In 2008 no one was from the same gym, including the alternates.

Nastia is such a class act and always so well spoken in her interviews. I'm looking forward to the return of her big Texas hair.
Her form and lines are simply to die for.... I don't watch gymnastics enough to know but when did the hair become a big hot mess???

That was my thought exactly on Friday night and again tonight! Not a single girl was really, truly tiffed except maybe Gabby Douglas. Those ponytail/sloppy buns are terrible! And while Jordyn Wieber at least didn't do THAT with her hair, she couldn't even be bothered with a scrunchie or hairband that at least matched her leo. Decidedly untiffed from these girls. Hopefully Marta & the national team will smarten and polish these girls up before London.

Happy, happy tears for McKayla right now!

I can't wait to see this. Just reading the posts here was making me tear up. It sounds like an amazing night for US gymnastics. Congrats to the team and teh alternates. Sad for Bross and kudos to Nastia for being so damn classy about it all. :respec:

I love that every member of the 2011 World Championship winning team was chosen in some capacity for the Olympics. However, sad that Sabrina Vega was the exception as she's so beautiful to watch and must feel like the odd person out. Loved seeing the girls cheering her on during her FX. Yes, I know Alicia was on the team too, but she had a great career and and an Olympics under her belt (plus a world title given to her last year).

I haven't followed gymnastics closely since the early-mid 80s (to feel really ancient, the days of Kathy Johnson, Mary Lou Retton, Kristi Phillips, etc. :o), with a bit of interest in the '96 Olympics since they were in my hometown.
I did go back last night and watch the entire Women's WC in Tokyo (team and AA finals) last year to get a bit of reference about what's gone one, but to my untrained and relatively uneducated eye regarding difficulty (I'm in no-teknik about difficultly levels) as what has gone on the past few years after watching the past four days......
I floved Kyla Ross - after reading here and hearing from Al Fatwig, I can see how Marta has been singing her praises to the high heavens. Her lines and overall "look" are beautiful. Yes, she may need some polish and to up her difficulty, but she's gorgeous when she hits.
I can see where Aly Raisman needs to work on stuff; her unpointed toes drive me freaking bonkers, especially on the UB. That said, she's an overall "rock" and seems like she's a good anchor for the team.
I don't get all the hate for Jordin Wieber here. She's as good as a competitor as they come as has the mental mettle when she fcuks up to come back roaring.
Maroney :swoon: her vaults are awe-inspiring. If she were more consistent on the other events, she'd be my favorite. I was crushed when she went OOB on her floor.
Douglas seems like she's going to be the new star for US Gymnastics. She's freaking amazing, and I hope like hell she can continue to kick ass. Her Beam, though? Yikes X 1000.

On a different shallow note, I simply do not get the love for Komova. I'm sorry, but the girl looks like a street urchin, and a smug one at that. Compared to Wieber at the WC, there was no comparison, especially in the AA final on the floor routine. As for Afanova, again petty, but that chick looks like John Malkovich when she was younger, and I don't think her gymnastics hold a candle to the top women in the world.

Nastia Liukin is a complete and total class act, and being in that arena seeing everyone around me stand up for one of my heroes when she was at her lowest point really really touched me. It was such a beautiful thing, I am so proud of that audience. I am so proud of her. She has shown us a classy beautiful competitor now in every emotional stage you can go through as a gymnast, and even after her world crushed she was so unbelievably supportive of everybody (in spite of being stuck in the middle of that confetti machine when it started going off, she was swatting at flies trying to get out of it )
She is a beautiful champion inside and out, we are so lucky to have had her in our sport.
I am so proud, so hoarse, so drained, and so fulfilled with this comp. Even though my favorites made some mistakes I haven't enjoyed a gymnastics competition this much since the 2008 Olympic AA competition. It was a beautiful night of gymnastics, I was so lucky to be sitting in a section with great taste, and I am so thankful not to be in that damn car driving anymore.
Oh and I've decided that Bridget Sloan would be an amazing person to party with, the girl is L.O.U.D. I thought she had a microphone on during Alicia's beam (she was sitting where the men were above us) her screaming and cheering filled up the whole arena. I love what a true team this is, they are all the best of friends and even Bross at the end was sooo classy and cute. (my heart broke 12 times for her, and then my lungs broke 12 times with that finally hit beam routine she did right afterwards)

Sigh. the nbc vids don't work in the UK. I wanna see the announcement dammit!
What a great US team! They are thee ones to beat in London. COngrats to the five ladies and also congrats to Li, Price and Finnegan for being named alternates and still getting to go to the Games. I'm particularly thrilled for Anna Li after all her snubs and Price wasn't even on my radar - must be a great thrill for her, even if she *just* an alt.

Apparently, McKayla stuck her Mustafina!
She had a small hop, personally I would've given her a 9.9 but at that point of the competition I probably would've tried to give her an 11 if I had the power to do so. :D It was basically a replica of her 2nd vault from night one of US Nationals. Made my night, and Gabby oh Gabby. What a star, she had an entire WIEBER section cheering for her right after Jordyn nailed her vault. That's something.
From now on I am going to refrain from any Aly Raisman uber-bashing - seeing how hard she was crying after making the team made me well up with tears and feel guilty for every single time I have ever torn her gymnastics to shreds. She was crying so hard, I think her confidence is going to be something to see in London. (as is her awful for- nope, not gonna do it ;))

For me, the most important thing is that beautiful McKayla Maroney made it onto the Team of Five. I was holding my breath for a while, then she did great (if not perfect) on floor and was her usual marvel on vault. Brava!
Marketing Notes to the NBC Goons: When the heck will the NBC Olympics site change all of those Jordyn Weiber photos and show the top-scoring gal, Gabby Douglas, on its banners? GABBY, not Jordyn, should be raking in the marketing bucks. (Besides, Gabby is much more photogenic - face it!) Get with the program, NBC!!!

Sacramone not even an alternate :( I feel very bad for her, she did even more than anyone ever expected from her. I hope she keeps competing, because she looks better than she has ever looked.
yes. she looked so strong and confident.

They need to keep announcing the team like that for every Olympics. It's so much better than "Here are your top 2, and the rest we're going to bring to camp and whoever doesn't break makes the team. Bye!"
I was watching some of the highlights on nbcolympics.com and I noticed Aly and McKayla screaming at each other while Jordyn was giving her interview.
Also watched Nastia's beam routine again and this time I did actually cry a little when she finished. What an awesome crowd to give her such a great ending to her career.

Do you guys think maybe Sac turned down the alternate position offer thus giving Finnegan the spot?
