View Full Version : Which 3 US Men Gymnasts should be Olympic Alternates

It seems consensus right now on the men's team- Horton, Orozco, Leyva, Dalton, and Mikulak. Which 3 should be alternates?

Brooks definitely. Then probably Legendre and I went with Dixon 3rd.

Brooks (AA,SR,PB,HB alternate)
Legendre (VT/FX alternate)
Naddour (PH alternate)

They should those 3 to London as alternates.

Right now, I'd say Brooks#1 (good scores on 5 out of 6 events) and Ruggeri at a shaky#2 (great on 3 events and good at PB). Legendre, Wynn, and Buscaglia are all in the position to potentially contribute good scores on 4 out of the 6 events, with Maestas, Sender, Dixon, and Naddour probably a bit behind that. If Legendre, who is such a wildcard, nails his FX and VT and manages at or close to 15 on Rings and PB, I'd bump him up to 1st alternate or even put him on the team depending on who else is doing what. But awesome on 2 events and bad at the rest might not cut it, its really hard to say. Wynn (rings, then kind of good on PB, VT, and Floor) and Buscaglia (great at FX, VT, and HB, kinda good on PB) are both just so freaking HOT, that if they don't make the team, I vote for them to become the announcing team in London and replace those 3 fools we have now. Sender does well on VT, PB, and RI, but the other 3 events aren't scoring so great right now so I'd put him toward the bottom at the moment. Maestas was up and down at Nationals but only consistently scoring well on Rings and Vault won't do it for him. Naddour was only able to break 15 on pommel and vault at Nationals so right now he's at the bottom of my list of potentials. Dixon is good at Floor, Vault, and High Bar and seemingly not so great at the other 3 so he's at about the same place as Sender. If they all perform about the same as Nationals, I'd be happy with any of Legendre, Ruggeri, Brooks, Wynn, and Buscaglia.

It's hard to think about alternates in terms of filling holes, because you don't know which holes they'll need to fill. So whoever is hitting their 4 good events at Trials will probably fill that 3rd spot assuming those top 2 hold steady.

Brooks, Legendre and Naddour in that order

I would love to see Sender go to the Olys so I voted for him.

06-12-2012, 02:49 PM
I wish Sender would have gone to the Olympics but he just isn't good enough right now to even be an alternate. Why oh why didn't he just leave that bar alone??? Stupid rotten bad luck.

06-12-2012, 05:53 PM
I agree, I think Sender gets a lot of sentimental votes but based on Nationals scores I don't really see how he's better than Wynn or Buscaglia and certainly no comparison to what Ruggeri is putting up. Sometimes I feel like because Ruggeri and Buscaglia almost/never get televised, people pretend they don't exist. But please, let's make sure we get in a 7 minute fluff piece about Leyva and his stupid towel. The gymnastics broadcasts on NBC are the most offensive things I've ever seen. I don't understand why the sport itself can't be the drama rather than super backstory rehash/face-reading nonsense that we have now.
