I was going to make this a poll, but it would have given lopsided results in favor of M&D because their LP performances to this in 91 and 92 were like a dream. Those turned them into legends of pairs skating.

I have always associated Liebestraum with M&D, and I felt that it may be unfair to compare anyone else with them. There have been a few really good performances to Liebestraum though.

Out of those, I probably like Ilia Kulik's interpretation the most (exhibition program). I love his flair.

Next would be Gordeeva-Grinkov's 98 Olympics ex and 1990 ex skated to this. It was beautiful.

Mao Asada was lovely, in 2010 and 2011, skating to this music. Just not enough to beat the other three I mentioned.

Totmianina-Marinin skated a SP to this at a 2000 GP, when they were a new pair and not yet developed into a top pair.

Did the great Protopopovs ever skate to this music? It seems to ideal for their style of skating.

I am really interested in seeing how Bazarova-Larionov's SP develops this season. Here is their test skate.

They did skate to Liebestraum. :) They also skated to Moonlight Sonata & (I believe, but I'm not certain) Mediation from Thais as well.

I haven't been able to find the Protopopovs' Liebestraum program on youtube either. Hopefully, if a copy exists, it will eventually find it's way online. :)

I knew about them skating to Moonlight Sonata and Meditation from Thais. I was not sure if they skated a complete program to Liebestraum or if it was only a part of their program. I thought I found one on Yt last night but the second part seemed to be something else.

The Protopopovs skated to Liebestraum at the 2006 Evening of Championship Skating. Unfortunately, I don't have this vid. :(

You picked my two favorite Liebestraum programs right off the top - M&D and Kulik.

I know the video is labelled 1990, but I think this was really the 1989 COI tour. The costumes are from their 1989 freeskate and Katia looks less mature than she did by spring of 1990.

The three pieces of music most folks think of as Protopopov signature are Moonlight Sonata, Liebestraum and Meditation from Thais. G&G also used all three pieces and skated great programs to them (the latter two as exhibition/tour numbers). Considering that both pairs had very calm skating and extraordinary positions, it isn't surprising that the same music looks good on both.

I think I have G&G's Liebestraum on one of the "Champions on Ice best of" videos. It might be Meditation from Thais though, it's been a while since I've watched the tape.
I never made that connection between the Protopopovs and G&G before, but you're right. Going slightly off topic, I remember the Protopopovs also had a memorable routine to Ave Maria as professionals in the 1980s. I think G&G would have been well suited to skate to that piece as well. :)

something about the liebestraum music makes skaters don purple/blue costumes when they perform to it ;)

Kulik's performance reminds me of the balcony scene in Kenneth Macmillan's Romeo and Juliet. I was pretty young when he won the Olympics so haven't looked at his performances with the same intensity that I have of the skaters in the past 10 years, but he is amazing in that clip! Skates like no one else; so much collected confidence in a way that isn't dull or off-putting. Off to see more of his stuff on youtube now...

Soft, romantic colours? ;)

I don't know who performed to Liebestraum before M&D (Protopopovs did, from all accounts, but I have not seen it), but they may have been the trend setters in those colors. Their program had a theme- she was a cloud; he was a poet who was in love with the cloud. So the purple/lavendar (although Artur wore somewhat graying colors in '91) were very much along that theme. Kulik wore white and that worked well too. Some colors would be too harsh- black or red, for example- and soft colors seem to be safe ones for this music.
