BBC is reporting that police are clashing with protestors outside the Maracana stadium as the Confederations Cup is being played.

It was Fred. While on the ground.

It doesn't look too bad so far, I thought Spain would own Brazil right away.

Ooooh ok I stand corrected. I am a bit surprised at the dominance of Brazil but then again it is "only" a warm up tournament. The WC is a different creature altogether. :p

Awww... Brazil is a very young team and very exciting to watch judging by this match. Their chances next year seems to be getting better and better. 2-0!

David Luiz' save from almost inside the net was great!
Also loving how the guys are just jumping into the crowd after scoring. It wouldn't have been possible before the renovation.

And Fred does it again!
3-0

I did not see this coming. They are actually playing like a team!

And Ramos missed the PK... just not happening for Spain today.
OMG, and Pique just got sent off!

Uruguay/Italy was a more entertaining match, this is just a beatdown.

Brazil looks so impressive and Spain does not have a plan B. The missed penalty sums up the night for them.

Does Brazil ever have Spain's number! I did not expect this at all.

Call me surprised! Never thought this team could beat mighty Spain (or may be the Brazilian Football Federation sponsored those little parties for Spain on Recife and Fortaleza :shuffle: :p ).

And Scolari is a rock star :respec: Mano Menezes had basically the same players and never managed to make them really play together as a team.

Good Grief, El Tri lost another game, this time to Panama in the Gold Cup 2-1. How Chepo keeps his job is beyond me

Good question. Mexico's B team, the Olympic Gold team, is not quite as strong as Panama's. A surprise, but not that big a surprise. The really big shocker was Canada's 0-1 loss to Martinique on a goal in 2nd half added time (93rd minute?). Is Martinique a country? I thought it was part of France.

The USA better be ready for a game Tuesday. Our B team is actually a fairly good team, but it seems that the "minnows" are coming to the GC acting more like sharks than anything else.

Rumour has it that Diego Forlan wants to transfer to Toronto FC but he has denied the rumour. I wonder if it is just wishful thinking on part of TFC.

Not to worry Neil. Wondo gets his hat trick, Landon gets three points, and my guy Stu Holden scores!! USA guts Belize 6-1

So does all this mean Mexico is in danger of not making it to the WC?!

That's a bit premature, but there's no doubt that the team is underperforming, and that there is a ton of pressure on Chepo. If they get bounced out of the Gold Cup, he's gotta be sacked. But I suspect that El Tri will somehow manage to squeak into the quarterfinals, and that may be enough to keep his job through qualifying.

But you can bet that Chepo's bosses are nervous as heck right now. That loss to Panama was VERY embarrassing.

USA beats Cuba 4-1 and Costa Rica 1-0 to win Group C in the Gold Cup. Next, in the Quarter Finals, they play El Salvador.

Of special note is Cuba's continuing on from the group stage to the Quarter Finals. They had to defeat Belize by 4 goals to do it and did win 4-0 with the final goal coming in the 93rd minute. Wild stuff.

USA looked OK against the Ticos, but to move on in the tournament they will have to do better. El Salvador will not be a pushover, and they will make it tough to score on them. USA needs strong games out of the midfield to win.

Sepp is an idiot. No one is going to travel there any way, at any time of year. I went to S Africa, am in the process of making plans for Brazil despite the problems at Confederations Cup, and would go to Russia but for their atrocious air safety record. However, there is no conceivable way I would ever consider going to Qatar, even for free; I will travel to other events to see the players and teams I follow.

We should be wondering what would the voters have done if they knew a vote for Qatar would mean a January WC? Then I realized it wouldn't mean anything since it was all bought and paid for...

Tito Vilanova has stepped down as Barca's coach because of cancer and Luis Enrique is rumoured to be leading the race to succeed him.
