A woman seeking to expose misogyny in video games has suffered a harsh lesson in the extent of Internet viciousness, as a campaign of harassment escalated to a Canadian man creating a game that let people batter an image of her face.

I see some of these gamers are still mentally about 10 years old. Sad.

Well, no. But I'm always hopeful. ;)

I feel like some places in the internet are echo chambers for young boys and men to do completely disgusting things thinking it's hilarious when it's just disturbing and wrong.

And with that in mind, this link seems appropriate:
Daniel Tosh tells an audience member it would be "hilarious" if she got raped (http://jezebel.com/5924937/daniel-tosh-is-sorry-he-told-a-female-audience-member-that-she-should-get-hilariously-raped)

Jesus ****ing Christ. I feel like Tosh spouses hate that is disguised as "comedy". That's not a joke; it's wishing harm and inciting violence.

Eh. A union group in SC had a picnic and thought it would be funny to put Governor Niki Healy's face on a pinata and whack it with a bat, and that was a woman doing the hitting. It's not a male thing. Or a gamer thing. Just a maturity thing.

This was posted on my Facebook feed, and I'm one of two minds on that. If you heckle a comedian during his/her routine, you should be prepared to be heckled back. If everyone got verbally upset over a joke they found offensive, nobody would be able to enjoy any comedy routines. So the comedians definitely want to minimize hecklers as much as they can.

That said, Tosh's original joke about rape was not funny (any jokes about semi-realistic rape are simply not funny, IMO), and his response to the heckler was even less funny. Instead of heckling, the proper response would have been to leave the area, and make sure everyone in the audience saw you do it. You're protesting the lameness of the comedian, not the subject of the joke, because someone somewhere finds any joke to be offensive. And of course Tosh should stop being a lame unfunny comedian.

As for the video game dispute...you can't fight the subject so head-on that way. Censorship is never going to work, and the immature responses of the players don't particularly surprise me, especially with the anonymity of the internet. The only way to do it is to offer other games that are awesome and don't have misogynistic content.

I agree that a heckler during the show should expect a reaction. But it's one thing to be heckled, and another to suggest that it'd be "hilarious" if said heckler was gang raped.

I started following her when she began the Tropes versus Women video series. My daughter has donated to her kickstarter. Hopefully these attacks will only result in more support for her.
