I am happy that he is going to compete in the senior ranks this year. It could be a struggle initially but he has the talent to establish himself for the seasons that follow, particularly in the weak Russian mens field. If he manages to win the Russian nationals (or even place 2nd), I think the RSF will put its political power behind him.

I think it's important for his 2018 chances that he joins the seniors THIS season and not next. The extra season in seniors far outweighs any positives he might have gotten from staying on the JGP circuit IMO.

There was some confusion as to whether he would actually make his senior GP debut this year. About 1 year ago Mishin said in passing that Sasha would join the senior ranks this season. But last month Sasha's gf said on her askfm that he would very likely remain on the JGP circuit (the month before that she had said that the decision was 50-50). There has also been no news about him in the Russian media since JWC either. So other than Mishin's brief mention from a year back, I had nothing to go by. I'm very pleased that Mishin was able to keep his word.

I was disappointed for both Sasha and Sima when news broke that they were both left out of the senior national team. So I was somewhat surprised that Sasha was able to finally secure those 2 GP spots. I think in Sasha's case, it ultimately helped that his coach is influential and that he is (from what I gather about his family) less reliant on Federation funding than Sima is. Of course there are probably other reasons in play that we may never know about.

Most likely Russia will send Sasha to junior worlds.

What I'm really looking forward to is the winter youth olympics. Russia only has 1 spot for that but Sasha is essentially only competing with Aliev for that spot because of the narrow age eligibility.

IIRC isn't Aliev another young man with potential? He may not be ready by 2018 though. Sasha has a chance, I think.

Indeed, Aliev has good potential. But he has to work on his consistency/competitive mindset. I think Sasha has the advantage in those aspects, that and his 3A technique is superior. Presentation wise, I also think Sasha is closer to finding out what his own "style" is. Mishin commented last year that while most of his students develop at a steady pace, in Sasha's case sometimes things don't change for awhile and then he suddenly makes a big leap forward. So I'm hoping he makes another breakthrough this year.

1. He spent 10 days in early May in Colorado with Liza, Nugumanova, Lazukin, Gumennik and Semenenko. He worked on his footwork, general physical training and getting into shape.

2. In mid-May he went with Liza and Mishin to Switzerland to work with Lambiel. They stayed for 8 days. When he was in Switzerland, he met Denis there too.
Lambiel did his SP. He has not decided on his FP yet.

3. After Switzerland, he went on vacation for 3 weeks to Tsarevo Beach in Bulgaria.

4. For the upcoming GP, he and Mishin have plans for 4Ts in both programs. He is also working on 4S and will work on 4Loop in the future too. A couple months ago he tried 4Loop and was successful.

5. He is currently at a training camp at Igora. In mid-July he will go to Turkey for another camp (with Liza and some others). Plushenko will be at the camp in Turkey.

6. Sasha and Liza have plans to participate in both Nebelhorn and Finlandia.

His instagram shows that he's on a flight to Mishin's training camp in Erzurum Turkey. I guess this means his physical condition is okay.

Liza confirmed in her interview that Sasha, along with the others, will be traveling with her to Tartu in August.

He's not going to Finlandia but he will be going to the Samara Russian Cup event in a few days time. On the Nebelhorn entries list, Sasha is still listed as a sub. We should get a confirmation on Nebelhorn within the next few days. The last challenger series event before SC is the one held in Saransk, Mordovian Ornament on the 15th of October. I'm not sure if he'll be there but it's not improbable.

Competition news:

* Sasha will not skate at Nebelhorn, he is no longer listed as a sub on the updated entries list
* He might skate at the Nice Cup on 15th Oct (he is the defending mens winner) as Liza is going there according to Mishin's interview
* 1st stage of the Russian Cup series in Samara begins in about 4 hours time.
