declined. Don't know why.
Chan invited! Another surprise. He's not my favorite though.
Plushenko and Gachinski, nice. Plus Tuktamisheva would be better.
I wanted Hanyu instead of the old man.

NMURA, we posted at the same time!

Personally, I hoped that Michal Březina would be there,
since he tweeted that he so wanted to skate in Japan and show his Kodo program...

In past two years, Asada's performances at Japan Open were fiascoes, and the whole grand prix seasons have ended in disaster. Avoiding the "jinx" is one reason I can think of. If so, she could be more "serious" for the new season's start.

But why Suzuki? Murakami should be favored before her, isn't it?

Hanyu is invited to Carnival on Ice. He's going to perform at all off-season shows in Japan. I can understand he needs to earn money but doing shows will be a good training for him.

    My 3 hopes:
I hope Suzuki proves that she's still got a few more years in her. XD
I hope Jeff Buttle shines with excellence like he used to.
I hope everyone skates magnificently :D

Why Gachinski? Maybe I just need to warm up to him...

again, i'm very pleased with their selection of skaters. if only time past faster...

which team do you guys think will win?

Both Gachinski and Plushenko? Why 2 men from the same country when there is so many interesting men in Europe?

Mirai is competing in back-to-back Grand Prix events, starting with Skate Canada and CoC the following week, so I can only surmise she doesn't want to burn out with the added travel/event.

Of course, Czisny is slated to compete at Skate America only a couple of weeks after the Japan Open, so who knows?

I just want a competition for her in the beginning of the season so she can bomb her first FS there and then rock the GPs.
Or maybe she'll compete in any summer competition?

Nagasu has cancelled 4 event trips to Japan in past two years. Probably IMG didn't offer to her this time. I guess Frank Caroll is determined not to send Nagasu to Japan.

Yes, this Carroll's determination was the cause of Mirai's stress fracture.:slinkaway

What Eris meant is that Carroll stands by the boards with a cattle prod and he makes Mirai practice even if she's in enormous pain from injury.

    Oh wait, that's Tom Z!

I thought JO used to require 2 pros in each team. Did they change the rule? Should be an easy win for JP this year.

i think mirai's been cancelling the events for all good reasons. the event is too close to her gp assignments, she has back to back assignments, injury, and (i think) growth spurt.

i know mirai has a big fan base in japan so i really hope she gets NHK one of these seasons, i know she wants to visit her family there.

Well, no offer in the first place, she's not "cancelling" this year. Considering Nagasu's (first) GP in past 2-3 of years, she's not well prepared anyway. Such a vague reason is not persuasive enough to abandon the prize money of at least $10,000 and show fees. Nagasu has never visited Japan after 2008 NHK trophy. She's already lost a lot of fan bases in Japan. I can't think of any other factor than Frank Caroll.

You're correct. It was Jeffrey Buttle, Cynthia Phaneuf and Joannie Rochette. The fourth person on the team was Adam Rippon
