For my wedding guest dress, I decided to try and find some seperates with a jacked like top, and was very disappointed with the selection in both Nordstrom and Macy's :(

I did like the concept though (thanks cruisin!), and got this dress (http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/alex-evenings-skirt-long-tiered?ID=479337&CategoryID=5449&LinkType=#fn=SPECIAL_OCCASIONS%3DDressy Separates%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D10%26ruleId%3D65%26slot Id%3D10), but in a petite so it falls about mid calf (full length is too long, the knee length version was not flattering).

I also ended up ordering this (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/tadashi-shoji-crisscross-taffeta-blouse/3258541?origin=category&fashionColor=&resultback=1496) online - not quite a jacket, but I hope it lives up to the picture. A lot of the stuff (like this (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/alex-evenings-ruffle-collar-metallic-taffeta-jacket/3286287?origin=category&fashionColor=&resultback=860)) was just too ruffely or didn't look dressy enough up close.
I hope I get it in the mail soon! and that I managed to get the right size (I tried on a dress by the same designer, and that sized seemed to fit my upper half) or that it doesn't make me look to matronly :)

I don't know what to wear for shoes, though - will it be too matchy matchy if I try to find some shoes in a colour similar to the top? Should I just try and find some strappy black heels? I have a pair of amazing green peep toe Peter Kaiser that I probably can't wear (too many colours)...

Dress is pretty. Don't worry about the top you ordered, Tadashi Shoji uses very nice fabrics. I would wear black shoes to match the dress. Shoes should match the thing they are closes to, if you're matching anything. And since the dress is chiffon, I would go strappy with the shoe.

I like the top you ordered very much!
I hope it fits --and that you don't have to wait too long to find out.
Black, strappy shoes sound promising. as well.

I vote for strappy black heels -- they are something so basic that you will get lots of wear from them. I wouldn't add green shoes, unless you were wearing something else that color.

thanks!
yeah I have ben trying to find the perfect pair of strappy heels forever, I thought that those would work best. Always too high heels, too much bling... but most I just check Macys when I pass through. I just checked out the Designer Shoes Warehouse website, they have a lot of selection. I should be able to find something - turns out there is a shop quite close by.

Via Spiga is having a sale, you might find something there: http://www.viaspiga.com/en-US/Content/sale.aspx

My way-too-costly Anyi Liu shoes came today. They fit perfectly. I feel like Cinderella with my SIL getting the role of kindly fairy godmother.

So it is not true I can't wear pumps at all anymore. It is true I can only wear pumps if I'm willing to compromise my retirement savings.

But there's a cluster of discount stores in a very upscale neighborhood right over the line in Maryland. They have a Loehmanns and a Nordstrom Rack (and used to have Filene's, sigh.) Yesterday I saw that the old Borders is becoming a DSW. So if I only shop in that cluster for the next six months I should be OK. :P

I work three blocks up from this wonder you describe. It's not very good for my paycheck. :P

I lived there for a year in the expensive high-rise ghetto. Walking to the Metro every day past the Dior and Manolo and Nanette Lepore etc, I always wondered who is buying that stuff.

Not working stiffs like you and me, that's for sure. ;)

I went by a shoe outlet place for comfortable shoes on sale. I finally found a pair of Think! that I really liked, but then I looked at the price tag. Even after the sale it was :scream:, esp considering all items in the store are nonrefundable.

The shoes look something like this http://www.zappos.com/think-mizzi-3-strap-sandal-88369-multicolor-leather?zfcTest=fw:1

except it has an orange pattern

They look like Birkenstocks.

That's a lot of money for a casual sandal, I wouldn't pay that. Even my Naots cost about $100, and they last for years.

Birks are less too.

But, if you have foot problems and these Think sandals work for you, it may be worth the expense. Jlai, I would go to a store that sells Naots and Birkenstocks and try them on. You may be able to get something equally foot friendly for much less - without a sale price. Actually Zappos carries both: http://www.zappos.com/sandals~x#!/birkenstock-women-sandals/CK_XARC51wFaAsIBwAEB4gIEAQIYCw.zso http://www.zappos.com/sandals~x#!/naot-footwear-women-sandals/CK_XARC51wFaAtgCwAEB4gIEAQIYCw.zso But, go try some on at a retail store - Do you have a Walking Company store near you?

Thanks for the suggestions!

The Think! sandals were on sale for about $100. That is still a lot of $$ to me, considering I can get a pair of Orthaheel (which I also like) for about $40-70 (and Birkenstock and Naot for 60-100). Of course, they're not as cute as these Think! sandals.

I have a couple of weddings to go to this summer and just ordered this dress (http://www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/render-them-speechless-dress). I'm hoping it fits well, otherwise it might end up being given to my sister in law, lol. At $40 I don't mind too much.

I don't know how old you are, Sarah, but if you're in your twenties don't be surprised if you drop weight in the last month and need some last-minute alterations.

I sigh when I remember my wedding at age 28, I went from a 6 to a 4 in the last two weeks, and that was before size inflation. I couldn't get my toe into that gown now.

I'm 27. I guess it's better to lose weight than gain before the wedding? I think my biggest fear is not being able to zip up the dress. But, then again, I'm paranoid and worry.

I need to start investigating shoes. Need something by then end of July when i get the dress hemmed. I'm not overly comfortable with higher heels, but I'm be fine with something 2" or under. Just would prefer something comfortable and not overly expensive. The dress was slightly over my max so I need to cut corners with shoes and still need to get the dress hemmed so...
