Was watching some old skating/gymnastic videos on Youtube, and stumbled across this old fluff piece of Dominique Dawes from the 1996 Olympics. The music they use sounds so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it--and it's driving me crazy. :)

Does anyone know who composed this music or where I can find it?

Any help is much appreciated.

New article (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/15/sport/daisuke-takahashi-figure-skating-japan/index.html) on Dai entitled: Daisuke Takahashi: Japan's golden boy on the importance of being 'gorgeous'.

ETA - The word 'gorgeous' is a mistranslation by the author of the article. The word actually used by Dai was 'showmanship' (i.e. 'on the importance of showmanship' - see post 2 below). Hence, the article with corrected translation, reads:-

---Quote---
"A must-have quality for figure skaters is, I think, [showmanship]."

Japan's Daisuke Takahashi throws his head back and laughs, but he is serious.

His is a sport where performance is everything -- from the flamboyant routines to the glitzy outfits to the interaction with the crowd.

"The best part about figure skating is how I can have the entire audience's attention to myself," the former world champion told CNN's Human to Hero series.

"I believe performing and showing off is very important, but I constantly prevent myself from becoming too self-absorbed. The audience won't be moved if I'm performing only for my satisfaction.

"It's sort of like playing 'catch.' For me, when I'm watching musicals or performances, I feel a bit uncomfortable when the actor is too self-absorbed. I like the people who can perform while being sensitive of the atmosphere."

"I never thought I have anything special. I've always thought about what I don't have compared to other skaters," he says.

"I tend to think like other skaters get more applause than I do. I constantly think about ways I can level up, and I'm often jealous of other skaters," he adds, laughing. "When I see someone's cool performance, it makes me want to be like them, and that's what motivates me."
---End Quote---

About two hours, give or take, until Orb tries to capture the second leg of the Triple Crown. Nine starters, Orb breaking from the #1 hole. Will Itsmyluckyday have better luck on a track that will likely be no worse than good this time? Rosie Napravnik is on her home track with Mylute. Gary Stevens rides Oxbow again and he's won this race before as has trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Or is the fact everyone seems to be half-conceding to Orb a sign he's really that good? Even on TVG, where they're usually not as dumb about it as NBC (where it doesn't matter who wins the Derby, we get "CAN HE WIN THE TRIPLE CROWN?!?" even when no sane person would really believe it) most of the handicappers are admitting the choice is "Who do we use in the exacta with Orb?"

National teams of Russia figure skating for the season 2013/2014 period.

In the national team of Russia were not included skaters showed high sports results at competitions of the season 2012/13 and fulfilled the criteria for the formation of the official teams of Russia, established by the Ministry of Sports. Among them:

Valentine Chernishova (7th Championship of Russia);
Alsou Kayumova (5th Russian Cup Final);
Feodosiy Efremenkov (4th Cup of Russia);
Zhan Bush (5th Russian Cup Final);
Alla Loboda - Pavel Drozda (5th Russian Cup Final).

Also with the Championship of Russia in the older age groups (1-6 places, according to the criteria of the Ministry of Sports of Russia) included only winners and holders of 1-4 seats in pair skating and ice dancing, respectively.

In addition, the squad does not include winners of the Championship of Russia on young children in the younger age group that practiced in previous years.

Figure skater of the Samara region Pervushkina Diana was the only one included in the squad due only performance at the Games of Russian students, which, by virtue of the rules, can not be a large number of strong competitors.

In team sports couple got Katarina Gerboldt - Alexander Enbert not compete(?) at the event in the 2012/13 season.

This made me laugh so much... A young man wrote to "Dear Prudence," saying that his brother's "giant genitals" made him doubt that they had the same father. Apparently, the three brothers (now adults) and their father ended up taking a shower in a public situation and had never seen one another naked. The youngest brother had noticeably different "equipment"... but the hilarious part is Prudence's answer. Here it is:

Dear No,
It’s the Johnson brothers, Willie, Peter, and Rod! You and your brother got quite an eyeful of baby bro’s one-eyed wonder. I wish I knew what you meant by the superior “complexion” of your brother’s endowment. I’m just supposing that his Moby-Dick gives off a rosy glow due to excess blood flow. There are several ways to approach your central question: Did your mother give your father the shaft? First of all, you seem to be of the opinion that sexual characteristics are inherited only from the parent of the same sex. But as this website points out, genital size, like eye color and height, are traits inherited from both parents. It’s perfectly possible that your mother comes from a family of three-legged men and you and your older brother got the short end of that genetic lottery. You have one ambiguous (though substantial) piece of evidence for your theory that your parents’ divorce was due to your mother’s infidelity. But maybe your mother discovered that while she was gestating your father’s third son, he was the one cheating on her. Despite the nastiness of your parents’ parting, they have kept the reason quiet all these years. Since all of you boys appear to have been happily incurious about their split these many years, it’s probably a good idea to remain that way. You want to establish that your baby brother isn’t really a member of the tribe. But pursuing your hunch will only make a cock-up of things because nothing can change the fact that your father has always embraced all of you as his three sons.

For those suffering from skating withdrawal, the Victoria day competition in British Columbia is being live-streamed. It is at http://www.skatinginbc.com/. Click on the screen on the right-hand side of the screen, near the top.

It looks like the junior and senior competitors will start in about 1 1/2 hours.

If the past is any guide, this competition will likely be archived.

http://shoprainbo.com/rainbo-edge/Would-You-Like-to-Teach-Ice-Skating/

---Quote---
I received a call from a young man who wished to apply for a job as a skating instructor at the rink. The boy was very enthusiastic about teaching skating, and explained that he had played ice hockey when he was young, but had not skated in awhile and that he was a bit out of practice.

The next day, the young man showed up for our "interview-appointment." I was caught by surprise since he did not own his own skates, and was wearing rental skates! He then struggled to walk in those rental skates towards the ice sheet's entry door when I asked him to show me his skating skills... he figured he would somehow learn to skate once he was hired!

As I am away at the moment, I can only access the board from an iphone. However, when I was providing rep, instead of providing the intended positive rep - it came up negative instead!! Poor recipient! What seems to have happened is that when I was typing out the message, because of the tiny screen, the dot seems to have moved from approve to disapprove. Apart from me being a ****** and not taking enough care, is there anything that can be done to prevent this kind of mistake?

My assumption is that figure skating matched her sensibilities as a child and young teen, but the structure and discipline of the sport has served her well as a business person.

"Vera’s Personal Cause

HER TRAINING as a competitive figure skater, beginning when she was just 6 years old, left an indelible impression on Vera Wang. There were the adolescent years of intensive routines and ballet lessons to improve her posture, all the while juggling courses at the elite Chapin School. Yet ultimately failing to make the United States Olympics team, she has often said, is what drove her to succeed elsewhere in life.

But those years also took a toll on her psyche, in anxiety that has been manifested, she believes, in periods of depression throughout her life, which she has discussed only privately with friends. As she prepared to accept a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America next month, Ms. Wang said in an interview, she decided it was time to talk about the effects of anxiety on young people, and to make that a signature issue.

“No one knew when I was growing up that being a competitive figure skater was maybe not a good thing for my makeup,” Ms. Wang said. “It has been something I have lived with my whole life.”

Edited to add:
From USFS website when Vera Wang was inducted into the Hall of Fame:

"Vera Wang received a pair of ice skates as an 8-year-old on Christmas and began taking lessons. She won her first regional championship at 12. She twice competed at the U.S. Championships, placing fifth in 1968 in junior pairs with her partner, James Stuart. She once commented to People magazine in July 1991, The only thing that I loved as much as skating were clothes.

So, I guess I am alittle confused, as she competed Jr Pairs according to USFS website...not at the Sr Olympic eligible level. Jr level is not eligible for Olympic team selection. Was she competitive as a singles skater?

Sad to read that she has struggled with depression for so many years.

Question for computer experts

When all else fails, ask FSU and usually the question gets answered, so here is my last ditch effort to get a document printed.

Here is the scenario.

I completed the Russian visa application on line, following all the instructions, including those for printing the completed application. I am supposed to convert it to pdf using Acrobat 7, which I did. Neither the original document nor the pdf file showed the last 1/3 page of the form. It printed only the first 2 pages.

Also some of the questions had 'No' answers through a drop down menu. They appeared as blanks on the print out. I asked the visa company (Visa central) if this was normal, and they said no, the print out should look just like the form I see on the screen.

I realize this is not complete information for anyone to give me advice on how to resolve this, but any ideas would be welcome. I am totally at a loss. If I cannot apply for the visa or the consulate (or the visa company) does not accept my application in its current form, I will not be able to go to Russia at all (I would be OK with it if my money was refunded, but I don't think it will be).
