The great artists/musicians/dancers WORK on that part of their craft. They don't suddenly gain artistry by having "life experience," whatever that means. If the Shibs are to gain range and artistry, they have work on it. Being able to go on 1-1 dates doesn't help in that respect.

I was often the best artist in my life drawing classes years ago, sensual curves and shading everywhere, and up to that point the only naked men I had seen in person were in those life drawing classes. :P

Yes and Emily Dickinson wrote incredible poetry even though she was a recluse.

But we are talking about ice dancers here. It's a rather different form of performance, don't you think? :P

When you look at Shibutanis both on and off the ice, they seem really shy and awkward and not having "life experience" is definitely harming them majorly IMO.

How are they supposed to show confidence, expression, flirtation, DRAMA, etc. etc. when they lead such sheltered lives?

Since people were talking about who coached who at an early age - when did D/W and V/M end up in Canton? I was under the (apparently false) impression that the former had been with Shpilband from an early age on.

D/W were with Seth Chafetz at DSC for many years before they started with Igor. I think he coached them through to Junior, IIRC.

Now that would open a whole bunch of doors for new speculation if that happened :D

V/M moved to Igor for the 2004/2005 season (their debut senior nationally) from McIntosh and Killing.

This article says, re D/W (http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/archive/results/jgp%20montreal%20CD.htm): "After winning in US national silver medal in 04 at junior level and two bronze medals in the 04 JGP, he suffered an injury which took him our for most of last season. Earlier this year [2005] he and Davis moved to Canton, Michigan to train with Igor Shpilband, alongside Virtue & Moir."

Thanks Conga and Proustable.
Interesting how there seem to be so many coaches able to lay a good foundation yet if you look at the coaches who coach Senior level skaters it's not as much of a variety in names.

Do tell, what exactly do you mean by "life experience"? And what does your definition imply about the kind of breadth of characteristics that influence the level of ice dance performance?

You obviously don't follow either Maia or Alex on Twitter. "Really shy" "awkward" people who lack confidence don't typically carry themselves with maturity, grace and elan at State Department functions at the age of 17. IMO they also don't tend to be as comfortable sharing their passions for food, sports, travel, and comedy, in a coherent way that is enjoyed by thousands of people who follow them on twitter.

Have you read any of their very well written and lively blogs?

Basing my opinion on what IS available from the skaters themselves, not just relying on snide anonymous posts from the usual Shib haters, I guess I just don't come to the same conclusion.

I actually wish brother/sister teams would just embrace the ewww factor.

Alex Shibutani shy and awkward? I love how you can make such a statement by "looking" at them. As someone who's talked to Alex and Maia on quite a few occasions, I have found them to be incredibly well-spoken and far from awkward. Alex is more outspoken than Maia, but they both handle themselves very well with the public.

Because D & W are not related. For the brother and sister team, a romantic skate would have the "ew" factor. Everyone knows they are siblings.
Then don't do a romantic dance. It's not like it's the only option in existence. The Kerrs managed it, the Zars managed it, if you look at P/B, who are certainly not a sibling team, their program concepts have been all over the place but most of them weren't romantic/passionate. There is surely more that the Shibs can do, but someone, either them or their choreographer, needs to think outside the box. Ballroom is as inside the box as possible.

A few non-cutesy Shibutani programs:

2009 Jr Worlds FD to Cinema Paradiso (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1ONEuW7RxE) (they won the FD and the silver medal)
2007-08 FD to Taiko drum music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzIR0VgcWnk&feature=relmfu)
Novice FD 2006-07 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McxhneBBB44&feature=relmfu)

All of these dances are all ballroom type dances in the way the express themselves. Like they are only one dimension skaters.

I think Shakira and Stagniunas are going with him too, not 100% sure though...
Yes, they are, or so says their FB page. And now I have an image of them doing a Shakira program, thanks ever so much. :D
